I've been trying to figure that out. The standard USN flare gun in WWII was the Mk 5, but I've yet to determine if this was carried by pilots:

I was quiet surprised that the USA did lag so far behind in development of flare guns and amunition at the begining of WW2. Germany and Britain had so many diffrent flare guns and ammunition types for them that one is barely able to know half of them.
