TheSNAFU Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 SNAFU back in the day. EAW, WWII Fighters, CFS, BOB 1 n 2, Longbow, Mig Alley, Falcon and original IL2. Man I loved the campaign in EAW, and then the incomparable Rowan's BoB and BoB 2 WOV. Mostly online with IL2. Dem were the days!! 1

Flight sims, developers, and people have changed... Trying to re-invent the wheel, when what we had only needed to be enhanced to modern day specs. God, I wish we could go back to those times, but with the modern tech we have today... Still, I am glad to be able to say I was there in the glory days... I've seen nothing like it since. Well said. Back then I knew it was IL2 golden years but only now after all this time I realise Oleg`s sim was something so special. Many things needed to coincide at the same time and place to make the series go big and it happened. Sadly not what we have now but that`s the reality. Edited May 23, 2018 by Mac_Messer

I miss “Ming”-glish. Yeah Loft just didn’t get it, a proper career and Hyperlobby-type functionality should have been priority from day one rather than the asinine, gamey grinding for unlocks and air-quake servers. The ship has been righted, but doesn’t mean the money exists to give us true co-ops/Hyperlobby functionality back - but I hope so. I’ll be offline only for the most part until then. That is until we get Zekes vs Wildcat back anyway.
Nils Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Cheers, a little late clockin’ in. I used to be JG301_Nils ( I also had a incognito nick , Masaryk ? but never revealed it ) Got my first taste of the game in the leaked demo. Bought my first, early december 2001. Loved it from the first day, but eventually it cooled off, the squad disbanded and I guess sadly life just demanded too much and I never had the time anymore. I still think about that happy time with Hyperlobby up and running and a lot of really nice people online.. I see Ian Boys was visiting here too. I helped making 3D stuff for the Burma and the Norway add-on, I even modelled my own house into the game ?) I sometimes lookes into youtube videos of the new game, and must admit it’s really tempting to go at it again ... It’s looking now, like we imagined it was doing then ?
danielprates Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 (edited) I only flew single player, so I dont know if I would be accepted in this worshipful society... but I've been playing this since the original Il2, before all expansions came along. I still remember how advanced it felt next to "european air war" ....come to think of it, I've been flying thins kind of sim since "aces over ..." and "1942 pacific air war" and the advance in these mere 25 years or so is amazing, when put in perspective. Berious Posted May 27, 2019 Posted May 27, 2019 Hey guys, was Sparky (later BlitzPig_Sparky) back in the day. Started playing IL2 with that demo that got put out. I remember being blown away seeing g-force simulated by moving your head position around as you banked and turned. Haven't played a sim for years but saw BOS 66% off on Steam so it's time to dust off the joystick and get back in! Good to see some familar names still around. 1
TWC_Ace Posted May 27, 2019 Posted May 27, 2019 (edited) I was there since IL2 DEMO. German planes had larger icons on the sky and VVS planes were super uber hihi. I was PE_Tvrle then. Later I became =VARP= Tvrdi. I miss hyperlobby and COOPS from old il2 days.... Edited May 27, 2019 by =VARP=Tvrdi

falle96 Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 I played IL-2 when I was very young, but I never touched the online mode unfortunately. I was barely capable of keeping the plane off the ground, let alone killing anything or doing well online. It's a shame.
EAW_Titan20MM Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) I've had an online presence starting with European Air war and Fighter Ace 2 on the MSN Gamin zone back in '99, i would also bounce to WWII Fighters to experiment. I also Suffered a bit through Activision's Fighter Squadron: Screaming Demons over Europe and the utterly dreadful Luftwaffe Commander (*shudders*) IL-2 was like finding hidden treasure. It wound up being my christmas present, i still remember those .bat files to unlock the swastika and flyable AI bombers (even if they had no cockpit!) IL-2 1946 online was a blast, i'd fly the BF 109 E-7 and the Heinkel 111 in dogfights... hey i never said i was trying to win! ? Edited May 28, 2019 by EAW_Titan20MM
blitze Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 Ah the old Il2 and Hyperlobby days. Glad their behind and looking forward to Bodenplatte ? Think I was flying with JG77 those days. Jiri had to bump up the capacity a few times.. I have always been Bearcat ... I had a 99 at the end of my name on UBI .. and a 99th_ at the front on Hyperlobby .. The IL2 community was actually my first online community to speak of.. I look at some of these names here .. and it amazes me that I have been talking to some of you folks for 17 years... I came to IL2 in 2002 .. I bought the big box original after I upgraded my rig for CFS 3 .. I came to UBI and was immediately taken with the whole atmosphere.. When I started the 99th I used Jason's 777 AVG and the BPs as kind of a template for the website ... after the guys came over from CFS the rest was history.. I still have IL2 on my HD .. I just don't have much time to fly much at all these days between the life changes and the music.. but I am caught up with IL2GB.. except for FC and TC ... and I still will most likely get them for S&Gs once my situation settles down a bit.. and I am still waiting for that Pony .. It is really great to see this community and what it has turned into 7 years .. wow .. 7 years down the road.. The early days of IL2GB were very ... tumultuous.. but I am glad that things have settled down and that this sim is shaping up like many knew from the jump that it would.. 1 1 1
Jaegermeister Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 I can't believe I just noticed this thread but it is what it is. I was Bird_brain since the original IL2 forum. I never flew much online but I made lots of missions and offline campaigns and generally just flew those. Then I started flying online for a while on Hyperlobby in the Pacific Fighters days. I kind of bailed for a while after CLoD came out and then got back into it with Battle of Stalingrad. I hate cold weather and snow so it was really discovering VR that got me interested again. It's a whole new experience and I can't hit a thing on a flat screen any more. ~S~

TWC_Ace Posted May 29, 2019 Posted May 29, 2019 (edited) Its amazing that ppl who were "here" almost 20 yrs ago are still somehow passionate about the IL2 genre. Spindrift Posted May 29, 2019 Posted May 29, 2019 Had to pipe up... I bought the original IL-2 in 2001, on a trip to Manhattan of all places, at about age 16, coming off of ‘Jane’s (Arcade-y) WW2 Fighters’ and was completely overwhelmed but the level of authenticity and depth of realism in systems and controls... I sadly never flew it online but did fly it against a friend in an local mall Internet gaming cafe that hosted LAN matches (wow, ancient history...). That same friend a few years later had a powerful gaming PC and Pacific Battles, and it blew my mind. Regrettably I never had a PC worth it’s salt to run it myself until I got obsessed with FSX around 2010, now P3D, where horsepower is the only solution (there’s no replacement for displacement, as they say) I confess I did hit rock bottom when I stumbled into the gutter called War Thunder for a time (-shudder-). Although The Battle of Britain is probably my favorite historical scenario, I’ve never given CLoD the time of day... just from it’s initial release problems... but having become attuned to the new IL-2 “Great Battles” series, I don’t know if I could go back a half-step to Team Fusion’s Blitz Edition (which steam gave me for free for some reason, I think it’s because I bought a copy of IL-2 1946 on sale for shiggles). I really do desire 777/1CGS continued success and support and a long comprehensive life like it’s predecessor, and although Team Fusion has been working hard on (CLoD) Battle of Britain and now this supposed North Africa expansion, I do pray that both areas eventually come to the Great Battles game series as well... would be a shame to have some theatres of war split into separate game engines..... although when (not IF, WHEN) we get to the Pacific, I’ll be over the moon! Only ever used the simple handle “Spindrift” in any game, if you’ve seen it, you’ve most likely seen me. P.S. .... why doesn’t Team Fusion’s excellent pool of talent just fuse (sorry-not-sorry) with 777-1CGS? One big happy family with one united purpose.......
GrinderX9 Posted May 30, 2019 Posted May 30, 2019 Hi. I got the IL2 Demo back in 2001. Remember trying to take off and crashing again and again, and I fell instantly in love with the game ? . because it was hard to master and realistic crash physics. But it was not until I was in the military back in 2003 I finally obtained a copy. I was in communication and we had access to lots of computers, so I played lots of IL2 in my free time (and sometimes in my work time :P) I played IL2 nearly every day from 2003 to 2011. I mostly played singel player, when I played online it was mostly whit bombers. I read the Ubi forums regular, but seldom wrote anything, because English is not my first language and because of my dyslexia. I startet playing this game as soon as it got VR support
Fornixx Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Can't believe I found this thread. Played Il2 from 2002 to around 2009 going through Forgotten Battles, 1946, The Pacific theatre and more but played very little online. As for many others it was my first online forum and although I was mostly a lurker I remember both fondly and with dread the debates and flamewars in the old Ubizoo. The Fw190 can't see over the windshield debate, RayBanJockeys epic trim-on-a-slider, what's his name the Troll-king-half-nazi of SimHQ who challenged people to physical fights and much more. Haven't played a sim for 10 years due to kids, moving, career and general adulthood. Even though I was in no way a central figure in the community back then I remember a lot of the callsigns posting here. Those were great days. I may just kick my son of his PC one of these days and fire up the old Me109 once more.
blitze Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) Been around since the old il2 days. Always as blitze. Had a break for a few years after a lack luster CLoD release and came into the Battle Series in the last couple of years. Ah the days of HyperLobby. Forgot to mention my air fighting sidelining fav game which included tanks was Red Orchestra. That was a lot of fun and well done. Edited September 1, 2019 by blitze Additional info 1
Guster Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 I picked up a copy of the original IL2 by coincidence in 2002, I think it was, and was blown away. Then came FB, Aces Expansion, Pacific Fighters and whatnot. I flew a lot on WarClouds as Monson, but quit around 2006 to focus on writing and recording music. And yes, 'Monson' was a nod to Mick Ronson.

Stoopy Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 (edited) Cryptic post above makes me wonder, where's Elwood from WoP???? Cool dude. Not that anyone might care but I've always been Stoopy since 2002. Mostly JG300-Stoopy as part of a fearsome and stinky squad of virtual Wilde Saunen in JG300 (for CFS3) and then later, WS/JG300 in IL2 1946, since there was already that "other" squad with the same name in that sim (fine buncha folks they are though!). Good reason why reputation and sportsmanship is always of paramount importance - many of us will be playing together for many years to come, I hope! Sometimes I get misty about those memories - so as it's Friday, a toast to my past fellow friends and foes of the JG300 Swines, "Stinkin' Up The Place.... with Sty'le!" ?? Lupus Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 I've been flying as Lupus since this was released in Europe in December of 2006. In fact, I ordered and had shipped across the pond a European version of the game because I didn't want to wait on the March release of this title in the US. I flew with 2 different squads and ran my own for a short time. USN, JG-53, and RAF-65. I've thoroughly enjoyed IL-2 GB so far, although I will admit, I miss carrier landings and being able to fly the Corsair.
