II./JG27_Rich Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 How exactly will this work for a big server like Spits VS 109s? Can a server like this work with this sim? It wont launch through the Hyperlobby anymore right? The server is just in the list in game like Rise Of Flight?
Heywooood Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) my understanding is that all gameplay runs through their servers - its how all the stats are compiled and maintained unless like RoF where you can select offline mode - in which case you can play the SP only and no stats are recorded only 1CGS can say how big those servers are - and whether or not they will be parsed for DF vs some kind of Co-op or what have you... I think this is why they want the Premies to participate in scheduled events - so all this stuff can be looked at - what do people want to play..how many can participate per server, is all that background (foreground) gameplay service ready to go and can it handle the loads...I expect them to open a session and start adding players and adding players until it shows a negative gameplay result - just so they can determine the limits - not that its an unknown...but the difference between what the papers say you can do and what the reality is once the wheels are put in actual motion is always a bit different. People might get upset and say the online servers are porked - but they might not realise how many players are on that server at that time - it might be part of a test... I hope people will be patient and really understand that Premium and Standard preorderers are simply beta testers - the game wont be THE GAME until it is released to the general population next year. kestrel79 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Can't wait for a server like Spits vs 109s in BoS...that was my fav server to fly on in IL2
II./JG27_Rich Posted August 11, 2013 Author Posted August 11, 2013 I think I understand. In rise Of Flight they have all of the pilot stats right there so they're keeping track just like a Dogfight server.
Sim Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 The way I understand it they will be releasing a dedicated server software (Windows only). You will run that software on your server and will have an option to make it ranked or not. Ranked servers will track pilot stats. Also, I think I read that only in unranked servers you will be able to choose any user/historical skins (for ranked servers you will need to unlock additional skins with historical SP campaign). Correct me if I am wrong. Also, in the USS Hornet event/presentation there was a slide that mentioned the servers will be able to handle "up to 100 players".
Skoshi_Tiger Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 (and a second question) ... what sort of ping speed is stable in MP ROF (I assume it will be similar to BoS), the unfortunate reality is that to find a populated server I'd be joining games on the other side of the world. IL2 and COD give me acceptable play at up to about 320ms - Which is what I get at times. How would ROF handle that ping?

We run our ROF/IL2/CLOD server in Switzerland, our regular pilots join from USA, Europe and South Africa. South Africa gives a ping around 350. It's playable. No tangible difference between ROF and IL2. Multi Player is quite well tuned now, you used to get a slight pause or stutter when another plane arrived in range of yours but that seems to have dissapeared. Of course at 350 you may get some complaints about warping but you do in IL2 as well. Far east to Europe may not be great, we have one player in Australia, another in Korea, on teamspeak they can be 2/5. You may be luckier with East coast USA. They may also be awake when you play?
