As already said, map and compass. Most importantly, note where you take off, and where do you want to go from there, the heading there from the airfield AND the reverse heading to get back home. Also, easily visible landmarks between the airfield and the target which you can track your progress with. Plus, some planes have radio navigation instruments, youtube has some nice tutorials on how to use them.
