Smart scaling?

As far as I've ever been able to discern. RoF and thence BoS don't feature any sort of object scaling for distant aircraft. Does it? I assume it renders them at their exact size. Not making farther away objects artificially larger to make them easier to see. Some flight sims do this aperantly. RoF does have extremely good distance rendering.

I think BoS does an excellent job of rendering distant aircraft (not so much with ground objects, but let's wait and see about that)

I wouldn't want it to change that much.

I think BoS does feature smart scaling now. Not sure how they could've improved visibility that much compared to earlier BoS versions without the use of smart scaling.

For me, visibility is perfect now, at least for spotting planes. Ground objects are still pretty hard to spot. Maybe a bit harder than it should be.

I agree.

Ground object spotting in RoF is excellent too.

Currently I think RoF is a bit better than BoS.

BoS seems to have jaggies and vanishing bits the way CoD did (before TF which I haven't tried) but not as bad. Hopefully BoS is still being polished. In RoF you can count the struts on the other aircraft from very far away.

Currently BoS AA is limited to 4X whereas RoF gets 8X. Maybe that's why.

If this smart scaling feature was present in RoF then when you're doing a ground attack mission the planes on to ground would look too big. I don't think this feature is used.

Air visibility is fine. Seems completely realistic and I think they've done a great job. You have to properly look to see contacts a good way off.

Ground is pretty bad currently though. When you zoom in and out from really not far away things they just appear and disappear all of a sudden. This applies even to big things like He-111s. Hopefully this gets improved as usually I like to keep my view zoomed back and don't want to have to keep zooming in until large ground items just pop into existence.

No it's not used in RoF.

Ground spotting in RoF is easier for various reasons. Lower speed (=more time to spot for targets), often lower altitude, overall flatter terrain. In BoS, there's lots of bump mapping on the ground, which makes ground units blend in better with the terrain. And the tanks for instance are much better camouflaged. Also the planes in RoF have no canopy and you can look directly downwards or around the planes nose in most of those planes, while in the BoS planes, there's a big wing and cowling in the way, if you can actually open the canopy during flight.

I was just commenting to a fellow pilot on how the ground objects are hard to see.

His reply was " shoot the one that's shooting you".

Great advice lol.

I think you're probably joking about "good advice", however one of the primary rules of ground attack in the real world is never

attack a gun that's shooting at you unless it's your assigned target.

My only complaint with BoS at present is the tanks and (especially) vehicles are too hard to see. Having done a fair amount of 300m to 2000m flying in real life I think they come across too small in BoS by comparison.

But hey, the rest of the sim to date is magnificent.

I agree it would be nice if they were a little easier to spot.

Well I don't think "scaling" the objects would be a good solution. It would be very odd to see objects, especially on the ground, bigger than they should be.

I think part of the problem with ground vehicles is they aren't treated in the same way as aircraft.  If aircraft were treated in the same way as trucks for example then the white surfaces of target aircraft would blend in with the snow, when you flew above them, unless you were close.  Instead they appear as dark objects moving across the snowy landscape, thus we can see them from above, dive down and attack them.  The LOD's of vehicles don't seem to be treated in the same manner making it frustratingly difficult to spot them.  It's not, as far as I know, as if the A.I are moaning about how unfair life is that it's too easy to get killed or that the weapon parameters or D/M is totally unrealistic.
