=621=Samikatz Posted April 19, 2019 Posted April 19, 2019 I don't think anyone would be hurt by making the sim more appealing to more people. Grey icons would be a nice aid for the visually impaired or VR users without getting rid of having to ID targets and such Of course what would really be nice would be BMS-style smart scaling but implementing something like that isn't trivial

I played on servers with icons in 1946, so i understand that the way icons are now in game is realy bad and has a lot room for improvments, but why would they waist time on that when there is so small customer base for it. Because they already improved it once and adopted some of my original suggestions three years ago. The suggested improvements are relatively simple and and would improve the experience for a segment of their audience. If the argument is that a minority (Normal) has no bearing on the game, then online players (with or without icons) should have no voice whatsoever. Relative hundreds (online) vs tens of thousands (SP). That is the general argument you are making, yes? BTW, I didn’t revive this thread and if you read it all, I’ve conceded some points earlier for ease of implementation. The game should improve for all segments of the community. It doesn’t have to be equitable and it definitely shouldn’t be catered to only the loudest voices. It is what ruined CLOD and almost killed this one as well. Minor improvements within the framework of workload and overall vision where they are able to squeeze them in help form cohesion amongst this disparate rabble. =LD=Stache Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 I for one would aplaude a :"friendly icon only and at limited range" setting in multiplayer , it would greatly improve squad cohesion while taking nothing away from the opponent!. the fact that you can only choose all icons on or off kinda limits the possibilities for experimenting with them and comming up with a good balance (and i don't like the icons on severs),and no, even the best monitors and VR sets cannot compare to the human eye. 1

Well it would help IFF the enemy as they wouldn’t have an icon on them. It would take away the need to visually ID friend and foe.
453=Kinninmont Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 It wouldn't take much effort for the IL2 team to give the players/servers more options regarding icons. As someone mentioned previously, 1946 had the perfect set of options. I think the problem is a few settings are linked together when they look like they should be separate. Ideally, I would like to see this: 1. Have plane icons separate to object icons on the map. Why is it either both or nothing? Have it so you can have plane navigation on and plane icons on. Currently, if you have plane icons off, your plane icon, for navigation is immediately off. These are 2 separate things and 1946 you had this option. Map objective icons is fundamentally different from plane icons. I don't see why these are the same thing. 2. Icon types. Seeing the player name and plane type is a bit extreme. There are some icon mods that just identify the plane icons as red or blue dots. We should have the option to do this as well. It can't be that much work surely. 3.Padlock linked with External Views. Right now, padlock is linked to external views. If you have external views, you can padlock. If you have external views off and padlock on, padlock don't work. I don't use padlock but a lot of ppl do use it. These are 2 separate options in the server setup section. They shouldn't be linked as they are currently. Those are 2 separate options. You should be able to use padlock but lock it to cockpit view. My main issue is, if some of these changes are done, the game can appeal to newer players that want to jump into more realistic settings. Personally, I fly realistic and on easier settings for combat training. However, the way the options are setup, its either 'War Thunder' type of settings or full realism. The options with icons and the other mentioned settings should be more flexible to allow hybrid settings so ppl from both the realistic crowd and the arcade crowd can meet halfway so to speak. Right now, the options are bugged. They are linked to another option and not being read as 2 separate options. This isn't much to ask for. It would significantly improve the player base and the transition of players from easier settings to harder ones. Ultimately, this thing we all love isn't easy. Its damn hard and it takes practice and dedication to not die much less get kills. To grow the community, we need more flexibility in the optins. The only reason it appears that most of the servers that have the most number of players is the one with realism settings i.e. Finnish, WoL, Combat Box, Berloga is because most of the core players in IL2 are the older more experienced crowd. Generally, newer players jump on the realistic servers, get shot down and don't play anymore. However, recently a few easier servers have been getting numbers eg. Air Attack. They generally get about 30 players when its night time for the US. That server has easier settings. My main argument is make the options a bit more flexible and you will just increase the player base especially from other games like War Thunder which this game is way superior too. Anyway, my 2 cents
=1stROF=stevie Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 this. yes - more settings. Allthough i like realism, i also like to know who i'm flying with, giving 6 calls etc.. Without icons well, thats hard to with strangers. Allthough no-icon for the enemy helps identifying, i don't see that as a problem at all. Allow them to appear around different ranges and altitudes. This will open up a whole can of players who don't like full realism to start with, and don't get the experience they might enjoy from the start.
