[310th]310thCopperhead Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 So like it says....after years away i'm thinking of comming back to flight sims. I was very involved in the Original IL-2 series for well over a decade. So here are some questions I have. Which comes 1st? Stalingrad, Moscow or BoK? Please list in order of required purchase. (Will merg) Is this as good as the original (or at least better then 46) ? What's the best stick/throttle/rudder set up now. pls show make and model. Is track IR still in business and if they are is it compatible with this sim. How is the P-40? Being an American pilot this is important to me. (can it handle it's own or is this still a Luftwhiner sim with OP German aircraft?) Is a New Guinea campaign just a pipe dream or are the devs actually considering it? Is this sim historically accurate and do the devs give 2 flips about historical accuracy? Is this a server side game? Are there mods? (please don't let there be mods!) And is there cheating at all? Are custom skins/squadron regiments still a thing? (This might actually be a deal breaker for me.) IS there a QMB, A FMB, and offline/online campaigns? Are there any of the old hands still around. Bearcat, SmokeJag, Billfish or any of those old IL-2 ppl? (from the IL-2 Pilots Lounge or Hyper Lobby) That's all for now....if I think of anything more I'll ask as the thread continues.

(from the IL-2 Pilots Lounge or Hyper Lobby) That's all for now....if I think of anything more I'll ask as the thread continues. 1) It doesn't really work the old way, where you had to merge them in order. Most maps/servers are running aircraft from Stalingrad. A few have Moscow aircraft. Kuban is not out yet. 2) The flight models are better and the aircraft are modeled in greater detail. If you're looking for 80 flyables out of the box.... disappointment will follow. 3) Personal preference. Check out the VKB stuff. 4) yes and yes 5) The P-40 is (currently) garbage. FMs do and have changed. The sim does not feature OP german aircraft except for the 109F-4 which is widely known to be overperforming. However several Allied aircraft are like 60 km/h too fast at altitude also. The MiG-3 is an excellent high-altitude fighter. 6) Unsure, PTO doesn't interest me so I don't follow the news. 7) They do give multiple flips. Whether you consider it to be accurate enough is really only something you can decide. 8) Like any and every game, parts are client side and parts are server side. The only 100% server-side game is one that streams the entire game to you, including the client. There are no mods, but you can load e.g. new shaders via your GPU drivers to get better rendering (SweetFX) 9) You can make custom skins. There's no "regiment" option. You can just make whatever regimental skin you want. They're releasing a new campaign mode in a few months. 10) Yes 11) Bearcat is still here. SmokeJag I don't remember. I haven't seen BillFish in years. Edited December 9, 2016 by JG13_opcode
ElPerk Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 1. If you play multi, BoS. After that BoM. BoK looks interesting. Also consider grabbing Yak-1b if you're flying Allied and/or fighter. 2. Different. More realistic, better looking, more focused on particular few airplanes. I prefer BoS but YMMV. 3. Depends completely on your budget. What do you have in store?4. Yes and yes. You can also consider DIY or third party clips and cameras for approx. same performance at cheaper price. 5. The engine management is a mess but the plane itself is very popular in MP servers as a intermediate fighter-bomber. It's also beautiful and fun. 6. Probably pipe dream for this Il-2 generation. Devs have shown they consider Midway first and Okinawa second. Based on the history I see no reason to believe they're reconsidering their choices. 7. It is quite accurate indeed, more than 1946 and maybe, maybe? a bit less than CloD (dunno though). 8. No mods right now but are a planned feature. I have no idea how they fit that with multi. But it probably won't require 7 parallel installations with configured .ini files you open with CTRL-CLICK-SHIFT AFTER DISCONNECT or something ancient 9. Campaign mode is currently weak. New RoF-style mode should be released at some point quite soon. No coop campaigns yet, are planned. 10. vOv
Guest deleted@50488 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 (edited) All I can say is I bought the original IL2, and used it until the aircraft started to feel arcadish after the first patch released by Oleg... This IL-2 by 1C / 777 has probably one of the best flight dynamics I have found in any PC sim. IL-2 BoS, then BoM and still in pre-release is BoK. Welcome, I can't say welcome back, because I haven't been around other than since BoS was released... After DCS World, IL2-BoS was my second cut in the long hiatus away from combat flight simulation. Gambit21 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Come back. New Guinea not in the cards, but getting Midway for sure. After that Okinawa is proposed but not set in stone - you can see the link in my sig for my own point of view on that situation. Not a huge fan of the Eastern Front myself and drooling over the Pacific - but this sim is fantastic and I find myself enjoying this plane set immensely. (with what little stick time I get) Kuban is going to be great too - come back!

Hey Copperhead! 1. It really does not matter much. All of the new Il-2 series use the same engine and will be combined. From development timeline BoS was first, followed by BoM, which is the current module, and BoK which will start early access by the end of this month and should be released by the end of 2017. So if you get them all and once the new career mode is implemented (next summer) you will be able to start your career in Moscow (1941) and progress through Stalingrad (1942/43) to Kuban (1943). 2. I would say it is better. However that depends a lot on what you want. the new Il-2 is harder to master, it is more complex and requires more digging into the specific planes and characteristics, also engine management has come a further way. There are way less planes than in Il-2 '46 but the planes have about 10 times more development time on their part which makes them a lot more detailed. 3. There really isn't one. It's up to you to make a choice. I personally would recommend getting a full Hotas and some rudder pedals. 4. TrackIR is supported and working fine. 5. The P-40 is probably the hardest plane for allies to fly in this sim. It has got some issues. Its lateral stability is very low (something that should get fixed for all planes in the course of 2017 as I read it though) which makes it spin easily. Another thing is how engine limits are modeled in general in this sim. The problem the devs face is that every time you fly you will essentially get a new plane in a simulator with a new engine while in real life you would have to use your plane several times and watch out for your engines. So in Il-2 the engines have defined time limits after which an engine starts to fail (at a random time over those limits) and these limits are taken from the plane manuals. The P-40 1942 manual is quite conservative with engine limits and thus has a rather low power output. The guns shred everything though (except for tanks maybe ). As the P-40 is a very heavy plane the soviets often took 2 guns off the wing to make the plane more agile which you can also do ingame and which does indeed give some performance increase (just don't take additional ammunition as that will make you even heavier than with the 6 Brownings). Also: The P-40 does not have a manifold governor so you need to constantly watch and adjust your manifold pressure which can be quite tiresome. [Comment to Opcode: No plane is doing 60 kph more than it should. The most deviation a single plane has in Il-2 is ~25 kp/h at high altitude. As this concerns historical accuracy I will answer more on number 7] 6. The devs want to make Midway after Kuban and after Midway they plan for Okinawa but that is not absolutely sure as of now. 7. It definately is. This is not a matter of opinion. All performance charts have been thoroughly researched and the planes are modeled to match those charts. (Sometimes those charts are wrong though as were the community submitted FW-190 charts in early 2016 with a wrong clmax - now after the mistake has been found and other documents were brought up it will be fixed again) One thing that makes the planes performance harder to model 100% accurate than in the older Il-2s is the dynamic flight model, the actual behavior of a plane is a dynamic combination of various parameters that occur during flight (it is not 'on rails' as in '46) which gives a very good feeling of flight and actually "being there". The devs have set themselves a limit of 5% deviation maximum form the used charts at any altitude and the most deviation that was found was actually found was 3.2% if I remember correctly. (hence no 60 kp/h overperforming planes) Keep in mind though that a sim for a home computer cannot do everything right, you will come across some quirks, there is no way around that. 8. Server side? Not really sure what you mean. You will need an internet connection to play the game in normal mode and most servers are hosted by players or squads through dserver application. There are no mods yet although a Mods-On mode is planned, the Mods-On mode will however not include planes as moddable features. 9. There are a lot of custom skins around (take a look into the skins section of these forums ) Also it is planned to add the ability for own decals some time in the future (right now a skin can only have one hardpainted decal) How and why would this actually be a dealbreaker for you? (just interested to hear ) 10. There is. FMB is very complex though, JimTM has just released a very good manual about it: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/26303-il-2-sturmovik-mission-editor-and-multiplayer-server-manual/ Some online servers like TAW and Random Expert feature different online campaigns. Offline campaign still lacks a little although a lot is planned for this: In the summer the new career mode shall be released where you can create a custom pilot and fly generated missions. Aside of the Career there will be Dev-made and user-made scripted campaigns added. ("10 days of autumn" campaign will be the first one released - you can find it in the store) If you are looking for a career builder now there is a third party App called "PWCG" (Pat Wilsons Campaign Generator - https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/99-pwcg-bos/ ) 11. Bearcat is a high ranking moderator here have not seen the others though. Hope that answered some of your questions Jordan

(from the IL-2 Pilots Lounge or Hyper Lobby) That's all for now....if I think of anything more I'll ask as the thread continues. 1) Buy whatever you want, 99% of the online servers run with both extensions and you can fly with the planes you have, even if you don't have the 2 extensions (but I strongly recommend to buy both anyway, some interesting aircrafts in both!) 2) Impossible to say that it's better or worse than 46, it's simply different. You can "feel" the flight more, but it has drawbacks (some points are difficult to simulate and can involve bugs sometimes, and less planes because it's harder to get such a level of details!) 3) Depends on your budget, as always with sim rigs. If you have money, would definitely recommend Hotas Warthog coupled with MFG Crosswind rudder. 4) Yes it works, and nowadays you can find "cheap" (40-50$) trackIR systems easily on the internet. You can even find tutorials to build your own system for less money, if you have tools 5) I don't fly the P40, so I'll not answer (and shhhhhht don't say this word, you'll summon them!) 6) Midway is the next plan, probably Okinawa then. But nothing carved in stone yet, plans can change. 7) Depends on which player you listen, personally I find it more than acceptable! 8) Mh don't know if it's server side, I guess yes. No mods for now, and I never saw a cheater. Met some strange things sometimes, but it was mostly due to bugs or my floppy internet connection :D 9) Custom skins are available, but you can't see them in multiplayer if you don't have downloaded the skin. If your opponent has for example a full yellow skin and you didn't downloaded it, you'll see his plane with a default skin. So no immersion breaking! 10) There is for the moment 2 offline campaigns (one for Stalingrad and one for Moscow), a third one is incoming in few monthes and a new interesting campaign system is planned also for 2017. 11) Already answered on the previous posts
Dakpilot Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Not much to add most, has been covered. But some personal opinions on 5. the P-40 as I am a fan of them The P40 we get in game is the P-40E1 it is the model used by VVS at Stalingrad, sadly it is in reality and historically a 1941 aircraft, and the short tail version which has known issues, it also has the early engine There are/were a lot of expectations for P-40 but if flown as a fighter against the latest German aircraft you will be disappointed, the E1 is not the version that got the publicity and fame for its Stoic performance in Western Desert and other fronts, it was the long tail F, K,N and others however flown as fighter bomber it can be great fun, and also effective .50 cals are good when got on target, if flown historically (not as lone wolf but part of a team) it probably will fair the same as did with VVS in reality, which was not too bad, but is outclassed by later 109's and Fw 190. If you keep the speed up and fly it to its advantages it can still perform Future patch coming (in internal testing I believe?) which will affect all aircraft rudder/roll coupling interaction, should have slightly more positive benefit to the large ruddered P-40 than the other aircraft, Cheers Dakpilot

6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 The P-40, as any other Heavy Single Engined Fighter, grows exponentially in potential once flown in an organized fashion. 1

BlitzPig_EL Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Hey Copperhead, been a while. The P40 is really not much of a fighter in this sim so far. It can work as a good ground attack bird, if you have some Yaks escorting. However, if you need to mix it up with Jerry, then you better be in an I-16 or a Yak 1b. It hurts me to say that, as the P40 is my baby, but as currently modeled, only a masochist would take it into harms way. 1
simplyjames Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 As a counter perspective on the p40 its one of my favorites. It won't go toe to toe with a 109 but its great fun as a hit and run/ground attacker. Not much can argue with 6 50cals.

Its all relative And there will be more realistic games in the Future (maybe) if we don't drift into ultimate idiocracy. But in terms of recreating Real Life Manouvers in the Sim RoF/Il-2 does the best Job so far, better than DCS. Mostly things like Adverse Yaw and Prop Torque (although Prop Torque may be undermodelled to appeal to wider audiences) but in general the Slip/Spin/Stall/Adverse Yaw effects are the best of the Combat Flight Sims out there. I hope the Flight Model and Physics will advance without being Over-Simplified. 1

Wandalen Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Welcome back old fart! Just buy the whole shubang and be happy, its a must for all online pilots
wtornado Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 It has been a while. The last time I wrote to Billfish I was looking to see what had happened to BrushHogg he disappeared. And that is a quite few years back. The days of flying like on the hyperlobby are over...so far who knows? Game is getting better but multiplayer is not so great for me anyways the game often disconnects most of the servers are in Russia. The offline looks more promising for me if all they they have talked about comes out. Dserver system is easier to use than the old server commander systems for IL-21946 The mission editor well.... I will let you take a look at it and let you come to your own conclusion I spoke enough about it. Co-ops mode is on its way I do not want to speculate when though. Rise of Flight in co-op mod runs really well I recommend it and the multiplayer aspect of it is very stable. 439th_Wtornado
