I just spent over an hour flying over the southern range of the Kuban map in VR and it was something to experience..

The snow capped mountains over 2+ Kilometers high, stone cliff faces ,deep tree lined valleys with rivers and then returning back to land at the concrete runway at Adler.   Adler is on the coast and I had the wind set at max and white caps on the water before going inland was most impressive.

The editorial staff of IL2 Sturmovik surely deserve a lot of praise for their product.   Outstanding!!!!

The immersion factor with the Oculus Rift CV1 is so great I find it hard to comprehend the negative comments about it.

If anyone is on the fence about VR and can take this flight, you will never hesitate.

Indeed - I spent way more time just flying around the Kuban map sightseeing right after I got my Rift than I did flying actual missions.  I'm now well into a PWCG campaign approaching Moscow, and those missions are a blast in VR too, but I still find myself doing QMB free-flights around the Kuban map from time to time just for the sheer beauty of it.

:good:

It is awesome ain't it !

I got my Rift on Jan 15th, no telling how many hours I have logged in with this thing since getting it. It actually increased my flight simming dramatically.

I have been flying BoS in VR since they released their implementation and it has been a fantastic ride so far. That wow factor is still with me each time I get into the cockpit.

I am actually considering to buy a high end rig and OR just for the flight expirience it gave me when I tried it out. I read up on people flying MI 8 in DCS who said it was incredeable, while that expirience actually dissapointed me. I guess a weekend test do not allow for tweaking the graphc settings and will not give you the true expirience.

I was sure I would get motion sick, trying it, but that did not happened. I am glad people enjoy it, it actually give me hope

Can't wait for VR! Think I'm going to hold off until next gen though, but this is temping...but then I'd have to go out and build a new PC.

I knew dburne would post here ;)

i cant play without vr now.

Its not perfect but its immersive.

Im lucky enough to have a 3 monitor setup with track ir.

Wont play il2 that way now.

Vr all the way.

I`m exactly the same. My (diy) TiR hasn`t been used since i got a cheap used DK2, which then led me onto the CV1. I`d play the Settlers 2 with it if i could!

Just starting to try out IL-2 BoX with a CV1 and wondering what settings work best.  Running an i7-7700k, 1080ti, 1tb SSD so horsepower should be fine.  With most setting on NORMAL getting a solid 90fps in dogfight missions (except when looking at Stalingrad or with HUD on, of course), but after towards end of mission seem to get some "doubling" of aircraft models - but still with 90 fps.

Any suggestions on best setting are welcome!

And as an old aviator with 2k hours in F-4s and 3k hours in gliders and RL acro pilot, all I can say is that IL-2 in VR is pretty damn close to the real thing - without the sweaty g's!

I have the same rig as you show and with 32GB.

Set Graphics on ULTRA and everything else max and enjoy the eye candy and battles.

This is a very subjective matter. We have been doing some testing with our VR performance test to measure how every hardware , software or settings were affecting performance. You can read the whole long thread but the summary is in the first post:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/29322-measuring-rig-performance-common-baseline/

With your current rig I would follow this steps:

1.- Determine how much overclocking you can afford. OC will give you a nice boost on fps. I you don´t know OC don´t worry, in just 3-4 hours you can learn to do a moderate OC. There are many people here with 7700K overclocked. This is what I did for my 4790K but the procedure is the same:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/29881-overclocking-4790k-better-bos-performance

2.- Be sure you RAM speed is above 2600Mhz. We saw that RAM speed is also a determining factor for IL-2 in VR.

3.- Determine how much SuperSampling your GPU can afford. SS is the number one parameter to touch to increase graphic quality. You can increase it in SteamVR until you see a performance hit. For you 1080Ti card you can go well from 2.3 to 3.0. More info at:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30771-how-much-ss-desirable-image-quality-samples/

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/31307-how-ss-decreases-your-fps-testing-results/

4.- Decide if you want to use some AA. Here some people use AAx0, other AAx2 and other AAx4. They have not a performance impact in VR (at least in my rig):

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/32186-identification-vr-supersampling-and-aa-influence-sample-imag/

5.- Decide if you want to use ASW or not. If the glitches around the propeller annoy you they switch it off:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/31642-experimentingunderstanding-asw-onoff/

6.- Determine the graphic preset you want to use (LOW, BALANCED, HIGH, ULTRA). They affect to the range of the render bubble and some minor details of objects polygons and shadows. In your case the decision would be between HIGH and ULTRA. With HIGH you will be most of the time at 90fps, but with ULTRA you might go below 90 frequently. Being at 70-80 fps is not bad at all, but this doulbing planes effect you mention is because you are below 90fps (dropped frames). This effect disappear if you run ASW  but then you have the propeller glitches.

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30840-graphic-settings/?p=511971

7.- For all the other graphics settings is then a very subjective matter. You will see that some people with a 7700K and a 1080Ti have been doing some tests with different options and they have reported them in the VR performance thread. I have seen that mirrors and shadows have an impact in fps. There is also another thread that give some tips and recommend settings to new users:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30119-tips-new-rift-owners/

8.- Don´t forget to enter in the VR club:

What a privilege being a RL fighter pilot. I also wanted to be a fighter pilot but my miopy obliged me to study something else.

This words said by a fighter pilot say a lot about IL-2 VR!

Did you flight sim before or it has been the VR what brought you to IL-2?

Welcome aboard!

Yes IL-2 in VR is truly an incredible experience. I got my Rift back in January, and have been having a blast with it ever since. Have only flown BoS in VR since it was implemented, and am still blown away by it every time I get into the cockpit.

I will only add to Chiliwili's excellent advice.

As he mentioned, yes with your rig you should easily be able to run on High or Ultra settings. Main thing as you realize is to keep the HUD off unless really needed. I have mine assigned to a button on my throttle where I can easily toggle it on and off. I also have VR Zoom and VR re-center view assigned to buttons as well.

Also be sure and set " prefer maximum performance" in the Nvidia Control Panel ( you do not want optimum selected here).

Not much else you can select in Nvidia control panel for graphics in VR, use the in game settings for the rest.

As far as super sampling, I myself prefer to use the Oculus software since I do have a Rift. Probably not any big difference using it versus the Steam settings, except with the values set. Oculus software setting say 1.5 for SS would equate to like 2.25 in Steam VR. ( 1.5x1.5).

I use the Oculus Tray Tool to set a profile for BoS, to set both SS and ASW setting ( off in my case). I also use it to switch my audio and mic to Rift when I put the headset on and Oculus Home starts, and then when I close Home to switch it back to my default speakers.

The Oculus Tray Tool is a very handy third part app that makes it easy to access some of the Oculus features.

It can be had here:

https://forums.oculusvr.com/community/discussion/47247/oculus-traytool-supersampling-profiles-hmd-disconnect-fixes-hopefully/p1

Regarding ASW and what it does, info can be found here:

https://developer.oculus.com/blog/asynchronous-spacewarp/

Personally I find I prefer to run a profile for BoS with ASW set to off. Running with it on, I get the prop anomalies along with double vision on the planes as they fly by. With it off I do not get that, and still I get a very smooth performance.

Just get in there and make some graphic adjustments , use the in game fps counter ( bkspc) and fly and see where it takes you. Once you get satisfied, turn that fps counter off and have fun!

Thanks for all the great responses - i'll be investigating them time permitting (I actually have to go on a couple of work-related trips, working on F-15E sims - so my own sim work will unfortunately be on hold for a bit.

Some specific answers: I'm running 32g of 3200 ram, and plan on a mild OC (my DIY system is stuffed full of Noctua coolers and fans for that reason). Have Oculus Tray Tool but have not yet tried turning off ASW, that will be next. Found out quickly about the HUD hit on FPS; have it mapped on my stick and it is like an FPS turbo switch!

I've got both DCS and IL-2 and like both but for different reasons - I work on state of the art fighter sims everyday so am less interested in modern systems and more in WW-2 fighters (and early jets & helos).  Been flying since before I could drive (PPL in highschool) and was an F-4 WSO  - and as USAF F-4s had sticks in the pit I had to teach myself how to fly the Rhino; spent a lot of time sandbagging in the F-4 simulator learning the pilot's cockpit (also essential when I was an instructor WSO - trying to keep new Lt Pilots from killing the both of us!). Then when I retired from AF, went to work for several big US simulator companies, working on mainly F-15 sims as a test engineer, which basically means I would fly the sim and find out all the things that didn't work right, then help the software engineers fix them.  And on weekends I'm either flying my old LS6 glider crosscountry or towing gliders in a 250hp Pawnee - a big single seat taildragger the size of a Bf-109 that flies like agricultural device that it really is...

Started PC simming back on an Amiga 1000 (512k of RAM, no HD) using F-16 Falcon, then Tornado on a 486 PC (loved the targeting pod!), then IL-2 1946 on an OK notebook. Never really serious about them (never got online) but I really liked all the WW2 content in IL-2 and am excited where IL-2 BoX is heading.

So yeah, i'm a bit of an airplane "enthusiast"!

Cheers,

Well... not unfortunate if you IL-2 sim work has to wait for your F-15 sim work!! Wow! what a dream to work as well with those top sims! You really need to be conscious about how lucky are you.

Having flown all variety of planes from gliders to fighters you arrive now to the VR age of flight sim, it is like a cheery on the top of a big cake.

VR is really what all of us dreamed when starting flight sim. Very exciting years ahead!

PD: If you miss some of G´s in IL-2 VR, take a look of this motion platforms:
