Developer Diary, Part 110 - Discussion

I hope the developers adjust their effects textures soon. When a bullet or shell strikes the earth it does Not create a jet black fountain of dust. Amid the high quality of the rest of the new landscape this looks very unrealistic.

I have mixed feelings about tanks.  Sure, it looks fun but a lot will depend on the level of detail.  Will the tanks/PAKs/Flak etc be modeled with the same level of care as the aircraft?  Will the physics be done correctly, will the munitions be modeled correctly etc?  If they are then that would be really cool but if they aren't, then the 'vibe' around the whole simulation will suffer.  In short, it will be just become another FPS but in this case with okay rather than cutting edge graphics.  And if the ground war is done correctly, how would that be possible without diverting resources away from the air war?

I like the idea of a few player tanks being added. We have ArmA for an infantry focus with some tanks/choppers/attackers tossed in for a combined arms feel. Doing it the other way around with an aircraft focused game throwing in a few playable tanks for a combined arms feel could be a lot of fun. And it's worth noting DCS did this years ago. It's largely a forgotten feature, but it is there.

A question to 109 pilots, is it just me or the Emil is noticeably more 'wobbly' than the Friedrich? I don't mean this in a bad way - considering how slippery the I-16 is I can only believe this malleability plus the added roll rate will help a lot.

Spasiba!

Love the summer map, any more detail on that and you can do a Farm Sim.

I have a hunch that the devs know more about the development of their own game than any single one of us, and when they say that this technology has been ready for ages it's because it was, and when they say the development of the flight aspect of the sims will be unaffected, it's because it won't. But again, what do they know

good argument. but i guess this level of discourse is to be expected from someone who doesn't understand that budget, resources, time, etc are finite, and any work focused on the ground game will implicitly be at the cost of the air game.

Trust me if there is ANYTHING I understand it's the above. I do it for a living. The reason he is wrong comes from about 9 to 10 official statements ( 1 even came from this thread) about how it's not affecting aircraft development.

I just get tired quoting other posts rather than have the other posters actually READ the thread before spouting their obvious knowledge of the inner workings of 1CGS.

So the answer still remains.

Wrong.

I have no worries about bringing in tanks, it will add some good dynamic gameplay possibilities. Not sure if this is the time I would add them though. There's so many other issues I would have tackled, but hey maybe this was the best time to do this for them.

Nor do I think that chris roberts is going to pull it off. But we as gamers need more than the last 10 years of gaming. If the Dev's focus in the core of IL2 as a flight sim and keep perfecting the FM and all aspects of the game then we are in for a treat.

Currently im even bored with IL2. So we need to move forward.

You guys need to watch the most recent live stream from citizen con. It shows it all neatly coming together.

Jason, thanks for the info, I must have missed it. So Tanks are just a fun extra that takes no Dev power away from aircrafts at all (my only concern). In that case, it's beyond cool! It will be fun to drop a bomb on a vehicle that's manned by another human, not just an AI ground unit. Hopefully it will bring more people = more money.

Han is getting better and better at display flying, and the cockpit of that E-7 is looks amazing. Perhaps it's the summer map, but cockpit lights are contrasty and crisp, exactly what I was missing from the snowy world of BoS. I really can't wait!

I'm rather impressed.

Just fantastic.

Very good news!

It won't, sad to say I bought into it.

Although I happily bought into E:D - and it is pretty fantastic, and looking forward to No Man's Sky which may be released soon.

But, yeah, SC... sounds like a lot of promises and grandeur that will fail to deliver like something else in the early WWII air combat genre.

Very interested in the varying surfaces. I won't get my hopes up, so I'll wait for the announcement on what that exactly encompasses.

Really, hmm; I keep close watch on this and they have delivered at every goal mark so far. I think some ones been watching Derek Smart commercialism to much. and if I may; well don't mind if I do; RSI and its backers help fix Star Cry and its bugs, the only thing I'm really waiting on, is the inputs to be fined tuned.

Multi crew ships are already out in the 1.3PTU, and crew-able at the same time, same space, and even DCS can't hold to that; and they ( E.D DCS) have been at it over 7 years, and Star Citizen only 3 years.. what does that say.

This!

Talking about Star Citizen diverts valuable resources away from what we should be doing in this thread, namely complaining yet again about the stupid devs. Doesn't anyone understand there's only a finite amount of righteous indignation available, and we need to shovel all of it at these incompetent clowns.

[sets Sarcasometer back to 'off']

I dunno. Just when I thought I couldn't be surprised at the astonishing shapes some of my fellow simmers throw, begrudgers are complaining about a little extra that looks a) awesome and b) fun. Sheesh.

Surely a case of "Love the sim: hate the simmer"?  Boom-tish!

guys, planes are my first love (probably same with you all) but we need to be realistic in expectations....there is much more tank lovers than plane lovers and doing tank sim would bring up the sales...yes, I know, its a horror for us (in some way) but its the sad truth...However, I hope they will keep making planes sims....I really do cause, otherwise I will freaak out haha

Thanks for the great update!

The summer map will be great, it looks amazing!

Love the tanks too; it will make it possible to have more interesting MP scenario's, both on ground and in the air. Now we can have a real objective like " take that town". When running into fortified positions or enemy ground forces, air support will be called in. Fighters will have to cover the attack planes.... Sounds familiar? :)

Suppose one way of looking at this idea is:You can't put all your eggs in the one basket so to speak. I think the Tank idea has the potential of encouraging more interest to multiplayer, or even this titles IL-2 becoming more of a highlight in game?: Who knows, but I think it's a great idea. For the pilots, think of the unpredictable ground targets advancing to complete their mission goals.. Certainly has the potential to add priority as to which pvp target to tackle first. Broader choice in game play! All I see are positives here!

Same here.  The tank video was very cool but Han's flying in the E7 - wow!  Nice landing and the cockpit and the map.  The Map!!!!!

So are we going to be able to Flak, our enemies yet?

Or use the tank to shoot enemy planes out of the sky. :hunter:

It still just makes me SMH that after all this time some folks still do not get that these guys have a plan... and it is their plan and they are working a part of it on the fly (pun intended) ...  Even IF tanks are introduced as an option... the fact that this would still be a great flight sim at it's core takes nothing from that. The more options the better.

Agreed .... It's almost like some think that the dev's are, dare I say it, flying by the seat of their pants ...

If 777/Devs can put a good tanks simulator inside the Il2 BoS virtual World...with a good management system (engine, systems,  physics, damage model, ballistic...etc..), I think that they will take a good number of new users. And for the flight sim users, I think, should be good news. If people don't want tanks, don't take, it's easy.
But in any case I'm sure that this is only one example of the possibility of IL2 BoS engine, no more.

Agree Sudoku .... heck if you recall my post in ATAG forums LONG ago, I was skeptical about usable vehicles in a "Flight Simulation". No more. From what I saw in the teaser video they have gone to a lot to maintain detail. Two thumbs up ...

Great update. 109E7 looks great dispite it having one of my least favorite Emil paint schemes..... but that's just my personal preference. :)

Looking forward to killing T34s in my Panzer IV. ;)

Where can I preorder the tanks?

Love the "total war sim" direction the devs are taking.

All good news.

No announcement for the moment. On the Russian forum, the devs said they would give more info about tanks once 1.104 is released.

Yeah, I really think people are underestimating how fun it's going to be to smash tanks filled with real players.

I'm just glad they said it's not deterring the aircraft development. One thing I would worry about, is someone from WT coming in for the tanks, complaining about being penetrated in one shot and go on to give this game a bad review.

Tanks would make a great addition to the sim!

Now if we could just get a true 24/7 multiplayer online campaign server that supports 100 aircraft in they sky at a time (ie. Cliffs of Dover - Storm of War) !

Keep up the good work...

Making some or initial tanks free-to-play (ala ROF's Spad and Albie) could be a great way to bring some tankers into our world, who may then get the flying bug.
