Developer Diary, Part 46

I like the game so far!

I hope developers will work a lot on ground AI quality also

Keep driving with lights on after being under attack in the night is not very smart!

Also having the columns breaking and truks steering off the street would be a nice touch!

Some of the ambient sounds are very well done. I put my view by the flags on the field. I couldn't hear the flags ripple in the wind, but the wind sound effect is very good. It really sounds like a cold winter wind blowing across an open field. The crackling sound of the burning trucks is great too. I only wish the destroyed objects didn't disappear so quickly.

As a standard-bearer founder, I offer my most profound and heartfelt thanks to the Devs for finally throwing the doors open to us.

I haven't flown yet. On Dec 20th I attempted to log in but was constantly told there was an update available. I'd go back for the update and be told update was successfully completed. This loop continued until I disconnected in complete exasperation and crawled miserably away. Then I thought maybe I'd miscalculated Moscow time. Turns out I was wrong; even though that realization came too late to help me, as currently there's a power outage over here that's lasted for hours already. It's the third world, you see.

So, I'm back to another anxious wait, desperately hoping power will be restored before the first access is over...oh, and that my log-on trouble was only a fluke that won't repeat itself. As for you guys who're painting the Stalingrad skies red, I'm happy for y'all while turning a deeper shade of green all the same.

Wow guys that La-5 looks amazing! I cannot wait to get my hands all over her.

FM is good for a game, but not good for a simulation. I'll reconsider that statement when you show me a real world LaGG-3 S29 maintaining control at an angle of attack of 45°.

Out of interest JtD, how did you measure/judge an angle of attack of 45°? Angle of attack is relative to the airflow around the wing and the wing should stall at some where (very roughly)around 15°. Did you mean you were in a controlled sustained climb with the attitude of the aircraft of 45°?

If your updater doesn't work there is an alternative Laucher available. Look back through Zak's posts to find it.

At the moment with no icons or padlock it is WAY easier to find targets in the dark. Something's wrong with that picture.

Proof ?   You are the only one with this assertion. (pitch is not AoA)

I think there is a bug with the LaGG and the bombs.

As I was slowly taxiing in the snow I dropped my bombs just to see how my bird explodes.

Nothing happened at all though. Big explosions but no scratch on my plane :)

The Ive noticed that the trucks also have a DM? I dropped my bombs in the middle of two vehicles, one exploded and the other maintained his way but black smoke came out of it as it drove on down the road. Looked cool!

But tbh I hate that the trucks just dont care about the threat from the sky, its such an immersion killer. Id like to see them drive away like crazy or trying to hide their cars between houses or so. Its way to easy to destroy a whole column with just your cannon.

Like lemmings they are. Hopefully this subject is to change later on.

Sputnik, I think these targets are just placeholders and not using anything but a simple AI routine aka following waypoints.

Could a bug, yes. What is not a bug but a thing that has not been implemented yet is explosion blast. So, the plane can be damaged by fragments but the blast, the wave does not influence it at all now.

Well I've also dropped them and had my plane blown to bits and pilot killed a few times so generally it works.

Would be nice if the latest changes/addition would be documented a bit better to avoid "useless" bug reports. Like the blast missing and people see "bugs" because of that even there is none. In simplest form could be like: Bombs and rockets added. Shrapnel damage active, blast damage not active. Just my .02€..

Hi guys,

After seeing the videos and screenshots from others over the last few weeks, I've been impressed.

Now I've had four hours last night, and three hours this morning flying it,  I'm totally blown away.

I have an outdated system [Athlon 2 635 + Radeon 5770], but it runs and looks great on it.

The feeling of flight is top notch, it's hard to believe that the sim is only at 36%.

Great job 777/IC, thank you. :salute:

Maybe i missed that but the 6th session will feature an update as well or it will be just for the Xmas pause with the actual setup ?

Good question.  December 25th - 26th will be normal working days in Orthodox Russia?  If so then perhaps we'll get another update to fiddle with over the holidays.

Really enjoying these weekly access sessions where we get a dev and game update. .

I feel as if the effects haven't gotten the same amount of attention as the planes.

I noticed the same thing.

The effects look awesome in a screenshot but when seen in a video I get another impression.

Here is a similar video to yours.

Yeah. Flight Sims always seem to have trouble with effects.

I remember your effect mods at SAS1946.

Wasn't your work also included in one of the TD patches?

Yes, I believe so. I had to leave early though, so I'm not sure what parts were used. Hats off to any effects guys, that shit is hard.

I would like to see them increase their speed when under attack also. Maybe they could also veer their direction especially when going down a straight road or better the drivers bail and run for cover as in the pre-release video. I have noticed sometimes the second or third truck in a column won't follow the exact same turn. It slides a little to the outside of the curve. I liked that. I didn't like him driving through a roadside fence without damaging it. Maybe that will change.

And I know this is a ways down the road, but when trains arrive (I assume there will be) I would love to see them high ball down the tracks when under air attack. Laying heavy smoke would be a very cool effect.

Excuse me, but I just wanted to ask why I dont have the option to buy the standard edition on the website now that it has been released for early access?

The founders pre-order period ended more than a month ago. It is no longer possible to buy those versions. There is an early access premium version now, but if you just want the standard I think you will have to wait until the game is officially released.

Afaik it's "Sturmovik" Foobar, the Russians adopted the German word "Sturm" into their vocabulary around the time of Peter the Great, he was a big fan of the Prussians and their military iirc :)

Schturmowik is the correct transcription from russian to german :) and you are right.

so it'll not be available for purchase anymore till a later date? hmm.......

well, guess I am sticking to CloD for a lil while longer.

Or maybe I'll just have to fork out the extra cash.

Yes, this is epic, i must say, i'm really enjoying this WW2 flight simulation :)

One bug found while playing this Alpha, (not complaining just trying to help out):

Escape key did not work on one one occasion, (while in game play). Alt Tab, then closing and restarting the game was needed. No problems since.

Didn't have much luck with the rockets though.

Also, love the KV-1 :)

What's wrong with it exactly in your view?

They looks superior to anything else out there imo.

Yes, I think they look pretty awesome. No need for more in a flight sim, that would be a useless resource killer. My 2 cents...

I was surprised to see a KV-1 in there, maybe I wasn't paying attention but it certainly looks a beast even from hundreds of metres above it...

But... isn't it a KV-1s with the rounded turret edges...?

Yeah!  I think weapon effects are pretty damn good.  Ground strafing especially really captures the mayhem!

Hi, iLOVEwindmills. It appears to me that some layers of the effects disappear abruptly during the animation, giving them a hitchy look. And the smoke from destroyed vehicles rises mechanically into a rather straight smoke and fire column. Also, the roundish texture outline in the dark smoke is very noticeable against the white background which gives the effect a blotchy look. And if you notice at :37 in Uufflakke's video the entire smoke column disappears when the camera is looking away then begins to regenerate when the camera's moved back(this unrealistic behavior is in ROF today). Compared to other sims, yes, they are fine, but compared to the stuff in other games these days...

The effects from the explosions look amazing.  Also the sounds, the sounds of the planes flying the way the BF109 F4 pulls to the left on take off, .etc, etc... Impressive  :salute:

I could not believe my luck. Managed to destroy all 4 Russian tanks. It was a total tin a_s_ effort!

And yet frostbite is unable to do a map the size of BoS' current map let alone the final full map of stalingrad. And the smoke is affected by actual wind, not some gimmicky effect. So when wind is present it will be blown about according to actual wind speed and direction.

Not 100% correct.

Frostbite IS able to handle a BoS sized map (even bigger than that) but would require way too much power for current gen machines.

Smoke is affected by wind in Frostbite 3 the same way is in any other game/sim. It was just a pre-calculated effect in previous engines (Frostbite / Frostbite 2).

That said, back on flight sim's effects, i think they are great the way they are now.

Making them better would eventually be an useless FPS hit.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be ugly. I just like talking about effects.

I would love to see that kind of surface damage in flight sims one day! And what about that smoke lighting and melting snow!

Merry Christmas!
