General question about the IL2 series

Thank you very much for the overwhelming amount of responses, guys! I think I got most of my questions answered. Now, do I understand correctly, that I can technically have every aircraft of the series as an AI enemy if I just buy one "version" of the series? I spent many hours in IL2 1946, which at its time was excellent, and this sim had a pretty extensive mission builder. Does the new series have one as well, where I could, for instance, pick the P-51D and then chose any aircraft of the series as AI enemies?

Regarding the multiplayer: I think I get the general idea of how it works with the severs. Is there also a way to create an own server with one's own preset?

Other than that this was all I wanted to know thus far, so thanks again for all the answers!

Well, I am really planning on sticking to the P-51 in the beginning, since I know this particular aircraft very well by now (systems, operation, limitations and its history) - again, I have hundreds of hours in the A2A Simulations P-51D for FSX/P3D by now and am missing it already since it wasn't updated to the new 64bit version yet. This is an aircraft I will feel "right at home" in when I jump into IL2 again. However this might change and I might "expand my hotizon" so to speak and try out different aircraft and expansions - the later model Spitfires are also one of my favorites.

But since the P-51D was mainly used in the western front and western europe during WWII, I don't think I'd fancy to fly it in the BOS, BOK or BOM maps, against those particular aircraft, which didn't see combat against P-51's in the war. Having said that, after reading that BoBP will come out in spring 2018 at the soonest, skimming through the product page and list of aircraft I might actually get BOM to get started with the P-40 and Mig-3 and get a feel for the sim. :)

So far as I know you can fly against any AI plane, yes. The new series has its own Quick Mission Builder. Its not quite as flexible as the old one yet but its still pretty good for loading up a good dogfight and its okish at setting up some ground targets to attack if that's your thing.

I'm a fly everything and get my moneys worth kind of person and I really do want to fly everything. I think that makes me a better pilot too.

In Bodenplatte I'm getting my two all-time favourites in the Spitfire IX and Tempest V so you can bet that I'll be flying the heck out of those. I'm really really excited by what we're getting with those two, but I've also found great joy in aircraft I hadn't considered over the years. Battle of Moscow's I-16 wasn't at all on my list of aircraft to fly and even less on one I ended up liking but I ended up flying that plane a lot and really enjoying it. The Bf110E-2 and G-2 have ended up being my most flown Axis aircraft in online battles for its fighter-bomber/strike capabilities so that's been a little unexpected for me as well.

By all means you should be super excited to fly your favourites but IL-2 is a great sim for giving you some other options that you may unexpectedly enjoy. Something also worth noting is that we don't know what the release schedule will be for new aircraft in IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte. Jason said the Spitfire IX and one of the Bf109s would probably be first - they are the easiest for the team to modify from previous types they have already created. After that the new types will trickle in one at a time as the team finishes them. They rarely hold anything back but it does take time to build these things.

$6000? For a video game?

Look this is salty even on sale, like I said above

If someone complain about the price from this game that is costy then he should look around more how other games cost where you receive much more less for your money.......................

Shouldn't really judge how others use their time should we.

I'm well over 1500 hours and for the last year I've actually had limited time.

The vast amount of hours you can build up is a key indicator of how good the series is. I have little time for any other games /sims.

It is not a judgement, it is a statement of fact hat the vast majority of people   work 8-10 hours per day and  cannot ever hope to have time to play  a game 3 hours per day  after that.

The  value of a game can be measured only on less extreme cases. If you are one that somehow manages to  play 3 hours per day  all days for 3 years, you are so loving of that genre that   you are beyond the extreme of the  curve of average users and should NOT be considered as a parameter of NORMAL value :P There is probably only a few hundred people in world with time AND money AND love to do that.

Not sure anyone is complaining about the price, or disputing BoX's value for money; to think something is "costly" depends largely on one's income and any expenses they have. ☺

...

This all comes from one person saying how much value they get from il2, which is a good thing, yet they get accused of having 'no life'.

If someone entertains themselves with il2 for so long, good on them, [snip] ...

I wish my wife saw things this way!

Not complaining; simply taking note of the reality of what it costs.

That something is worth the price does not mean it is not expensive in the first place. Likewise, that something is expensive does not mean it is not worth the price. ;)
