Detection of airborne targets is directly related to the combat effectiveness of the fighter/strike mission. This monograph, the product of a coordinated effort between the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory (NAMRL) and the Navy Fighter Weapons School (NFWS), TopGun, covers the basics required to optimize visual search in combat. The document is intended as an instructional aid to aircrew of tactical aircraft, especially those involved in aerial combat. The following four topics are discussed in this monograph: (a) sensors: means of detection; (b) equipment: obstructions to visions; © detection: the eye as a sensor; and (d) search: using the sensor.
