Saturday Night Bombers Flight

I made a video of our glorious Sturmovik flight. With captions explaining the situation as it unfolds.

Besides the friendly fire incidents, which probably would have gotten me shot on return to base, we did a pretty good job! Successfully destroyed enemy tanks and cleared the way for our armor, and we had enough ordnance to attack the enemy camp on the other side of the city. I learned a lot about leading an Il-2 flight, that's for sure- next week we'll try to get everyone home!

https://youtu.be/5hSq0coEKMA

Yeah, that is an awesome video. Some of the Il-2 pilots in your flight are damn good with rockets too!

Anyway, I remember screaming in the radio that the IL-2's were attackikg friendly tanks. Luckily it was only one pass and it stopped as soon as it was noticed. But no worries, I lead an entire LaGG flight on an armed recon three weeks ago. We were told to clear the path for our tanks. So when we arrived on target we started destroying everything in the path of our tanks. Thought it unusual when we took no enemy fire, realized our mistake when the guns started shooting at the LW guys... Felt pretty stupid. I'm sure no amount of "sorry" would have made our ground troops happy after that, I mean, we were damn accurate on our attacks. Despite our mistake, our friendly troops on the ground never opened up on us.

Nice seeing the LaGG's in that video too. I know the video doesn't give a sense of the coordination, but we had lots on that mission.

The immersion of the mission and playing with live people was just immeasurable.  There is nothing like actual tactics and teamwork.

Glad you guys liked the vid. We really had some great coordination on the VVS side. Both during the initial Pe-2 run and the second close air support run in the video. I'm glad you enjoyed it RedBravo, and hope you keep flying with us!

I'm not sure if it's Tip or who makes these missions, but the way we led those tanks to that Novomaksimovsky was totally awesome. Unlike anything I've done before- the only thing that could have added to the immersion would have been a ground commander on comms with us! (And that could've prevented the friendly fire as well).

I know mistakes happen, but I'm still kicking myself over that incident with the T-34s. Even if those tanks were the targets, the ridiculous right turn I pulled totally goofed our formation and I nearly collided with my wingman, the track later revealed. So a lesson in patience and communication was learned there, that's for sure!

Hey Manu-

Just a heads up, I think InWar is 2-5pm EDT this Saturday. Which would conflict with our usual 3pm EDT time. I'm not sure if you care but I just wanted to mention it! (I will definitely fly SNBF over InWar myself, but I don't know about the rest, or if that will cut into our European participation).

I'm not sure what a good solution is, since 11am is a bit early and 5 or 6pm is basically the same time as last week- so maybe we just leave it and hope for good participation. I leave the hard decisions to you! Just reporting in  :salute:

Ha! Yes I can try. Sign me up for Il-2, but I will likely fly both the Il-2 mission and the Pe-2 mission.

Too bad the real Il-2 pilots didn't get second chances...

For Pe-2s we can hit the secondary objective we skipped last week if we want to change things up. Not sure if there's an Il-2 secondary but we will see.

Yeah that's probably fine. SNBF and FNBF both existed before InWar, so really InWar should change times if anyone changes time, in my opinion.

Another great day to fly, Thanks to Manu and all the pilots!

Hauggy and I took a pair of 88s to bomb Novomak, but my game crashed midway.  Hauggy had a great set of bomb attacks and destroyed a lot of targets, then made it safely back to base.

I restarted with a 110 and also hit Novomak, before doing some heavy gardening before meeting earth.

Our second sortie took a pair of 88s to hit the Kumovka AB, and we were just 30 seconds too late to catch a trio of planes taking off (fickle fate indeed).  We dumped some bombs and got a few targets, but I think we were both taken out by flak.

Not too bad overall with 2 pilots, one from France and the other in Alaska!!  Talk about long distance coordination!

Thanks everyone.

Had a fun time with the Pe-2 and IL-2 flights and a first rate hoot dogfighting in the I-16 with two others vs. some Bf109s.

Thanks again to Manu, Tx_Tip, and Coconut for making the event possible.

First sortie with Pe2s: went well except for a weird incident on the way back, where one of the planes lost one engine inexplicably. Looking at the replay, I think it was a lag issue. Two planes probably came too close together, even though it might not have been visible on the players' respective screens.

post-31381-0-22589000-1462096783_thumb.jpgpost-31381-0-97217000-1462096789_thumb.jpg

The next sortie was in an IL-2. I saw nothing during the game, but it turns out we took off just before a bomber attack. The AAA made short work of them anyway.

We did our best to kill ground targets, which we did with some extent. Sadly, I think none of the 3 IL-2s made it back home, but I took out a tank seconds before ditching my plane. The two aggressors who put holes in my plane had a touch travel back it seems, as my gunner was credited with two destroyed planes.

The last sortie was in I16s. The uncatchable little bastards kept the Germans and their rocket planes boom and zoom until their fuel tanks were emptied, at which point they fled the battlefield, letting the Russians invite themselves to the little garden party the Wehrmacht had set up in Novomaksimovsky.

Awesome vids coconut! I can't believe how oblivious we were to that bombing attack right after we took off!
