BrutalRage Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 So as you may have guessed this forum is about controlls! I used to play the first IL sturmovik and loved it. I used a logitech force feeback joystick but i sold it cause this game was the only game i played it with. After that came the xbox (arcade) version and I cryed because it was so bad. And now it seems its back and good. So what should i buy for the best way to play this game? And no i am not gonne pay $$$$$$$$$$$ but I do have a bit of money to spend. Recommondations ? What do you play with? Thanks in advance greetings BrutalRage
Finkeren Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I use the Saitek X55 without rudder pedals or headtracking gear, so I'm fairly basic in my controls. IMHO a HOTAS is an absolute requirement to fly in BoS. You'll need the throttle and at least a couple of rotaries/sliders, if you're hoping to fly anything besides the Bf 109.
Gambit21 Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I've been using a Cyborg X twist stick since the old IL2. and love it. When it the old one wouldn't work anymore after Windows 7 came out, I bought the new version of the stick. It's perfect for my purposes. Compact, enough buttons for a WWII sim, I do great with it against online foes - I have no reason to use anything else.

PatrickShiva Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 i would recommend the saitek x55 and saitek combat rudder pedals
Sokol1 Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) IL sturmovik...After that came the xbox (arcade) ...I do have a bit of money to spend. Try the game with you XBox controller, some get used. Or ~ 50$ = Buy a entry level "all-in-1" joystick, the "best" is Thrustmaster T.16000M as suggested above. ~ 150/200$ = HOTAS Saitek, X-52/PRO, X-55. ~ 300/350$ = HOTAS CH plus rudder pedal from CH ~ 600~1000$ = Hotas Warthog (~500$) plus rudder pedal (that cost ~90~550$) Obs. From the above HOTAS the most suitable for WWII planes is X-55, because offer more "rotaries" and press button instead HAT on left side of joystick. Have fun. Sokol1 Edited August 16, 2014 by Sokol1
BrutalRage Posted August 17, 2014 Author Posted August 17, 2014 Thanks for all the reply's some good advice.
39bn_pavig Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 When away from home I use an Xbox controller and this on the ipad http://touchpilot.com/touch-pilot-one/ for some extra axes and buttons. But I would not recommend it over a true stick. It is uncomfortable to play this way. By the way, if anyone finds something slightly more customisable than touchpilot let me know.
malcheus Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 My experience with an xbox controller in flightsims is that you simply don't have enough precision. I tried it with FSX, which worked fine; no dogfighting there and very big planes that don't wobble as much. Then I tried RoF, and it was horrible. you just keep wobbling about and it is very difficult to compensate small turbulences without overcompensating; let alone do any dogfighting. A definate plus is the second analog stick, which you can use to look around (I used Xpadder to map mouse movements to one of the analog sticks). So perhaps I should modify my previous statements and say: xbox controllers are very nice for big planes like bombers, if you don't have TrackIR, but not so much for small, agile planes.
J2_Trupobaw Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Grab Thrustmaster T.16000m. Good and affordable. This. T.16000m has best price / quality ratio of sticks in production. Microsoft FFB 2 is even better, if you can find used one at good price (they are pretty cheap if you live in North America, or bit expansive for what they do in Europe). Everything more fancy is buying yourself expansive gifts rather than cost-effective gaming tools.

I hope this is not off topic but I recently noticed this Ipad app http://remoteflight.net/remote-flight-cockpit-hd whilst it does not act as a controller I think it could certainly complement the touchpilot app you mention. On the website It states "Overall compatible with FSX / Prepar3D / FS9 / X-Plane 10 (all on Windows) Basic and simple gauges like airspeed, altimeters, gyro etc. will work with any aircraft HSI and VOR gauges may not work with PMDG products and other more advanced addons "RPM gauge only works with piston propelled aircraft. It's a shame because I believe it could work quite well with other sims. It has been on the market for quite a while so I'm guessing a lot of you guys may already aware of it, if so, apologies. I have mailed the guy to see whether he has considered increasing compatibility to include sims like BOS and DCS, I'll just have to wait and see if I get a reply.

I had a look at this and it seems to be particular to FSX and other major flightsims as it works as a kindof virtual cockpit plugin. TouchPilot is ok and is a basic HID device, but I ended up buying a Saitek X55 Hotas and pedals so only use touchpilot when on the road now.
Pajeka Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 No problem, I just saw it and thought it could be a useful addition for all sims. Like you, I also use Saitek X55 Hotas, pedals and after your mention above have also bought Touchpilot. I have yet to try it, perhaps a job for the weekend....
