Volkoff Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) @ Jaws- I really love the new lighting, too. The trees, snow, ice, all looked wonderful. The airbase is very detailed and all of the vehicle traffic really helped to bring the base to life. From the cockpit, with the canopy open, I could really imagine that it was terribly cold out. The wind, ice, and snow really chill me to the bones. The various subtle sounds coming from the LaGG are wonderful. The LaGG itself is wonderful looking. The team really captures the LaGG's little attributes. For instance, the LaGG really does seem too heavy for the Klimov. While the LaGG is pretty fast, I get the sense that it accelerates about as poorly as a guaranteed varnished coffin should. I did get the sense of the LaGG being very solid, though. There are a lot of other things I really like to @Yaklover- Thanks for the heads up on the mixture and prop pitch controls. S! MJ Edited August 14, 2013 by MishaJames 2
FTC_Karaya Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) Interesting thing about the LaGG-3 is that it is one of the very few fighters that as time moved on actually became lighter rather than heavier. The Series 66 sure is an ok fighter for 1943 and probably gave the early La-5 and 5F a run for their money! Edited August 14, 2013 by JG52Karaya 1
Jaws2002 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) I was thinking about the same thing today, looking at yak-9U and yak-3 photos. The Russian aircraft, became more and more aerodynamic from upgrade to upgrade. When you look at the FW-190 and Bf-109 getting all kind of bumps, as the war went on, the Yaks and Laggs became more and more streamlined as the war progressed. Really impressive! J4SCrisZeri Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 ... ... Everything marvellous. Is it just me, or the shadows on the snow are a bit too light? I personally need a stronger contrast to properly feel the weight and "presence" of the plane in the scene. But again, wonderful stream, contents, gave me a positive feel about the future.

Not necessarily. From a photography perspective, light will be reflecting off pretty much everything as it is all snowy and white. This will have the effect of causing many light sources weakening the shadows and making them look much more "washed out" depending where the sun is in the sky. Even in late evening you won't get the same depth of shadow on snow that you would on, say, grass. Hood

Heywooood Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 except for the phantom wheel fairing shadow...that one is too dark - WiP I know SweetFX can help with contrast / gamma in most programs but darker shadows by default in BoS wouldn't be a bad thing...its just more of a personal taste item than something a developer can do to please everyone... the Live stream vid posted was helpful as I missed the event - thank you to the person who imbedded that I cannot wait another couple of months for this....

In the screenshot it looks like there's a very thin cloud coverage, which would in real life act as a massive diffuser hiding all shadows.

01Wingchaps Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 The screenshot above is a remarkable illustration of attention to detail. It really adds to immersion to see a cue like that, an aircraft with it's wing removed in maintenance/repair. Along with the trucks I saw in the video moving about the airfield, the atmosphere on the ground in this game will be impressive...
TJT Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Even though Twitch.tv are just that, twitchy, for me in their streams and as such i had a few pauses and hickups it was very very pleasing to see the sim in full screen and at a good resolution.

I really like what I have seen of the game so far, but for real immersion on the airfield I would like to see animated ground crew. I know it will not come with the initial release, but it will hopefully be a high priority add-on..

In the past immersion was something that could only happen in your own imagination, not on the computer screen.
HenFre Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 The meaning of that word "immersion" must have changed over time. In the past immersion was something that could only happen in your own imagination, not on the computer screen. Taken from Wikipedia: Immersion (virtual reality), the state of consciousness where an immersant's awareness of physical self is diminished or lost by being surrounded in an engrossing total environment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immersion
gavagai Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 As I said, in the past...Red Baron was immersive, but now we're not immersed unless we have an animated ground crew.
Laser Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 It's quite true, the more detailed the virtual reality gets, the more people expect to have implemented on top of it. I think it's quite a psychological factor: the better the virtual world manages to hook you in, the more and harder any small missing detail will throw you out. But the more you implement, the more such details exist, which makes the work harder and harder. I think this is not easy to see from "outside" 3d software programming, because one has around him/her a 100% implemented reality, all the time ... so many people seem to believe it's only "natural" to have it easily in the virtual world.

BraveSirRobin Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 As I said, in the past...Red Baron was immersive, but now we're not immersed unless we have an animated ground crew. It was only immersive in the sense that it was better than any other flight sim at the time. By today's standards it's not immersive at all.

Not to me. Part of what made the game so epic was the emotion it elicited. Skip to 5:30 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY5mDKmS_xk Remember that? Yeah, it's campy, but the ignominy of defeat is palpable there. Feeling nervous, elated, upset, vengeful; those emotions are all necessary for an immersive experience, imo. Anyway, the livestream of BoS looked very good to me, and I see opportunity to feel immersed.

Rodolphe Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 ... Does anybody on this board have some kind of information on this typical hexagonal tiles revetment ? ... Sharing some info on the Hexagonal Concrete Plates. The Soviet Union began building its first concrete airfield pavements in 1931-1932. These were constructed using unreinforced concrete hexagons 1.2-m (48-in.) long per side and 100- to 140-mm (4- to 5.5-in.) thick (6, 7). As aircraft became heavier, the hexagon length was increased to 1.5 m (60 in.) and thickness increased up to 220 mm (8.8 in.). These unreinforced hexagonal slabs often had problems with rocking and spalling, and as modern concrete placement equipment became available after 1950, rectangular, cast in-situ pavement slabs became more common. Alx Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 First post! I'm impressed they have done all of this using only DX9. I do wonder, however, if they are missing an opportunity in not updating to DX11. I suppose it's an enourmous amount of work, but from what I can gather from Arma3's develpment, moving to DX11 has provided a lot of extra lighting and particle effects that adds a lot of polish to the look of the game. Perhaps in they might join the 21st century in BoS v. 2 Don't get me wrong, I like the look of the game so far and am looking forward to it.

Uufflakke Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) Besides that snow might be too white, too less contrast or not I hope that the whole area is not just a 100% pristine white snow covered christmas map. At least closer to the battlefield I would like to see a mixture of snow and soil because of all the tanktracks, explosions and bomb craters. Or at other places the earth is visible because of human activity in villages, towns etc. @Alx, on 15 Aug 2013 - 21:16: When BoS becomes succesful they will consider DX11 (according the administrator Jason Williams). But then ARMA3 might suffer the same issue that CLOD did in that many people don't/can't update their systems and stick with the previous game. I think BOS might have played it smart in using older technology so that anyone can play it. Then when it becomes the norm to have the equivalent of today's top graphics cards upgrade to DX11 1

Jason_Williams Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Hi Jason, is there no way to incorporate SweetFX into BOS as a GFX option? No we're not going to do that. We give users some options to tweak their graphics, but the overall appearance is about the same. This makes sense for a lot of reasons including marketing etc. SweetFX and tools like it can radically change how a game looks and we'd rather leave it as a mod so our core product looks and acts as we originally intended for the vast majority of users. As a courtesy I had FlightFX built as a semi-official tool to manage sweetFX and I provide a safe settings file to make it easier or users to install and play with SweetFX. But that's as far as I want to take it. Jason
Dieter_Schlueter Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 They don't even want to give the number of pre ordered games. No way to know if or when the game will be considered as a succes Say that because i think BOS will be a very good game and i find it is very a pity this game won't have this feature at start
