Yep, I can only agree with that: if you get  IL2 BOS with Vive support on Steam, I'm pretty much certain you will cover any cost you might have had for implementing VR. Currently whenever something new shows up for Vive on reddit it attracts a lot of attention, and I've regularly seen people ask for vr flight sims on the Vive sub-reddit. In fact I'd argue (I know, I might sound like a borken record) that you could do the same with RoF and attract a brand new wave of (1) media attention (2) fresh sales for RoF using VR

Regarding the situation awareness how about the seeking and spotting enemy in long distance with VR? Such thing still needs to be confirmed.

We had a 100Mb update after 2.002b but no statement of what was in... any clue?

It still says 2.002b so propably something in the hotfix didn't work as it shoud or was left out and the 100Mb still are part of the first hotfix

Finally took a short flight in VR yesterday. Initially I forgot to disable direct mode and got BSOD, but then I followed the instructions closely and I was able to fly without major issues. GUI needs some work obviously, the head movement lag/smoothing needs to be removed, I'm also not sure if I like motion blur in VR, but the feeling of being there is amazing. I shot some ground targets, aiming in Bf-109 is awesome with reticle visible in right eye only.

Thank you for VR work. Looking forward to more polished implementation. Now I have the reason to buy Battle of Moscow too. :)

Is this bug only new on my side:  CTD when hitting Apply after changing force/shake value ?

The fact that Jason is obviously unhappy with the release of this preliminary Vive support, and - judging by people's comments - it's a deeply inadequate arrangement at present, and yet it still seems to be "amazing" and "awesome", bodes seriously well for the future!  :cool:

I'd love to be aiming through the 109's recticle with one eye! Maybe next year (after that big win at Monte Carlo)... Thanks, team, for keeping the Vive stuff in the sim.

A question: does VR make landing (by that I mean judging when to flare and how far off the runway you are) easier?

Once you're in the cockpit it's pretty damn good. There are issues, lots of them actually, but most of them looks like initial problems to be polished later.

Landing is a bit different, I had to adjust, but it's quite natural now. It's not related to Il2, but flying helicopters in VR is MUCH easier. Sense of scale is a great help.

Yeah, regarding landing the difference is best noticed when flying helos (to the point that's it's super easy for me to fly any helo in DCS now), but in FSX (using FlyInsideFSX) I often land much better now because I get a much better perception of my height in the very final moments before touching down, so I expect we'll experience that too in IL2.

I often see the question of spotting planes at a distance. Sure, it's not as easy to spot things as on a monitor right now, but with the Vive compared to the DK2 it has improved a lot already, and if you fly with icons on then it's not an issue at all. Seriously, once you've experienced the amazing feeling of being in the cockpit which VR gives you I think going a small step backwards in term of planes spotting versus all the rest will feel like a non issue. I personally just can't get enough of simming in VR so I've simply not played an flight sim on my monitor any more (since mid 2014 when I first got my DK2).

I'd love to have VR support in RoF too... Open cockpit cars in Project Cars are awesome in VR, one can imagine how stellar it would be in those early airplanes...

I will wait until more of the issues with Vive are ironed out before I try it again, but I am also very excited about the future of VR flight swimming - much like I felt when I first used a TrackIR.

Yep, I'll wait.... for one, at the moment it's far to expensive to buy anyway (for me)... and for another, there are too many bugs and problems being reported, plus, I'm happy to plod along with my trusty trackir.

Just noticed I cannot replay the scripted missions in the campaign anymore.  I hope this is a bug, cause they were much more enjoyable than the other ones.  I have replayed every scripted mission over and over just to unlock the skins for each plane.  Please give us the ability to replay the scripted missions again.  This sucks.

Did someone from the Pro-user Oculus Rift & HTC Vive tested this here http://www.vorpx.com/features/

According to this product it should allow using Oculus Rift & HTC Vive for games that are not designed for it?

Posted (edited)

I'm not using vorpx and I do not plan to use it because it is kind of senseless to have VR in games that do not actually support it. This especially applies for ego shooter because there is no proper movement but only the default WASD control scheme that tends to make you sick very fast because you are moving in the game but not in the real world. This messes up your vestibular system because it gives higher priority to the visual input and you will become motion sick due to inconsistent information. Some people are more sensitive to this than other but in general most people do not tolerate that very much.

I rather play games that are optimized for VR because menus and other stuff also is optimized for using it in VR. However the motion sickness issue is not that much present in car simulations or flight simulations because the cockpit gives you a fixed frame to focus on. That makes it much easier to tolerate but the first times might feel a little weird as well. But it gets better rather fast.

I remember the same sort of thing being said when Track IR was first introduced,and then never heard of it being a problem again... :blink:

Why is it practically impossible to black out now during maneuvers? Lagg (just because that's the last one I tested) for example will simply not allow me to black out...what am I doing wrong?

I nearly blacked out in my Yak while fighting AI 109s and looping the loop!

I did try it. It works fine for some games, not so great for others. It is worse than having the game optimized for VR but sometimes it works surprisingly well for games that aren't. It's a pity they don't have a demo available. Rise of Flight works okay with it. I haven't tried BOS/BOM yet. I really hope BOS/BOM will have native support for the Oculus although I doubt it, since from what I know it requires directx 11. But you never know ....

Ok, my internet connection came back enough that I could finish updating, so I was able to try VR.

Following the instructions, I had no issues starting it in VR. In fact the GUI is ok, I had to deal with worse cases before (early DCS gui for example where some things couldn't not be seen at all and you had to learn to blindly find where to click), if I adjust the hmd I can always see the gui elements and click them.

Once in the cockpit, everything looked great. The issue was the head tracking lag or judder. I guess there is something wrong with retroprojection not working at all or not working properly. Because it's not using Direct Mode, I suspected the good old refresh problems that used to occur between the Rift DK2 and main monitors, so I tried switching the Vive to being the primary display, but that didn't solve any of the head tracking issues.

It seems the framerate is generally good enough (ie if you don't move your head, or move it slowly, the rest of the simulation looks good, it doesn't stutter), so the VR implementation is probably close to being usable, just that hurdle to clear. As others have suggested, Direct Mode will probably help. I'll be happy to test things as fixes become available, so please share VR in further updates as Jason suggested (and no need to apologise really. I think all current VR users are the sort of users who are ready to experiment and tweak things)

To answer the posts about vorpx, I own it - sometime if works fine for some games, but for IL2 BOS or RoF not really. I once got it to work, albeit without stereo 3D, for RoF, but I can't get it to launch with the current version, and I never got IL2 BOS to launch with it. I wouldn't count on vorpx at all basically, it's been out for a long time but support is focused on big AAA games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

I'll try that later. I hope that its a bug too, otherwise I would not be able to understand this decision. I liked those missions a lot and want to fly them more than one time. If they do all of this because of their unlocks then they should rather get rid of those.

I managed to repair my viewport in the He 111. It seems that I did press F10 instead of F12 several times and that messed it up. It was a little bit tricky to restore it but it works now.

I also changed these config settings in startup.cfg (the file you set or_enable = 1).

[KEY = camera]
    cinematic = 0
    head_smooth = 0.00000
    shake = 0

Not sure if it really made a difference but it should not be too bad. You might want to backup your old config for being able to easily restore them if you would like to fly without VR again (very unlikely but just in case). :biggrin:

Can anyone help me or get me in the right direction how to solve the D3DERR_DEVICELOST issue?

Everytime I try to get the VIVE working I get a D3D-Error message - D3DERR_DEVICELOST

What is causing this? SLI Mode?

- I have followed the steps here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=713397265

- VSYNC is OFF and FRAME Rate off

- Low resolution

- High settings

Thanks Boomerang.

Yes the driver is updated but as I figured from your link I might need to uninstall the cards and it's drivers and start from the beginning again.

...Will update with my progress later...

One should be able to repeat scripted campaign missions not just be able to do them once. This is a bummer.. :(

It must be a bug. This was possible before.

I tried supersampling in reverse to make the game perform better using the HTC Vive. I set renderTargetMultiplier to 0.5 and the game seems to accept the value because everything got very blurry because of the lower rendering resolution. Unfortunately it did not seam to improve the performance on my GTX 980. But maybe it does make a difference for some of you guys. Obviously this will make it very hard to aim down the sights again but if it does work fine using 0.5 for you you can slowly increase it again. In the future this also could be used to make it render at even higher resolution. This also makes people yelling for 4k displays in the Vive very questionable because it looks damn good using high settings like 2.5. It really makes a difference but it also requires more powerful computer hardware again.

But I suppose it won't make a performance difference for you guys here as well. I think the game due to not being in Direct Mode does render at the Desktop resolution or whatever still which makes this pointless. The game really needs to work in Direct Mode and I'm sure it will improve perfomance already.

Still no access to VIVE mode in IL2 after a complete new install of nvidia drivers with Uninstall then DDU Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe mode. New install of latest driver and after reboot I still get the D3DERR_DEVICELOST error

- Although I have found out that with the HTC Vive attached (USB) with the PC I will not get any access to MOBO BIOS Screen - it seems that the display drivers jump that patrt

Anyone else has the same experience?

Vive the statement about Vive support:

Thanks for explaining it.  Even though it's not really playable in VR at the moment because of poor FPS/lack of direct mode (vive)... The visuals in VR are very good.

I am one of the ones who got angry because I spent half a day trying to get it running in VR and eventually learned it didn't support direct.

I posted an annoyed steam review so I will modify that now and I hope the VR development continues until it's fully playable.

The new rank system in Campaign mode is looking good to me. Before 2.002, it was absolutely impossible to complete a mission in the Il-2 M41 with my pilot rank at Level 10. Now, it's actually been possible, with my pilot rank at Lieutenant. :good:

I don't know if this is a new feature, but here goes;

I had an excellent Campaign mission in the fourth Moscow chapter last night. Performing an airfield attack in an E-7 on a short mission, I spawned 20kms out and immediately ran into multiple flights of contacts. 2 flights of Peshkas were evading friendly interceptors while Mig escorts fought them off. I stayed low under the furballs (made spectacular by low level contrails, is that new?) and struck out for the target airfield.

On arrival I had time only to make one bombing pass on parked aircraft and fuel trucks before once again the air was buzzing with contacts. One of the flights of Peshkas had returned from its mission and was landing at the airfield I was attacking! I ordered my wingmen to attack the aircraft and kept my eyes peeled for Migs while I scrambled for altitude. With at least 15 aircraft over the field (and more ground objects them I felt normal) things got crazy fast. I strafed one Peshka on the ground, took pot shots at a single Mig (I received kill notification later) and caused I fuel leak on a Peshka in the pattern before his belly gunner (or enemy AA) damaged my engine, forcing me home.

I have performed dozens of airfield attacks and never had an experience this exciting. Has something changed?

Albino
