pilotpierre Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I updated to 1060 6g graphics card and 16g RAM last week and was most impressed with the difference in game play. (Previous was a 580 1.5g card and 8g RAM). The guy who installed it suggested changing the DVI cable with a HDMI cable. Despite all that I have read on google and the forums about it would not make a difference to game play, the guy said he would give me one to try. He said if I didnt think it made a difference I could take it back. He also said it has to be better as the DVI runs a combination of analog and digital whereas the HDMI is pure digital. I picked one up this morning, plugged it in and gave it a whirl. The game and TIR both seem to run smoother and the annoying stutter when the a/c revolve in the hangar on start up has also disappeared. Placebo or not, I aint taking it back.
HippyDruid Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Nice, good to hear the upgrade was worth it. After reading your post I decided to swap over from HDMI to DVI to see if it would make a difference for the stuttering that occurs due to the MSFFB2/TrackIR and FFB on in IL-2. https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/26746-trackir-and-ffb-working-together-cause-terrible-stuttering/ Unfortunately it made bugger all difference but it was worth a try. Cheers.
Finkeren Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 The change in cable most likely meant nothing. The HDMI socket on my screen broke down a year ago, so I switched to DVI, and there was no difference. On the other hand, updating my graphics card five months ago meant a huge performance boost.
HippyDruid Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Yeh HDMI 1.4 and DVI are essentially the same, I hadn't seen anyone mention their connections in the other thread so I thought it was worth a bash. I don't have any issues getting 100+ FPS since the 2.006 update, it's just the combination of the above seems to cause some stuttering issues with FFB enabled. It's odd behaviour, I'm just hoping the devs can have a look at a potential fix. Sorry for dragging your thread off topic PP.
pilotpierre Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 Actually I made a (not on purpose) false statement in the OP, it didnt stop the rotating a/c stuttering on game start up, just the one after a mission is finished, ergo may have been a placebo effect afterall.

It is normal on startup, the game will load all kinds of things and has little cycles left for rendering.
dburne Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Upgrading from a 580 to a 1060, especially with the game now using DX11, I am sure made a huge difference.
69th_chuter Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I experienced a single like 1/8th second hitch at a very specific point while running the Unigen Valley Benchmark with a GTX1080 in UHD with an HDMI 2.0 cable. I could set my watch by it. Switching to Displayport eliminated it. Other than that one bizarre case I've never noticed any differences between cables.
Sgt_Joch Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) I had an issue some times back (now solved) which led me to this article: https://pcmonitors.info/articles/correcting-hdmi-colour-on-nvidia-and-amd-gpus/ which delves into pixel formats and the impact of using DVI or HDMI cables. However, after much testing back and forth, on both a monitor and HDTV, I saw no noticeable difference and went back to a HDMI cable. Edited January 16, 2017 by Sgt_Joch
Elem Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Surely Display Port is the best option over the other 2?
