Developer Diary, Part 34

The skin itself looks very nice but...this skin is NOT the one users have ACTUALLY choosen.

I (and certainly many other founders) have voted for this skin because the original tag "From dev to founders" (or something like that) sounded quite nicely and reminded historical tags on planes that had been ofered to the VVS by workers or paysants.

Changing for a basic "Tovarich" is a TRUE desapointment because it spoils the skins of its orginal purpose.

I really feel cheated and I really hope the the skin will recover its orginal tag.

Thanks in advance.

I also think that a more weathered skin shall be appreciated.

I agree with Zargos on this one. The original wording should be preserved. It made sense and had historical roots.

UF_Zargos. Now that's a name that I didn't see in a long time. It brings back lots of good memories, working with your IAR-80 template.

On the Russian board, the "Founders" are called "Comrades", that's why it's been put on the skin.

All right, but why didn't you write the full messagge "From dev's to comrades".

I really don't undrerstand.

As far as I know, I didn't notice on the related thread that someone had ever asked to change the original message.

Could explain why you've choose to change ?

Very informative news for the skinners. Thanks!

Precise and detailed multi-layered template, probably 2048x2048 pixels, looking easier to work on than in RoF.

I liked the way the template had 3d depth, reminded me of a plastic model kit on its sprue, one of my earliest passions involving aircraft.

Well, I contributed sooner than will future customers. As a matter of finance it makes a difference, but, as a matter of IL2 BOS fandom, I don't think that it matters so much. Some persons could order sooner and did so, some persons will order later, for one reason or another reason. I understood my pre- order as allowing me to enjoy certain things sooner than the non pre- order community, but not that I would enjoy things that would not ultimately be made available to all customers. Everything I enjoy during the pre-order period is ultimately going to be enjoyed by all community members or at least offered to community members. Frankly, if this, "Comrade," skin is ultimately made available to all the IL2 BOS community, upon general release, as a thank you from the team to the entire IL2 BOS community, I will be very pleased.  :salute: MJ

Just a thought but didn't most vehicles have slit covers on lights to project the beam in a narrow slit ahead of the vehicle and to stop the light radiating in every direction ?

The Lagg-3 seems to be quite dangerous, to the pilot that is lol. Lovely video, and yes it reminded me of ROF, but that's a good thing. As someone mentioned earlier, lowering the brightness of the stars during moonlight would be a good thing, without moonlight they should be really bright in absence of light/atmospheric pollution.

Reflections on the snow and compacted snow (white ice) on the runway are great, similar to what I see in Canada.

Very realistic. A great simulation is not just a good FM and DM but small detail like that.

It make it real.

There is also a lot of hype about Oculus Rift, I will surely buy these if not too expensive.

Thank you and continue the good work.

Love the skin! I think the short "Comrade" looks way better than the original more verbous statement.

I loved the skinning! In an earøier thread Jason said the templates will be released. The skinfile looks nice and tidy with beautifull overvirew, I can't wait to give it a go!

Agree - didn't  vote for this skin because too much text didn't look good imo. But the single words looks real good now.

Will the enemy gunners/fughters see me and be able to e.g. turn fight in the darkest night? Same goes for poor weather. Any info on that?

It's just like in ROF and as Loft explains in the video. Unless enemy aircraft can actually see you as the result of a light source (searchlights, cockpit lights, flares), they are oblivious to your presence.

Fabolous nighttime effects. I like the skin, but I think the "Tovaritch" is too obviously made with a computer-age typeface. The letters are too perfect and too perfectly spaced. The skin should have a more handpainted look to be absolutely superb.

Great update, thank you for all the hard work and taking us through some of your design concepts.

'Yellow snow'....I understand the context but when I read 'yellow snow' in the subtitles I just about spit my coffee all over my screen.

Just finished watching the live stream, I hope to see what night is like with a smaller moon, even with the Gibbous that was shown it was quite bright, I wonder how it will be with little or no moon... Also, does anyone else think that having all the tanks drive about with their barrels pointed up like they are on parade looks funny? I would think (and feel it would look more natural) if they were all pointed forward/level... Otherwise, it's coming along excellently.

As an amateur astronomer i could say few words about the night sky. The ground/sky illumination by moon is super realistic, based on what i have seen on winter nights, brightness is just correct. However the moon should be lot smaller. The star brightness is just correct for area with no light pollution, please not try to "fix" it. It also seems that the constellation of orion is missing it's bright upper left corner star betelgeuse.

Ah, the black art of skinning uncovered!

Since the skin took just over two and a half minutes make.

There should be no reason why you can't whip up number 4 for us today as well!  :P

Thanks,

I know that... But having the guns at full elevation like that does not look right for a cross-country road march or especially when going cross country in a combat formation like was seen with some of the footage..

I liked the layout of the template. It's very similar to what we've had in IL-2. One request though in regards to the templates and skins to be used in BoS. So many in IL-2 were not lined up correctly. A good number had panel lines that were slightly lower on the right side of the fuselage compared to the left. Most had panel lines that were mismatched when the various parts were put together ingame. Even some of the really excellent user made skins and templates suffered the same flaws. It was an easy fix that never was made. I'm hoping the new sim will have a little more attention paid to this. It makes for a better visual appeal, IMO.

For the skin's Lagg-3, I find that the skin does not look like the original image.

No signature To Founders from Devs is visible on the screens:

post-7693-0-39506400-1380288353.jpg

Is this the final product?

Regards

I too was a bit disappointed that the actual plane doesn't match the image that we were voting for.

The skin with the slogan took my vote as I liked the idea of having a slogan on the side of the plane. The the actual skinned plane doesn't look as special as the proposed image & now, with just one word, looks like a run of the mill plane rather than having something that bit special.

The night video is amazing & a lot of work is goining into this sim - whilst my system runs RoF, I'm begining to wonder wheather it's upto the task of BoS.

Nice video!

I like the coment about the Oculus Rift wearn as a rear gunner. Cant wait to experiance the feeling of horror as a rear gunner in the Il2 myself!! (As weird as that sounds...)

Couple of questions about the skinning video:

Although we can see the skin being painted, will the team release a template for skinners including bump maps, specular maps, UV Layer and other layers (markings, weathering, colouring, rivets, etc, etc) ?

Secondly, what software did you use to capture the skinning process? The main screen capture software I know of is Camtasia, is this what was used?

Oh and one more question. Have the team been able to make the skins without having any mirrored sections in the UV mapping?

One of the big problems when making historical skins in the original IL2 was that the UV maps sometimes re-used part of the texture map for another part of the aircraft. One of the worst affected was the P-38 that couldn't be historically skinned due to one side of the aircraft where it was mirrored from the other (so reused and anything placed on it showed up the wrong way round/ numbers looked like you were viewing them in a mirror).

Has this been addressed, looked at with the current models you are using so that text and numbers will not suffer from this?

Just asking that it be considered when newer aircraft models are added, if it hasn't already been considered?

Cheers, MP

Hmmmm....I will be the bad guy today...I am really afraid from the SPEED of skin TOVARISHT creation...no rivets counting, no measurements...just painting...I remember the days when I was creating cockpit skins for the Fw-190 D9...I was doing them "pixel by pixel"....Now I see how BOS skin is manufactured...with SUCH scarry SPPEED... Are all rivets ON their places? Or...they just LOOK like there are but they are NOT...Scary movie is this scary, scary, scary...

I think you will find the video only showed one layer being edited, the base colour, the other layers representing panel lines and rivets were already there.

Having done many skins in RoF I can say that once you have a good layout to work from in the template it takes next to no time to crank out a skin. As standard the template is fine, but I customise them so they have their own layers for wings, cowlings, stabilisers, etc, as well as any extra layers I can add such as a generic weathering layer. To make a new skin all it takes is simple adjustments of those layers, unless of course I'm creating a completely new design on the airframe then it takes a little longer.

The template itself is layed out much better than RoF template because you can see the individual pieces of the airframe easier. In RoF it took some trial and error to figure out where a particular piece fitted in on the template.
