So you keep saying Luke. 🙂

The truth of the matter is that good AI developers are in very high demand. We're hardly the first wargame developer out there who's had a hard time securing someone to do AI work for them, so if you think we've not been trying to find someone you are greatly mistaken. 🙂

This is going to sound really bad, but I mean this in the most polite way. They, 1C management, should try harder and honestly someone should have already been training and working to become a master at AI programing with this engine already. It has been since what, 2013 or was it earlier when 777 released this engine with ROF? I know the engine has changed A LOT over the years, but honestly that is no excuse for the, I'm being polite again here, mediocre state that the AI is in right now. I have bought everything 777 & 1C have made in these flight sims, no they don't owe me anything, but I have always been disappointed in the lack of effort that the crew have made to make the AI a premium feature of each of these sims. I am not saying they have made no effort and I appreciate some of the improvements that have been made, but the AI still is not a premium feature of any of these flight sims. Korea is a brand new opportunity to once again showcase Single Player by finally bringing an AI experience that is worthy of the rest of the great features that I have already seen that the team is bringing to the new release. Korea is "take it or leave it" for me. I have some interest as I love the advent of both piston planes and the jets, Love the mig15, but bring a sub par AI to the release and I'll be waiting for years to buy it at a rock bottom low sale price. Bring an 'A" game to the AI with the release of IL2 Korea and I will buy it month 1 after I see proof in the pudding. Sorry to say but sub par AI is a game breaker for me. i don't even want to talk about the Pacific because a sub par AI performance in that theater will really suck hind tit even worse. I have plenty of sims from 1C with pretty features and even in depth Historical content and pilot careers, but they also bring a very WEAK AI performance and for me at least, as a single player, this still disappoints me. Again, my 2 cents for what it is worth. Love you Luke, but I am tired of excuses from the producers and the team also. Might I add, your doing a mighty fine job on the forums here. Please don't ban me? :P

Blade, I'm no archivist for the team, but from what I understand, back in the ROF days, we did have a person whose job was programming the AI. That person eventually left the company for whatever reason, and since then, yes, the AI is what it is. If it were that easy to train up someone to do AI, it would have been done a long time ago. Again, not making excuses for anything - I wish it were better too - but finding someone who is good at this sort of thing and is willing to forgo a larger financial payout is a difficult task. That's just reality. The AI will not be the same in Korea; things are being done to improve it, that much I can say. But it's certainly not just something where you can just "train someone up" and in 6-12 months' time they are suddenly fixing all the AI complaints people have.

I look forward to the Korea blog update on this subject for all the details. Bring it Luke. Use your influence. 🙂

I guess we get so blinded by our desires and ideas for a better IL-2 Great Battles when at the end of the day there is only so much the development team can do. Yes, I would like better AI controlled planes in the game, but I respect that there is only so much they can do.

With all the problems mentioned, Il-2's AI is still among the more believable examples present nowadays.

Sure, it doesn't always make the most rational decisions like a virtual pilot with 20 years of experience would, but it gives off enough of behavioural patterns reminiscent of what we can see in gun camera footages and whatnot.

I think the main field where AI's piloting "feels" lacking is the 1v1 duel mode, where there's literally nothing else besides 2 aircraft.

(Still, I'd love to see the lack of voice communication addressed, since it's easier than programming new behaviour from scratch)

I'm just going to say this and then leave it alone. Battle of Stalingrad was released in 2013. If 1C had prioritized AI development even to the level they developed Multiplayer optimizations then the AI wouldn't still be in the mediocre state that it is in.

For some reason Devs never take AI seriously and never position it within let's say the top 5 priorities of their overall game development goals. At the same rate Combat Flight Simmers continue to buy these sims in spite of lackluster AI development. Unfortunately flight simmers are at the Combat Flight Sim developer's mercy, so what choice do I or we have if we really want to play Combat Flight Sims? It really kind of sucks because if just one Dev team would create challenging, intelligent and some common sense in the AI logic, then their AI would be the best and their sales would increase exponetially. As a positive result for the customers who buy CBFS, all other Combat Flight Sim devs would have to step up their AI as well or lose any market share they might have.

I would think it would be embarrassing to proclaim your love of developing a product such as a Combat Flight Sim, and then producing and releasing a half way job on one of the critical areas of that product. Maybe that is just me though.

Honestly, I think IL-2 Great Battles needs a major overhaul in it's AI and command menu, but I don't think it's going to come. LukeFF has made it very clear that this overheaul we all want is not going to happen.

That's not quite true. I'm sorry Jack, I'm gonna have to pull you up on that erroneous statement. 1C are trying to find a suitable AI guy/team but it's very hard, despite their best efforts. Then it shall be done. We must be patient. Sure, some of us may be dead, but ---- happens.

That said, I'm looking forward to the upcoming FC game update with the Zeppelin. 🙂

No, please Trooper, please don't go there. Skynet is already just around the corner, let's not push it along through IL2 AI development.

About the AI behaviour, at least it would be nice that they could shoot you down when you flight on the deck. I know their minimum altitude is too high because before they crashed very often in the hills, but now is too easy to escape AI just flying really low. I try not to do it, but when the game allows you that, it is very difficult not using that kind of cheats. 😅

Perhaps lowering a bit that minimum altitude would give some results without increasing too much the number of accidents of the AI. And I think that's an easy thing to do (perhaps I'm wrong). Now they almost never have accidents.

The AI really does need improvement. But I won't say anymore as this is for another thread, and because they this is pointless to talk about because they probably don't have any plans to do so.
