Drag would be an issue though

 

Drag is obviously not an issue for the I-16. Otherwise they would have given it a differently shaped nose  I think Polikarpov invented a special paint, when he designed the I-15, which made the surface of the airframe completely frictionless. There were issues however, when pilots tried to climb into the cockpit, and belly landings were strongly discouraged
