A simple question to &&& & third party mission & campaign developers( pictures included.)

Recommended Posts

This is not a rant against BoS or the upcoming BoM.In may ways the devlopers have given us a beautifully rendered "game board" with some very nifty large & small touches. They have shown a continuing commitment to improving the look & feel of the sim. Commendable!

Neither is this a ringing endorsement of CloD. I do not want to step on that hand grenade either, but having said that the good people who have contributed to ATAG have done much to iron out the very rough edges on a sim that was released nearly still- born..

So my question is this.Is it possible through the BoS game engine (or what-ever )to have game play in either single player missions or SP Campaign ( assuming more are coming with new maps & BoM...) that might resemble the average missions in CloD:

By that i mean larger formations of bombers that behave like formations of bombers that we can view from their starting point & follow ( should we wish to,all the way to & from their objective.) Also: their escorts do their jobs ( also in realtive numbers to the bombers...) they strive to protect or clear the way for their charges.)

I could show a ton of images of average missions from either side in which there are tens of aircraft in the air at the same time going to different places on the channel map & doing so in intelligent rational ways. As a British defender I can try to figure out which formation  I should challenge. As a German I can try to defeat a rolling defense. Its not perfect ( the deficiencies in RT ,wingmen & squadron mates drives me a little crazy) but it is a fun challenge in  each mission because each mission is different & each mission has widely varying numbers of aircraft. As an Italian I might choose to stay home.

Are we ever going to get something like this? Admittedly CloD started with two very simple short campaigns , but in my opinion both were more involving than the medal/skin arcade in BoS ( ok ok we won't go down that road again..)but now CloD has many ( at last count about 10-20 campaigns ( counting Disastersofts pay to play campaigns ) and more single missions than I can count and if you care to switch sides and/or planes for each mission then your variety of choices expands expotentially. It is literally mind boggling. They ( ATAG third party)too are working in new maps & promise new aircraft and with them more missions more involving than what we have seen here thus far.

So please throw me a bone as you can see I am aboard for BoM ...let me know there are sunlit highlands ahead...

Play Veteren Campaign, quite a lot of Bombers to shoot down there!

As far as I can tell from my experience as a mission builder all this is possible with the BoS FMB. The number of planes in a mission will of course depend on your system. My PC has only the games minimum requirements so I usually have to limit the number of planes that are active at the same time to not more than 20 in my own missions, but I guess people with up-to-date systems can certainly have missions with much higher plane numbers.

That does show the promise of the sim.It is beautifully presented with nice touches  but presents a limited flight plan: a long must-be-flown trip to the same part of the front time after time ,at least on the 4 missions I have flown... :salute:

Well that's what you will get with a historical representation of small piece in time from a battle :) early days yet I am sure there will be many campaigns catering to all tastes in time

The AI in CLoD is just abominably bad. The enemy aircraft either all attack one aircraft or dumbly fly along strait and level until they're shot down. The bomber formations look good until you start shooting at them then they start this weird porpoising maneuver. Either way single player in CLoD is just not a fun experience for me.  I don't know how you could praise the original Spitfire Girl (remember her?) campaign, that was the worst thing in the history of flight sims.

Apart from the frustrating AI (they always all seem to attack one and only one opponent), in our last CloD coop-style squadron mission a couple of days ago we had three crash-to-desktops out of (I think) 8 players? [i might be misremembering slightly]. The mission builder's crime? He tried to use some clouds (i.e. light overcast).

As our mission builders learn the BoS ME and start to gently lean against the limitations, we're finding we can very comfortably player with - what - twenty-ish AI opponents in the same area. You need a certain amount of judicious spawning and despawning (activating and deactivating, to use the language) but you can make missions (coop-style missions I mean) feel very busy and very alive.

I don't think BoS'll do massed AI bomber attacks however (like in your fourth picture). :(  Perhaps in future iterations. But good luck with the CloD gunner AI! :P

At the moment our squadron is sort of treading water while our mission builders prepare our first BoS campaign and we build up a reasonable library of training missions.

After posting I stumbled across this:

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/forum/92-mission-making-and-mission-editor/

A good beginning with some interesting new 3rd party missions to be found there...nice work!

( sad if we don't see mass bomber formations1 It is pretty cool to see 20-30 Ju-87B's in CloD.It would be even better to see the same number of Dora's here!)

The work done so far by 3rd party mission builders certainly shows the potential of BoS and its FMB much better than the few simple single missions that came with the game. I really wonder if the developers don't have a dedicated mission builder in their team.

Maybe it would be a good idea to let some of the talented mission builders from the community do the missions for BoM.
