Engine Management

So I looked at "New Players Start Here" and links seemed to be dead.  I'm looking for notes on engine management.

I had my first online foray last night.  After fighting my controllers and Track IR for 30 minutes I finally got into the air, only to have my I-16 engine quit after a few minutes.  Normal server, so engine management should have been simplified.  I was only using 60% throttle.  I said screw this and left.  So now it's time to try to learn.  I'm sure the info is out there but it's not as easy to find as I would have hoped.

Thanks.

The biggest problem with full engine management is VR. We just don't have anywhere near enough controller buttons to achieve it even with a CH Products Throttle and using the keyboard is near impossible. This makes VR multiplayer very challenging.

Lensman I have a full CH setup and had no problem binding every single control. I used the left most button on the the throttle unit as shift.

For example water radiator control becomes oil radiator when shift is pressed. It would be better to have slider control for every thing but buttons work fine as long and you memorize where the same control is in the cockpit.

If it helps I can take a picture of the sheet I use to write down my bindings. I still have a good number of buttons unbound.

Hi Pat.

When you look at the map briefing, default key "O", while you are in whatever plane you are flying, you will see the "specifications" tab. This has a ton of useful information about the planes you fly, I usually just scroll down until I see the Nominal / boost / and emergency settings and time limits. Hope this helps.

I'm using the saitek X55 with peddles. This is fine for everything in game at the moment, though some switches are mapped for a different function depending on the plane. For example, so far planes with a parking brake, don't at the moment have bomb bay doors, so I use the same switch for both. Planes have a water radiator or a cowling, so I use the same axis for both, unless its a step radiator like on the spit or the bf 110 where I use a hat switch.

I use a Virpil stick, Warthog Throttle, and CH Throttle Quadrant - seems to provide enough for me to handle my engine management in VR.

Did you have the inlet shutter and oil cooler open?

I suspect this is the issue, as an I-16 at 60% throttle should run till the fuel tank is empty.

As long as RPM is 93%, pretty sure 100% RPM will kill it eventually.

But he was on normal, so RPM and temp management shouldn't matter, right? Idk, I never fly normal but thought that's how it worked

I did not and that might have killed it.  I thought on anormal server CEM was not an issue, but I could be wrong.

When flying on my own I use a custom setup.  CEM is enabled, but I use external views, icons and maps.  I eventually want to get rid of icons but the truth is that i can't see anything at the moment.

Anywhow - back to to CEM - i actually prefer it because you don't wonder what you do or do not have to do.  You already know the answer: everything.

@Pat, 60% throttle at 100% RPM is boosted mode in the I-16 and is likely to kill your engine in 5 minutes

Patrick - good man for taking up the I-16.

We are of similar mind.

This is off topic, but if you are an icon user like me, you should try my mod:  https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30556-3dmigoto-mod-vr/ , just to have label and icon masked by cockpit & plane frame. I hate seeing icons through opaque parts.

It will work even if you do not use 3dvision or VR, and if you do not want the reduced sight you can toggle it off or set it off by default.

If you want to try, just install the IL2Bos part and maybe do this thing if you had trouble to lauch il2 after mod install : https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30556-3dmigoto-mod-vr/page-2?do=findComment&comment=541205

Thanks lefuneste, it's exactly what I looked for! Many thanks, really.

Could you please customize icons, or is it outside the scope of your mod?

Edit: I use a flat screen with TIR and I installed your mod as a JSGME option (only the non-VR part).

As =11=herne said, all the engine management info you need can be found under the "specifications" tab when you bring up your map in-game.

The specifications for each aircraft can also be found here: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/25993-aircrafts-flight-and-technical-specifications-and-operation/

Lots of useless information, all you need to do is scroll down to "Engine modes". For the I-16 it looks like what you see at the end of this message.

According to the specifications of the I-16, you can operate the I-16 continuously without blowing the engine as long as you keep the RPM <2200 and the manifold pressure <915 mm Hg.

Other than that, just keep your radiators open and then start adjusting them when you feel more comfortable flying. Check oil and water temps and adjust rads as necessary.

Engine modes:
Nominal (unlimited time): 2200 RPM, 915 mm Hg
Boosted power (up to 5 minutes): 2300 RPM, 1065 mm Hg

The server settings on NORMAL are still up to the admin.  I know on Coconut's normal you still have to manage the engine, you just have map markers and icons over aircraft.

As stated above set the RPM to 93% and adjust the cowl and oil settings and it should run all day.

all the information is on the planes spec page .
eveything needed to fly the plane is there and accesible online or offline on the map screen.
So the engine management is very basic.

I could made some modification, but this is off topic, I will start a new thread on icon mod.
