Navigating in Multiplayer......

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

I have a quick question on navigation while playing on a multiplayer server...  is there a map you can refer to while in flight to get to where

the action is?....   sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.  I see the starting map where you choose your starting airfield.. getting in the air is no problem,  I just

cant find the reference points to where the fighting is....I usually just fly around and see nuthin.

thank you in advance....

Mike

O is the default button that brings up the map. On the server tactical air war, there is no icon that represents you on the map to increase realism.

Before takeoff it is usually a good idea to plan a route that you want to take. Assuming from your post that you are flying as a fighter and hence looking for enemy contact, a good tactic is to look at where the opposition's bases are, where they are likely to attack and with what (HQs and ammo dumps usually attract the heavier aircraft while convoys, artillery and tanks will attract ground attack aircraft) and then put yourself in the head of the enemy pilot and try to work out how he will get from his base to the target and back again, When doing this bear in mind that while he MAY choose to fly a straight line between the two points, he is more likely to choose a route that is either easier to navigate along or that gives him a tactical advantage when approaching or leaving his target zone.

Also bear in mind that while you are looking for the enemy in this way, their fighters will be looking for you.

Another option of course is to get on TS or similar and form a hunting party with other pilots or maybe escort some bombers/attack aircraft.

On the route panning side, you can use il2missionplanner on a second monitor, computer, or tablet, created by yours truly. For Android devices there's awesome the IL-2 Tactical Map app, created by MAGNUM_PT.

Also have to second Silk's suggestion about getting on teamspeak. Working with a team on TAW or other servers takes this game from good to great.

Hard to give a good answer without a few questions first.

Do you know how to use the in game brief screen as a map? The default keybind should be 'o'.

If you do know how to view the map, fly to the nearest objective on the map marked by circle icons. The mission brief popout also gives more details on targets, usually

If you do know all of this, is your question related to how to navigate somewhere without 'GPS'? (you can't see your plane on the map)

Also you can download a E6-B calculator and it works perfectly for wind corrections on long flights

If you have an IPad open you can use the links Retnek mentioned above with the E6-B and once you figure things out you can end up in the right spot after two or three turns in winds up to and including (and more higher to be sure) 13-16MPS

Google Flight Computer Sim app

Very good and makes for enjoyable cross country exercises when you learn it and end up on target ((now, just to stop those guys from shooting you down and destroying your new found high)

Edit- oh that Mission Planner looks swell as well

Don't think too much into navigation.

It's quite simple. Rivers, roads, towns and timber.

Identifying one or all four of those things give you your whereabouts. Always good to, at the very least, plan landmarks to guide your route to target/area and your return trip.

Yep.

Haven't flown online since well before Moscow was released, but I learned to ingress/egress offline by recognizing the shapes of certain forested areas in relation to towns, rivers etc.

I learned how to navigate from several Russian bases over to the other side and back like this in short order.

In a pinch there's the beacons if you're flying an aircraft equipped to use them.
