SharpeXB Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 The developers did such a nice job on such a well detailed map. We should be encouraged to look at it. When you navigate by landmarks you get to know the map very well. Icons take away the enjoyment. I just keep then switched off.
avlSteve Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 The funny thing is that it's not even that hard on the Stalingrad map. As long as you know which side of the Volga you were on it's nearly impossible to get lost. I didn't know about the "i" key to get rid of the aircraft icon (and compass) until reading this thread. I have a joystick button mapped to toggle the HUD, but the aircraft icon persists on the map. To tell you the truth, I hadn't done real navigation since discovering the "o" key, and it sure is nice to get back into that aspect of the game. The map is so good it almost seems a waste to have it plot your position for you. I do like having close vicinity ground units identified for me though. I don't think I could identify them otherwise.
Potenz Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 The GPS and constantly updated and pin-point correct symbols for enemy targets is really annoying, aye. But so is the techno-chat telling you all these ridiculous details you should be forced to find out yourself, like continuous/climb/boosted mode and whatever. Someone made suggestion the other day for a third difficulty setting that has everything turned off, and I feel that that would be very much an improvement. Yes, you can turn off the aids with H, but I for one don't see why I should limit myself that way if the EXP reward is not increased. techno chat can be disable on the option menu, and the issue with the plane indicator in expert mode i changing with the updates, it was there a few patches ago, the gone again after some patch and came back again after the last few patches
Stolle Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Why not just hit the "I" key to turn off the icons?
wellenbrecher Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I know, I still feel it has no place in something called "Expert". Or if it was to stay like this there should be a no holes barred mode that gives, dunno, 2.5x or 3x EXP. I know about disabling them but like I said, as I dislike the campaign as is, I'm sure as hell not gonna make it more difficult - and thus by extension more time consuming - for me by taking away help without being rewarded for it. It's a means to an end after all, nothing more and nothing else. One of the often brought up reasons why this campaign is so great and useful is usually that it helps new players learn the game in some unfathomable, as of yet unexplained way. Which in conclusion should mean that there should be a fully manual mode as well, right?
FZG_Merlin Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Why not just hit the "I" key to turn off the icons? because when im flying multiplayer I want the enemy to struggle with the same navigaton challenges than I am. Makes a world of difference in squad play 3
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 There used to be normal light, normal and expert modes. They should bring back the light mode and adjust the three accordingly.
avlSteve Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) Why not just hit the "I" key to turn off the icons? Is there a way to identify ground units? I can set it up almost perfect now (for me) with HUD off, no ingame messages, and no aircraft icon, but then I have no clue who the ground units are until they shoot at me. Is that how you're supposed to tell who they are or can they actually be identified as friend or foe? Edited October 29, 2014 by avlSteve
wellenbrecher Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Not really applicable when flying the Ju-87 as a dive bomber or any level bomber, but when flying a Ground Support mission in an IL2 or a Ju-87 with pods, you can look for the tanks that are usually somewhere in front of the artillery lines. Other than that, find the AAA at the side of the line and see if they shoot you or not. Active reconnaissance! Apart from that, keeping in mind the overall state of the battle (f.e.: is Kalach German? If so, the defending forces with their backs to that city would be German as well) will give you hints as well.
Requiem Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Agree with the OP. Not just on the whole icon thing in expert but the fact that it renders the navigation equipment redundant. Maybe when the devs have fully developed the nav systems in-game we can expect these aids in expert to disappear. There used to be normal light, normal and expert modes. They should bring back the light mode and adjust the three accordingly. I thought normal light was the description used for a server with less objects on it compared to normal?

I thought normal light was the description used for a server with less objects on it compared to normal? My mistake then. I thought there were more aids as well. Then, I propose a beginner mode to get guys started - with all of the aids turned on, an adjustable server side as NORMAL and a true expert mode with all aids turned off. Potenz Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Asking for extra xp just for change an option in the menu it's quite silly, here you go, settings/flight interface and you will have this options like in the screen, choose what you want tip and tech-chat, tech chat, off.
avlSteve Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 but when flying a Ground Support mission in an IL2 or a Ju-87 with pods, you can look for the tanks that are usually somewhere in front of the artillery lines. Can't fly Ju-87 with pods on ground support... pods are only available on ground attack! Just flew a transport column attack with pods leaving the map icons off the entire flight, after completing the objective went back in for one last pass, took heading to exit point while climbing, and as I was getting my bearings I realized I was about to overfly an enemy airfield, took evasive too late, AAA killed me. Definitely the most immersive flight I've had. Done with grinding... will take my time on the Pe2 and He111. I'm actually kind of dreading getting to level 10, as I've been on level 9 for it seems like forever, and I don't usually have very many successful flights in a row any more. So yeah, it should be configurable in MP, because I won't be able leave them off in MP if they're available.

The tanks can be recognized by the turret placement. The Russian T-34 has it forward of center.

silent_one Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 this has got to be the winiest thread Ive ever bumped into. The maps spoiling your immersion. Dont use it. but its not what you want for yourself , its what you want for other people. You dont want it and you dont want anyone else to have it either! I think this is the route to madness. With servers so elitist a handful of people would want to play that way. 1
No601_Swallow Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Why don't you just turn the darned thing off? Such angst...

With servers so elitist a handful of people would want to play that way. Where's the whining? There's genuine and reasonable surprise and disappointment. Sure it can be turned off in single player but it's bollocks having it in Expert Mode in multiplayer where turning it off just puts you at a disadvantage. Manual navigation brings the game to life because you're engaged in the game all the time - no switching off while hitting time acceleration or going on autopilot. I'm happy to declare myself a "fanboy" of the game; I can live with the unlocks but this is plain nuts if it's going to be a standard part of Expert Mode. Genuine surprise and disappointment from me too unless it's temporary.
silent_one Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Where;s the whining. Have you actually read this thread. lol. If your talking about immersion then dont use it. But to demand others dont use it because of disadvantage is completely different. I you cant see enemy planes on it and its a nav tool to help layers fly around a rather featureless white map just whos getting hurt. I think its fine to play the game , and yes its a game . Your own way. But its naff to be try to force everyone who wants to play with a decent amount of realism to have to play your way. The more inaccessible people make this game. The fewer people will access it. Since 777 want to make money and have people play their game, hope they ignore this thread.
BlackDevil Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 And what is your argument against making it a server option ? There will be enough "accessible" servers for sure.

Exactly - people like to fly in different ways and on a level playing field. Having "radar" in a so-called Expert Mode is rubbish pure and simple. There has to be an option to turn it off, server-side for groups of players who like to fly that way, without wondering whether someone, friend or foe, is taking a peek at their radar map.

If people don't wont to learn how to navigate (alongside takeoff and landing the absolute basic of aviation), they just don't belong into expert server. For people just wanna have fun in a "game", therefore is the normal mode. But people who consider themselves "experts" just have to learn to navigate. Everything else is just redicoulous 2

wellenbrecher Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Good! I wish they had shared the same stuff in the international forum as well or had made it part of the DD/patch notes as they now did with the limited numbers in MP. Good, clear, non-judgemental communication is key, especially at the moment.

III/JG11_Tiger Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I may be proved wrong but it seems the Devs almost went out of their way to mess up things that were already how you would expect them, surely expert mode means just that and all help should be off, then of course there is graphics presets and unlocks It's hard to recall another sim/game that was going so well during the very early days of pre purchase only for the devs to gradually change it into something else, it's like things in the last few months just went backwards, I just can't for the life of me understand their decisions, I hope for their sake it pays off but I feel they have lost many of the people that like this type of FS sim without gaining enough of those that love FS games 1
wellenbrecher Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 See Yakmaster's post, Tiger. i was the one that said that, actually yesterday i was playing a campaign mission, and i have not GPS icon, dunno why, but it seems random, cause early in the morning i had'em. seems devs are testing something Oops, sorry man. Well, as Yakmaster wrote, they seem to at least plan to make it removable in MP via server setting in the future, so the way I see it the issue would be solved once they do so. I still won't make the SP more difficult for me for the same reward as flying with the helpers, but MP really was my main concern here.
