Historical Memory of Aviation Survey

Hi sim pilots,

My name is Alex, and I am a sim pilot myself. I am writing a research paper for a class on the historical memory of WWII on the Eastern Front. My focus is on aviation, and I have created a survey to see how simulator pilots in IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad relate to the history that is represented in the simulator. This survey is comprised of eight (8) multiple-choice questions and shouldn't take more than 1-3 minutes to complete. Please take this survey by the end of the day on Friday, August 15, 2014. It would really help me out!

Please note that I am not affiliated in any way with 1C Game Studios/777 Studios. This survey is for academic purposes only. If you take the survey, you have the option of being emailed the final results once the survey is completed.

Thank you!

Done.

It shows that you're a sim pilot yourself. The questions reflect many of the topics discussed on this and other forums, and I think most ppl here can easily relate to them.

Good luck with the study.

For those that are worried about the link: survey monkey is widely used in academia and has a good track record.

Thank you to all of you who have already taken the survey (and especially for those who voiced support for my study)! I will email the results to those who requested them at the end of the day today. I have also decided to post the results in this thread in order to open up a discussion for those who would like to comment on them. I will also paraphrase some of the great feedback that some of you have left for me at the end of the survey, because I think you brought up some very good points.

I currently have 71 people who have responded to the survey. It would be fantastic to have at least 100 for a more accurate sample of the community. If you are a pilot in IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad and haven't taken the survey yet, please do so by the end of the day today: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TQGZ5BV

Thanks again!

Alex

Hi sim pilots,

Thank you again for those that have participated in the survey. The survey is now closed, but I have sent the results to those that requested them and have attached the data for each question to this post as well. Please take a look and feel free to post comments about the results. Did any of them surprise you? What do you think of the data distributions? All constructive comments are welcome. If you would not like your feedback to be possibly quoted in my paper, please mention that in your post.

Some of you brought up some good points already in the comments section of the survey. Here is a summary:

  • The original IL-2: 1946 simulator was the one that raised some of the participants' interest in aviation on the Eastern Front
  • Question 6 (balance of power in the real Battle of Stalingrad) may be misleading because the balance of power shifted during the course of the battle
  • Preference for side (Russian or German) may be influenced by current events as well as historical reasons
  • I forgot to include "Central Europe" as one of the options for where people are from in the world (Question 8)
  • The game is in its current form is in Early Access stage and perceptions of the history portrayed may change if/when campaign mode is added

What do you think?

Alex

Hmm,

It's interesting that the side preference question resulted in a pretty much draw for german/soviet sides. Considering this survey was oriented to english-speaking section of the community - if you take into account Russian players the Soviet Union side should be way more popular overall. This did surprise me quite a lot as I though everyone liked German machines more, hehe :-)

And it's a bit surprising to see that almost half of players only play 1-3 hours in a week. But I guess due to current early access limitations (very little single player content and furbal multiplayer matches) this does add up.

Actually  surprisingly large number of Russian players prefer flying the Messerschmitt above all others.

I think the 1-3 hours adds up to a more mature audience overall. People with jobs and kids and a mortgage. Certainly not exclusively but generally. Look at the investment in equipment alone compared to console gaming. Some of it is also probably people playing less than when the game is completed at release. I know when I was out on disability with a really severe injury I was playing BF2 and Il2 regularly. As I got closer to full duty I was literally playing BF2 3-4 hours daily and Il2 1-3 hours daily. Ah, those were the days.......powerful meds (early) and nothing to do all day (later) but gaming.
