Great artwork.  A really good eye for composition as well as detail.  Much better than Trudgian and the like.

S! Spectacular artwork indeed. I never though the Lancaster looked any pretty but his artwork puts them into a completel different light for me. Also check his artwork for Prinz Eugen and Gneisenau (same patch below the Lancaster pics).

Yes, this guy is well worth a look. The detail, lighting, everything's great. There's an interesting account of how he goes about creating them, too.

I see a reference to Rise of Flight on that second link as well:  :)

Typical of the higher-end of the visual world of flight simulator “skins” is this remarkably beautiful rendition of a Sopwith Pup which I found on the Wings of Honor website. This screen capture was taken during a flight simulation as the gamer flies the Pup skin around in the simulated world. This was the type of images I was collecting for my story on what I thought was “like art”. Screen capture via Wingsofhonor.com

I'd be cautious of comparing art composed of a digital model and essentially over-painting to traditional painting techniques. Comparing it to a hand drawn and hand painted piece of art isn't quite apples to oranges but maybe oranges to tangellos.

I like this and some of the other digital stuff a great deal. I'd even like to buy a couple of these pieces if I can find a reseller but the ability to reposition the model, draw and redraw - with layers, and make changes on the fly hardly compares to brush art. Think of the steady hand required for paint, selection an mixing of colors on the fly, brush choices, etc. I agree Trudgian (and Stokes) has an interesting take on lighting but I'd never part with my small collection of Taylor and Keith Ferris prints.

I do own Dru Blair's (one of the early airbrush/digital artists) Pearl Harbor print and it is spectacular.

I agree with regards to the medium used. A more tangible artwork will always have a greater sense of value than the virtual I suspect.

I find that several of the big name aviation artists are very far behind with regards to artistic composition though. Many appear very juvenile in the way they are laid out. I often imagine Trudgian waking up in a cold sweat, as he realises there is some square inch of canvas where he still has room for a brown tree, burning plane or waving farmer etc.

Comparing oranges to tangelos.

That should be a saying.
