Tips on Making Ju88 Spiral?

Recommended Posts

So I'm working on a fictional Finnish Winter Ju88 (As there seems to be no Winter Finnish camos on the net real or fake)

It's a very weird Spiral technique as there is a front spiral hub which I can do just fine, but thats just the very front of the spiral hub, then from there it's a square box I must turn into spirals.

I'd prefer to know how to do it, I'd rather not just copy and paste from other skins as I'd like to have something of my own, but if no one has an answer on how to do it but they have a PSD file of the spiral skin they made that could be helpful.

I really hope it's not just trial and error, and it seems sort of confusing that the Ju88 has 4 circles for propellor hubs, I'm sure the skinning process for spiral hubs is the same amongst all twin engines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best I could do without painting directly onto the model. The corkscrew is two different UVs, and it's difficult to line twirl up correctly. I've cheated a little bit by filling in the "cap" UVs, and then twirling the back portion of corkscrew. In order for it to look correct, you also have to line up the twirl where the UV cut is on the back of the cork.  I've saved it as a PSD file, assuming that you want to modify the color or what have you.

Hmm I wonder if there is a 3D skinning program thats basically like the model viewer and Phtotoshop/Same time, so which of the 4 circles does what, the template says some are left and the other 2 are right but I don't see why there is two, just another hassle to line up with it's low res...if only youcould skin a planein complete vector graphics. Probably too resource intensive.

I might just trace over another skins spinners and apply to my plane. I need something that will convert what I want onto the 3D surface.

Again, if I had the model, I could easily skin a corkscrew with 3D Studio Max, Maya, or zBrush (all 3D programs with "3D skinning"). The major problem here is the UV layout of the corkscrew, and as a texture painter without the model - you basically have to deal with it. There's two sets because one set is with the engine idle, and the other is with the engine going. I've rasterized the vector path I created in Photoshop, but I can give you the path if you'd like.

I'm working on trying to acess the in-game files with unGTP, but I get an unknown error, I extracted the skins out of Skins2.GTP earlier and all the dds files seem corrupted although their files match in size, perhaps they did some weird encryption. I was hoping I could fix the official In-game skins, like the Finnish Bf109 G2 because the butchered Hakaristi looks sort of dumb, they might as well of just replaced it with the FAF's current insignia.

Ugh, they could at least let us use official camos for others to see and change our skins to be corrected. Like in Snow maps using a custom camo makes your plane very visible, they could easily allow us to use custom skins over our official skins but they haven't changed it.

We should all vote for this in suggestions, I will make a thread there

The devs did encrypt the GTP files, because it's WAS way to easy to make a hot pink/neon green/very flashy color skin on the official files and then rezip them. Here's an example:

All I did was take the JU88 skin and add a pink overlay over it. Players will use whatever advantage they can get (stabilizer exploit anyone?). Because of this, the devs will never let us modify the regular skins.

Ahh I see, maybe they could make an official skin changer that only works for your team or a custom small decal placing system or something, I would love for friendly planes to have different numbers or letters making each teammate individual.

So you could be plane 6 and one of your friends could be 7 etc without making a ton of skins. I think DCS has asimilar system where planes will have their own unique number.

But yeah, exploiters ruining all the nice things, I'd also like to be able to change my planes gun sounds, especially for turrets.

When they upgrade to DX11 (not that DX9 doesn't have shaders), maybe they can add shaders to the various planes. This way we can keep the official skins, and the devs can (over time) add unique numbers and logos like Black Desert Online does. In my example below, it's the same model with various shaders applied to it. Obviously, we don't need the plane to adjust in size, but adding tattoos, blemishes, war paint or scars all work through shaders in the engine. Warthunder is another game that does shaders for logos and numbers. They even use the shader system as a means to get money. And, as Warthunder has proven, it's easy to implement and players like the customization. Additionally, the devs can keep putting out official logos/numbers to keep quality control of the changes to the planes via shaders.

And here's a Warthunder example:

If the devs created a system like this without the monetization, it would be great.

Seriously if only each plane got it's own identifier!

You can make your own numbers / noseart or whatever in photoshop and GIMP and add them as layers.

Someone has made spirals for one one of the 109 models, maybe do a forum search?

I handmade a spiral for the Ju-88 some time ago, could pass it over if you're still interested.

The FISH shall have it!

Did it with Gimp with help of the template included wiremesh only. No external software or sth, just too much time and nerves of steel.

It's not perfect but close enought in my opinion.

Do we have permission to use the spiral on skins we make and post online?  Just clarifying, I might make some additions to the "~8GB Skinpack" and a spiral on my custom non-historical Winter-Finnish Ju88 would be great.

Nice signature, is there a poll or something to support the addition of the Ju52?  I'm trying to get a few changes to the game made to like the Ju88 being able to use it's front gun from the pilot seat (The put a sight and the mounted gun lock in there for a reason)

On another note, does anyone know of some good fonts for the markings on sides of planes, I was wondering what to use.  Like what font did most German planes use for their markings and if anyone knows what font the Finns used that would be great (probably not as accessible information but I like the Finnish War effort)

Has a Dx11 update of Battle of Stalingrad been announced or are you just saying maybe a future IL-2 game that will use it?

I really hope they decide to create a War of the Pacfic game, Americans and Japanese carrier fighting would be amazing as well as Island airfields.

Sure you can use it for anything you want.

There's a poll if you want to support the Tante Ju: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/844-tante-ju/

Simmer's paint shop used to have all this kind of stuff. There's still a site offering them for download:

Fonts: http://www.logtnest.nl/downloads/fonts/

Markings: http://www.logtnest.nl/downloads/markings/

For german aircraft usually 2 fonts are suitable. The "Blockschrift für Flugzeuge" is the most common one while some aircraft (usually bombers and Stukas) use a font very similar to the RAF one. If you want to know for sure which one to go by you should try to compare it to real pictures.

There's lots of more material availabel here in the forum as well so you might want to check that out, too.
