II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 The Completely Unofficial Welcome to Steam Users and Otherwise New Pilots to the Forums: Hey, I’m just a gamer like you. I fly helicopters and light planes in real life. I got into Il2 Sturmovik; Battle of Stalingrad on the ground floor back in December. I have been a flight sim and aerial combat simmer/junkie for about twenty years now and I just want to say, Welcome to the Il2 Sturmovik Forums. We are delighted to have you come over from Steam and other points on the compass into our little (not that little) world of combat flight simming. Please take the time to look around. We have all of the usual characters here: fanbois, haters, very knowledgeable pilots, pilots seeking knowledge and a few who THINK they are very knowledgeable. Most are willing to share their advice. Most are willing to share their opinions. Many are willing to share their expertise. Some, like me, are willing to challenge you for your data sources to support your argument. There are the mature guys, the immature guys, and a few gals here as well. You will find allies and opponents in the sim - and in the forum too if you post a lot. Thus far we have been a fairly polite community; well behaved and well moderated. This last point bears inspection: Please read the rules before posting. They are available in the first forum header above. This will save you possible heartache, claims of censorship and the ban hammer. The ban hammer doesn’t get used often here because open conversation is a good thing and this community is pretty good to one another for the most part. Stay on topic, bring more than hearsay or opinion, and present in a mature way. Be civil and argue to the topic not the presenter. There are known problems with the game. Many are minor, a few are glaring and you may find some that are unknown. All of this is to be expected in the Beta Stage. This too bears inspection: Before posting, I strongly encourage you to do three things. First: Read the FAQ – It has lots of pertinent information. Second: Read the Dev Blog – it is long (now) and some of the early information may be dated but there is valuable information regarding the vision and direction of the Dev’s to be found there. Third: Use the Search function. The blog has been going for a fair amount of time and it is likely your question has been either touched on or answered already. The Search function is not perfect but it is a place to start. The downside to all of the above is we in the community have been at it for 75’ish weeks. We have read the blogs and threads as they have been released. You get to read them all at once or in chunks. We, like you, have high expectations and high hopes for this sim. It covers only the period of time from November 19, 1942 to February 2, 1943 and there is a lot of snow. There is no summer map as of yet. I suspect the next release will have a greater variety of seasons as there are hints of it if you look deeply for it in the threads. There is no word yet on the specifics of any expansion or future theaters. Some important don’t(s): Don’t expect the Dev’s to respond to you directly. They only do this in limited cases. The Dev’s communicate regularly, usually on Fridays and usually weekly through the blog. Don’t bother asking about clickable cockpits or putting animated pilots in the cockpit. They have been debated to death and it has been clearly stated neither will be featured in BOS. If you purchased the game through Steam your key is good on Steam. If you purchased your key directly from 1C/777 it cannot, at present, be activated on Steam. This is a Valve issue not a 1C/777 issue. We will all fly on the same servers at launch. Back to the positives: The game has very high fidelity in regards to physics. There may be some minor flight model tweaks to come but the physics is there and the aircraft have, “weight.” There is no flying on rails here. If you come from some of the other sims you may have to change your way of flying these high powered beasts, with weight, to be successful. If you fly other sims with a good sense of energy retention and situational awareness you will have success here as well. Keep in mind, however, you are going to be immediately confronted in multi-player arenas with multi-kill/multi-ace pilots with hundreds of hours in the sim and thousands of hours in combat flight sims overall. The learning curve may be steep at first but think how steep it must have been for a bunch of twenty somethings in 1942 with more than their VR lives at stake. Offline play is available in the QMB for now and the off-line campaign is waiting in the wings. Bring a friend, because everyone needs a wingman. Join a squad, experiment off-line or jump into the deep end with MP. You can lone wolf it, furball it or fly to stay alive. Mostly we, like you, are here to have fun. It is a glorious time to be a combat flight simmer again and we, again like you, hope for this sim’s success and the expansion into all theaters of combat. In short, Welcome…………………and Check Six. Horrido, HerrMurf 13
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Thanks, It's been a thought for quite a while now. Finally had the time to put pen to paper as they say.
JimTM Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Salut Murf! I can feel the excitement build as the He 111 gets closer, the devs start to firm up the functionality for release, and more people start to roll into the hanger from Steam. It's been a hoot so far! Cheers!
J2_Trupobaw Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 (edited) Well said HerrMurf,If I were to add something, it would be"Read developers posts about future game content, because that's what you're going to get. The team sticks to the roadmap they made and does not stray much to include player wishlists and inspirations. They don't promise things unless they are sure they can deliver and so far have delivered exactly what they promised. It does not mean they ignore player feedback - there are threads made to collect suggestions of corrections, adjustments, new features and of course bugs - but they won't address every new idea, will not say they'd like to include this and that only to later back out. Yes means yes, no means no, "in future if BoS sells well" means exactly that and silence does not mean you've been ignored. I hope . Finally, do not begrudge dev team for not including things you wanted and they never promised, even if you thought it obvious this game is incomplete without them." Don’t bother asking about clickable cockpits or putting animated pilots in the cockpit. They have been debated to death and it has been clearly stated neither will be featured in BOS. I'd add higher versions of DirectX and version for 64bit processors to the list, both often requested and not going to be featured. At least, not at launch. Edited August 21, 2014 by Trupobaw
SR-F_Winger Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 S!. Well done and thanks for the effort towards our new prey - eh, fellow pilots:)
Leaf Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Very well said Muff.. Check that spelling LOL. Unless that was intentional and I'm missing out on a long-standing inside joke.
RainMan Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Nice write-up. Being new to BoS myself, what resonates with me the most is this: "It is a glorious time to be a combat flight simmer again". I totally agree.
ScotsmanFlyingscotsman Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Things for all of us to look at in this sound advice, been at this years...still learning
