Easy Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS Profile for IL-2

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hey Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog owners,

I finally found some time yesterday to create my own KeyMapping for IL-2 on the Warthog HOTAS.

I tried to keep it pretty simple, easy to remember and color coded it. Thought I might share it, maybe someone can use it. Enjoy!

Best

Boomer

P.s. Feedback is of course appreciated! :-)

OK that you have "tons of buttons" at hand, but (IMO) a dedicate a button for rockets and anther bombs is a waste, the button that fire rockets can drop bomb under "pinky" modifier - the button in your profile assigned for "tail wheel"  - what add a safety measure against accidental bomb drop.

But that setup is convenient if you play with unlimited ammo. ;)

"Siren and "air brakes" can be assigned in the same button, as they are interrelated functions.

An Bf 109 "experten" will prefer a setup that allow fire MG and Cannons individually, for fire both just press the buttons simultaneous, instead that trigger setup that don't allow use only cannons.

Hey Sokol1,

great feedback and good tips. I‘ll put those into version 2.0!

Thx

Changed a little bit of the layout to include Teamspeak and separate MGs and Cannons. Thx to Sokol1 for his tips.

Hey Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog owners

Thanks Grey Ghost, as I'm waiting on a new throttle I've never got round to  completely mapping my HOTAS,

getting by with just the bare essentials assigned.

You've inspired me to map a few more now, and best of all, you've reminded me of the existence of button 5,

which I had somehow completely overlooked!

I'll now shift rockets from button 2 to 5, freeing up 2 for cannon, which I haven't had a separate button for.

(I haven't progressed to bombing yet)

Hi, glad I could help. Took some time and feedback to figure out the best setup at least for me. But I am still happy with this config.

Enjoy the flying!

Where can I find this config file? Or do you mean the picture above?

The commands in the lower left corner, where are they attached to? Which buttons I mean?

Thanks

No, the controls at left, in the blue background, are for enable/disable "aids/cheats" in engine management, since is used once don't need waste joystick buttons with then.

And in light red background is gunner turret access/controls, no reason, neither is practical use joystick there, turret is done to be controlled with mouse.

Exactly ..... these boxes just serve as a quick reference in case I would need them, so I do t have to look up the commands in the middle of the action ...

There is no config file to keep it easy and compatible with future updates of IL-2. And i did not use the Thrustmaster TARGET Software because at least for me it is not very user friendly and easy to understand.

I hear you! Join the club.

It's straightforward enough mapping functions in the game settings, but to get the best out of a HOTAS it's really necessary

to map (a) modifier button(s) to allow switches/buttons to have more than one function assigned.

IL2 only recognizes 64 buttons, so to map more than that you need to use applications to set up virtual controllers. My new throttle

will support up to 112 buttons and custom functions, so it should be possible to forget about the keyboard after clicking 'Start'.

Like Grey Ghost, I never tried out TARGET, after reading bad reviews.

I've looked at instructions for using JoyToKey and Joystick Gremlin, which also utilises vJoy, and at first glance it all seems a bit

daunting to me.

I'll go with J G/ vJ, but I'm putting it off till I get the new throttle to provide inspiration.

I set up my TM warthog with Target using information from here:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=226594

i had to adjust something for the flaps position up / center / down but i don‘t remember what exactly. But it works fine for me.

This makes it possible to have an action bound to a switch in „OFF“ state. So as example Gear up in the state „on“ puts my gear up and in the state „Off“ puts the gear down.

Thanks for the input guys im just going to set up the basics for now until i get the hang of things, and jaygee stop scaring me with the 64 and 112 buttons Lol i wouldnt remember what most of them were for anyhow, but guys this will be my third rig in such a short time i do hope the warthog suits me because i broke the bank this time, the x52 throttle is ok but i just cant for the love of me get even close to comfortable with the stick its bloody awful, with having to keep changing throttle and stick plus i started using trackhat and rudder pedals ( which i have now mastered ) i just felt like i was starting from scratch each time and starting to lose heart with it all not really getting any chillout time flying you know ? seriously guys the warthog with all the buttons and switches did look rather daunting to me too but after looking at the config of Grey_Ghost i felt like my worries were over , and thanks SteelFalcon i will keep this all for future reference VERY MUCH APPRECIATED guys THANKS A LOT.:good:

I have just downloaded it SteelFalcon for the not so distant future THANKS again mate.  ?

I switched to the warthog 3 months ago from a T16000 and i would never switch back. Throttle and stick movement is SO smooth. And i like that the stick is kind of „heavy“.

all in all a more natural and not „toy-ish“ feeling.

mixture

engine 1 and 3 combined

@Grey_Ghost Since you are using Thrustmaster you might now if it is possible to generate layout sheet from TARGET Script, so I could also post my configuration?

@jozeff Unless you want to stay on the ground you will probably need engine start and gear up/down ; )

PS. I don't think it's good idea to offtop about the JU52 setup here.

Thanks a lot guys! A target script or layout would be very welcome! I fly in VR exclusively so all the camera movement assignments are not necessary for me.

I'm really, really struggling with my controller setup. I used joy2key and joystick gremlin also but somehow it just doesn't do exactly what I want in il2.

I decided to stick to TARGET because I pretty much got the hang of that after many hours trying stuff :(

it just seems impossible to bind a shift or Ctrl key exclusively in TARGET so I can use the hat switch on my joystick for pitch, radiator and inlet flaps.

thanks for your input!!

@jozeff

I already posted you the script, which utilizes usage of radiators and inlet/outlet flaps on HAT switch in different topic. You can easily read and understand everything in the script on your own as the Thrustmaster provides manual for Target script, also if you have questions you can send me private messages, or at least try to stick to on one thread instead of spamming the same questions in multiple places. I would also recommend using quote/react, so other people will see notification about your questions, which will prevent you from waiting longer periods of time for an answer.

They way Bo'X handle modifier+key sent by external program is the issue, example LCtrl+F.

Because game see: F, LCtrl+F. This make JoyToKey unusable - unless you redo several assignment of default keymaping.

A curious thing I notice is that in certain updates of the game JoyToKey work OK, but then with the next update don't work OK anymore.

Joystick Gremlin is OK, you just need add a "pause" between LCtrl and F. See how there:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/35438-svmapper-and-diy-panel-cannot-distinguish-between-lshift-rshift-and-so-on/?do=findComment&comment=599668

Same with TARGET, with this software is matter of use "HOLD" command for LCtrl.
