Server and Client on same PC?

Hey guys-

 

In the past I was under the impression that you could not run a DServer on the same PC as you play the game. First, is that true?

 

And second, does anyone know what in particular prevents it? Is it an issue of using the same game resources? The same ports? Something else?

 

I ask because I've just built a new rig that should be able to run both, and have been tempted to provoke Comcast lately and try to host something from my house (as opposed to cloud as I've done in the past). I could also use my old rig, but I figured I would ask you folks first.

You know, if you have a different game key for the server, and install the game to two different directories, it may work.

 

But I would expect that it may say another iteration of the game is already running.  I don't know.  Don't know why I tried to answer this.

You cannot run the DServer that comes with IL-2 Sturmovik at the same time as you run the game. I believe that it's just due to the DServer having the same logon credentials as the game. However, you can get a free stand-alone DServer from 1CGS and run that at the same time as the game, on the same PC. For details, see "Chapter 11: Running Multiplayer Missions" in the IL-2 Sturmovik Mission Editor and Multiplayer Server Manual.
