  2. 2. Do you have dx 12 compatible hardware?

    • Yes I have
      160
    • I have a compatible dx11 card but I will upgrade to a newer card anyhow.
      11
    • No I have not, but I would be willing to get it if the engine gets updated to this standard.
      11
    • No I will definately not buy new hardware & I have got no Nvidia Dx11 card (compatible to dx12) and none of the following Ati series cards: http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/amd-released-list-of-compatible-directx-12-cards.html

  3. 3. Dx12 is Windows 10 exclusive, would you update you system to get the benefits of dx12?

    • I already have Windows 10.
      151
    • I would change to Windows 10 for that update.
      10
    • I am not willing to upgrade my Windows version for dx12.

Wouldn't DX12 actually help make that possible since it can reduce the load on the CPU?

To be honest, DirectX10/11/12 take the load off the CPU and (rightfully) put it on the GPU. That means that if you don't have a I7 6700k, or something along those lines once 1 C introduce DirectX10 and over, then it's just overkill, although wi DirectX 9 you need all the CPU you can get!

While DX10 and DX11 are more efficient in CPU overhead compared to DX9 they are still pretty much restricted to use only one core for draw calls, they don't "take the load of CPU" it is a matter of feeding the GPU the info faster

DX12 is a very big difference in the way it operates, see the vid in post #27 of this thread for comparison of efficiency of DX11 compared to DX12

Now that they just introduced VR support, DX12 becomes even more imperative.

If I understand this correctly... Speaking of "draw calls" 3D requires drawing everything twice. That's not the same hit as running 2x the resolution. Much more demanding. That's why users on DCS even with top level hardware will see their FPS plunge around cities etc. They're only getting half the ideal frame rate of 90 FPS with all the graphics set to min.

because DX11 is still limited by the API sending commands through the CPU.

Flight sims draw huge numbers of objects compared to other games.

DX 12, yes..

(To be honest,  I would prefer Open GL tho. Open GL: Win, Mac and Linux).

I'm glad someone finally decided to poll the communities opinion on visual enhancements to the game, I doubt the developers would know of our desire for improved visuals or the benefits of a DX12 engine without this.

I also doubt if any of the requests made here are at all complicated, time consuming or expensive. We'll probably see all this and multi-threading in the next patch.

The idea was to get some numbers together in regards to dx12, I can see nothing wrong with that.

I would like to change my answer to DX11...thank you.

My sole concern is about the future of this sim and as we all know this is linked to the sale of the sim. The sale of PC games is about advertising and “rumours”  spread on the net, the DX9 and DX11 games are history regarding ‘optics’, no hysteria on the net, will be sold at the mall in big basket with numerous other ;“PC GAMES 3.99$”  whereas the DX 12 games’ will be found on the shelves at significantly higher price and status. The diff btw DX9 vs. DX11 is, as I have seen on Youtube,  small or even negative whereas DX 12 carries both a  positive buzz-word as the promise of a future and increased performance.

Dude go do more research and come back later when you feel better.

It's encouraging that Jason mentioned this as taking a matter of months. Some of us were assuming years based upon the example of another sim which created a new DX11 graphics engine...

Although of course DX12 is newer and has advantages. If the timetable for this is just months then it obviously has to be DX11. Only 40% of the market is ready right now for DX12

I agree Sharpe...I have Dx12 games I play now but in no way do I feel disappointed by DX11...its all good news.

Hey if they can do DX11 in a few months maybe someday they'll do DX12 in a few months!

Ha. I certainly hope so. Once they buy those 10 core Intel chips for their office PC's we should be in good shape.

Has Vulcan ever been considered? It offers the same low level functionality as DX12, but does not require a specific OS. That way, we could both the people on Win 10 and those still on 7 and 8 benefit from the new API (and even possibly a Linux port at some point).

That's a question to ask Developers. It certainly would be good to know where are we heading with new technologies.

Windows 10 runs great on all the of the systems I've upgraded (2 laptops and my desktop). I've had zero issues. It is honestly the best OS windows had released to date in my eyes. I'm all for the move to DX12 as well, but i do understand the concerns held by many people who's rigs might not be up to the task. I'm running a gtx980, 16 gig ram, and an i7-4790k so I'm not really worried about much. Those who havent upgraded their systems in a few years might struggle with some of the changes but technology does move forward. That's part of the allure of PC gaming, isn't it?

I've actually upgraded my fathers 7-year old notebook to W10 and its running smoother so even older hardware might benefit. Problem with W10 is that its still not that popular among population, as far as I remember about 400 mln people use it right now, when you compare it to how many still use W7 and W8 ... But in next 1-2 years it will quickly change, since Microsoft really tries to make everyone change to W10 and that they cut support to older systems. Imo Dx 12 wouldnt be such a bad idea for future and advantages it brings are really impressive, especially in terms of hardware utilization.

Vulkan may just be the answer..

If anything - Vulkan would be the way to go.

It covers all Windows versions and opens the path to new platforms if ever so desired (still hoping for a linux port one day ;-) ).

DX12 simply does not make any sense, if you do not want to split your community - Win10, however loved by some, is equally despised by others.

Vulcan seems to be way better than Dx12 from all i read so far. If anything i would prefer Vulcan

Well If there should be another engine upgrade, it will likely not be before 2020. So till then there is enough room to think about whats next :)

But to be honest: I don't think a rewrite to Vulcan will happen. It just wouldn't make sense to write a whole new engine while there already is one working rather well.

Thread is ancient and long forgotten but perhaps its time to shake the dust off and take a look of whats happening.

This was announced recently: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=AMD-GPUOpen-V-EZ

Quote

AMD's GPUOpen group in cooperation with Khronos today is announcing V-EZ, a new project of theirs designed to make the barrier to entry for the Vulkan graphics API lower. V-EZ provides a middleware layer and simplified API for making it easier to get started with Vulkan development.

V-EZ provides an "easy mode" to Vulkan by reducing the amount of boilerplate code to get started with Vulkan development and making the API easier/simpler to understand by new developers.

V-EZ is compatible with existing Vulkan drivers and is engineered to add minimal overhead to Vulkan games/applications. The V-EZ library makes use of native Vulkan types, provides much simpler memory management and frees the developer from needing to become familiar with the low-level details, the software doesn't need to deal with the management of descriptor set pools, OpenGL Shading Language (GLSL) has first-class support under V-EZ as well as SPIR-V, and other simplifications.

This is far from being the first project for trying to provide a simplified interface for getting started with Vulkan. In fact, another GPUOpen project has been their Anvil framework that is a Vulkan wrapper library aiming to reduce the amount of time needed to start writing Vulkan applications from scratch. Given AMD/GPUOpen involvement, it will be interesting to see if it takes off any further than the other efforts in this area.

V-EZ code should be appearing shortly over on GitHub and will be interesting to dive in with this new open-source Vulkan wrapper effort.

Last time someone asked about it (Vulkan application) was almost 2 years ago during Q&A with Jason and given reply of implementation of it was negative. Now that competition is implementing it and effort is made to lower requirements, perhaps its time to reconsider it ? Especially since game becomes more and more demanding.

Also, for those wondering, Win10 is a very good OS despite all the creepy things you can read about privacy.

People told me that about Facebook and social media for years and I still don't have it...

oddly enough they don't talk to me about Facebook anymore :)

Windows 10, by default want you to accept that they have access to ALL of your data...everything. And to change these privacy settings, you have to first accept them...

Horse...stable door...bolted
