Luger1969 Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Hi fellow pilots. Well I have also started flying russian aircraft and the pe 2 is fun and versatile in roles in my mind. Is there perhaps someone can do a skin for the forum. I have all the details please let me know by pm and I will send. It is a very heavily weathered and faded aircraft....a real unsung workhorse.
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 These are two skins I've worked on recently to amuse my squadmates. They are based on a fictional 'People's Republic...' The inscriptions need correcting due to my poor Russian language, but they effect is close to what I was hoping for. The feel of the historical... Will revisit them and fix the text when I get a chance. Any constructive criticism most welcome: 4
[I.B.]ViRUS Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 there was no Arial or Times New Roman, etc font in 1940-s, especially on planes). Try paint letters. Handmade everytime looks better machinery ones.

616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 ViRUS' timestamp='1429634166' post='254251'] there was no Arial or Times New Roman, etc font in 1940-s, especially on planes). Try paint letters. Handmade everytime looks better machinery ones. I quite agree mate - I have noticed many different styles of text on Soviet aircraft, ranginging from what looks like standard stencilled text and professional sign-writing to freehand written inscriptions. The problem is, my old brain's not as sensitive to the nuances of handwritten and historical Russian text. I read and write Russian like a 7 year old (and speak and comprehend Russian like a baby!) I think I may have to work a little harder to train my eye on this subject. If there are any sites out there which offer examples of historical Russian signage or writing styles, please post a link or PM me. I will definately give some time to it. Also, if there are any Russian fonts in an older style for non-historical use I'd be keen to track them down. All help most appreciated Regards, JR
361fundahl Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I just like how an unsuspecting fighter tries to go head on with this big bomber and you can light them up with the forward firing guns.
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I started work on this skin at the request of Chandalier1969 - based on an illustration at http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/b/265/1/0#20 . A scale modeller - Sergei Archakov (who's grandfather flew a Pe-2 during the GP War) posted his build project for the same aircraft at: http://www.archakov.com/models/pe-2.htm . Along with colour reference from: http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/pe2/pe2camo/pe2camo.htm I decided to make 3 skins from this information: 1: A Pe-2 with August 1943 factory standard markings - Pattern No.1 and 6 Red Stars 2: A Pe-2 in August 1943 factory standard markings with 3rd IAK identifiaction added - including white wingtips, additional upper-wing stars, 3rd IAK badge and yellow aircraft ID number 3: The same Pe-2 as above with winter white cammo overspray If anyone out there knows the alpha chanel value for 'reflective and transparent', please let me know. I can make 'holes' (RGB 0) where the extra side windows should be, but that's not really working so well. I'm close to finishing the project now but I still have a few things to do. When all 3 skins are finalised I'll post the download links in this forum. In the meantime, these are a couple of screenshots of the work in progress: As always, any and all constructive feedback welcome Regards, Johnny 6
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) I just like how an unsuspecting fighter tries to go head on with this big bomber and you can light them up with the forward firing guns. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing! In quick missions I often get one head-on in the first pass - once or twice I've taken two head-on that way. Edited May 8, 2015 by Johnny-Red
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 There is skin fo PE2 from 40th Bombardment regiment Blacksea fleet Love that skin - going to fly in it now Za Borisa Sofanova! Before I go though, I have to ask, is this historic or a squad skin? Either way I'm gonna fraps some of it in action... JR
KpgQuop Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Top notch skinning Johnny Red. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for BOM.
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Many thanks As for BoM - It's going to be tough to choose between the MiG-3 and P40 E. So much colour - so little time :D A lot depends on what skins the BoM will be released with: I first spotted the MiG-3 when I was a young lad - I remember thinking 'that thing's built for speed!' when I saw it's long engine and sporty lines. Later learned they were a handful to fly, undergunned that they and struggled low down, but the look of the beast always stayed with me... If they make a 'no canopy' mod option for the MiG-3 I'd love to do Pokyshkin's 'White 5' - 16. Gv.IAP - Green upper with a yellow spinner and yellow 'Gvardia' inscription on the nose - but I expect such an iconic subject may have many suitors As for the P40 E - I've seen some beautiful colour profiles on http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/lendlease/p-40/p-40.html - Tapani Tuomanen's illustrations are amazing - well worth a look. I especially like G V Gromov's 'White 70' 20 Gv.IAP - Green/Brown upper. For now though I'm trying to to find more sources for a Tiger / Shark-nosed LaGG-3. Along with the MiG-3, It's another unloved fighter, but that makes me want to do my best for it :D JR

Yankee_One Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Thank you Johnny for sharing and making some good skins for the PE2. This is mostly welcome. 1
Dutch2 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Thanks guys for the skins, this plane is my favorite plane
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 WIP Update: Using the Late 1943 Pe-2 pattern as interpreted at http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/pe2/pe2camo/pe2camo.htmI've put together a skin for Pe-2 Ekaterina Fedotova's 14/136. Based on the interpretations of previous skinners I've gone for a yellow outlined tactical number, though I'm aware of speculation to the contrary. Any and all constructive feedback welcome. Regards, JR 1
Dutch2 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Thanks, hope I can use this skin next weekend. This plane was flown by an all female crew, btw. Edited September 20, 2015 by Dutch2
Yankee_One Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Great choice. She is really beautiful Fantastic fob, like the swallow under the canopy.
616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Thanks, hope I can use this skin next weekend. This plane was flown by an all female crew, btw. The above WIP update was for Dutch2's eyes, as for some reason I couldn't get the screenie attached to a PM As he rightly states, 14/136 is Pe-2 n.89 of 125 GvBAP flown by Ekaterina Fedotova, with navigator Klara Dubkova and radio operator/gunner Antonina Khokhlova. I believe that all three aviators completed their combat tour using only this aircraft. If everything moves apace, I should be finished with it by the middle of this week Dutch Many thanks for helping get me started on this. The current swallow is a placeholder (and work of a more capable artist I must admit), so the skin will be finished when I've painted a new swallow, that way there's no complications with publishing it. In the meantime, If anyone has any thoughts on the cammo, speak up while there's still enough time for me to make adjustments. There is much debate on this aircraft's true colours, and even talk of there being more than one machine decorated with a swallow, or even that the machine was possibly repainted: Based on Massimo Tessitori's interpretation, I've gone for the late summer 1943 directive for metal skinned day bombers (like the one used on the 3rd IAK Pe-2 Skin). I find Tessitori's work on accurate cammo interpretation to be very good, but things aren't quite as clear cut as they could be: Firstly, the reference photos show very low contrast cammo colours, more like you'd expect to see in a blue-grey / dark-gey fighter scheme, and it is known that later Pe-2's also flew in these colours. Osprey (sometimes very good and sometimes wide of the mark) have published a colour plate of 14/136 with late summer 1943 fighter scheme (two-tone grey) with a pale blue swallow. Secondly, the tactical number (89) is the subject of more conjecture, with credible sources stating either a silver or yellow border. In addition to this, I've not seen any photographs of this aircraft where the spinners are visible, and have decided to base this element on the research of an original il-2 skin artist... Also, published photographs of 14/136 seem to show two different versions of the swallow; one with a white breast, and one which seems to be dark (blue?) all over. Both photographed swallows differ from the Osprey illustration in being darker overall than their cammo background... A man with a watch always knows the right time. A man with two watches never knows the right time! The more I learn, the less I know Regards, JR Edited September 21, 2015 by Johnny-Red

216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Beautiful skin, Stick! One quick question, maybe the bend in the arrow should be a teeny bit thicker (comparing it to the pic at least)?
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) I cropped and resized the B&W screenshot to give a better comparison for fuselage size. Very hard to get an exact perspective. There are may little things that are not spot on. Maybe someday I'll futz with it but for now it's close enough for Soviet government work. Edited February 12, 2016 by 12.OIAE_Stick-95
KOHTYP Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 PE-2 does not claim to historicity. You can download it here.To download only for those who have a sense of humor!
