Bf-109F  - you know already (but it was getting old in battle of Stalingrad)

Me-262a1 - not the most beautiful lines, but terrific performance, armament and very interesting history

Macchi C.202 - simply beautiful, i have a model of it which is probably the least fucked up from that collection

Yak-9 - not beautiful but i still like its look

Fiat G.55 - maybe, it was rare but had extremely smooth lines

Can't decide about battle, what comes to my mind is Winter War, MTO, battle between Hungarian air force and US bombers in '44, and BoB has to be there

1. P47 (sheer size and power very usuable for us mud movers)
2. P40 (amazingly well made allround fighter available in most theaters)
3. Fw-190 (perfect for multimission, avoid contact heading for target and after ground attack you're in a very nifty fighter, like the F-16C)
3. Bf110 (always fun to fly but I rarely get back to home plate)
5. FFVS J22 (not well known so I'll hand you a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFVS_22  - yet to be seen in a simgame)

Theater: North Africa and Finland

Posted

1. P-51 (speed and long range)
2. Fw190A (fast and manoeuvrable, good inflight visibility and a powerful weaponry)
3. Spitfire (nice looking warbird, with the greatest engines)
4. P-47 (a turbo-compressor with a plane around)
5. Me109 (a little but powerful plane, IMO overrated because of the quality of his pilots)

My selection is for flying them in a sim:

1 - Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIc. Nice old kite, well armed and suitably sluggish for my flying

2 - IL2. Nothing beat a good round of mud-moving!

3 - Ju 88. In old IL21946 she was a dream to fly!

4 - Finnish Brewster. I once had it described as "an epileptic peanut", a fun plane to fly, and quite competitive in it's timeframe

5 - Beaufighter. Tough as nails, hard hitting and stable.

Favourite scenario: Early mid war (1941/42), or backwater scenarios from later in the war dominated by planes from the 41/42 period, like the battles in Africa or Far East

1. BF109

2. FW190 ( A series)

3. F4F - the only good looking american fighter in my eyes, and the only one who wasnt clearly superior  to the japanese fighters. Just love it.

4. I-16 Mosca -  hero of the spanish civil war, just beautiful to look at. i felt a bti sad its not on BOS for now :/

5. Spitfire  - looks good on the gunsight

battles:

otugh choice, but for the planes Stalingrad, or anything before that for the planeset. For the most pitched battle i would go for midway. IT's one of the few battles where both armys were equiped with similar equipment and had equal odds to win. it al went down to who had the best tactics.

1. Hawker Hurricane  - the workhorse, the unsung hero of BoB,  the reliable one-what's not to like?
2. Mosquito
3. Ju 87
4 Il 2 M3 (more workhorses)
5. Bf-109 (the icon and the workhorse)

Yep, I have weak spot for planes that qualify as workhorse...

Can I simply take Battle of Britain? If not, the Italian campaign.

Well to fly in a sim, it would be the

Ju88

Do 24 one of the few aircraft on axis & allied sides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_24

He111 E

FW 200

and although destroyed during testing the

Me 264 that would have been Germanys answer to the B-29

As to a specific battle I would say the battle of Norway, never been done

in a sim, but it has a nice combination of naval, air and land forces.

For looks and nostalgia:

Spitfire Mk II

Hurricane Mk II

Lancaster

To "fly"

Hurricane IIc - bumbles genially about the sky, but woe betide any plane that gets in front of those 20mm

Bf109 F4 - if I have to fly blue.

Theatre:  Battle of Britain

Posted

1. Supermarine Spitfire MkI and II. As soon as they put cannons on it, they interrupted the beautiful curve of the wing........

2. DeHavilland Mosquito B Mk IV. The original unarmed 'speed bomber'. Beautiful.

3. Hawker Hurricane MkIIa. The slightly longer nose from the Merlin XX makes it look far more capable, which it was, because of the merlin XX.

4. Avro Lancaster BI. Original and best.

5. Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a. Just awesome in every way.

Theatre: I'll give you three guesses. No I won't, Battle of Britain. :)

Posted

1. F6F Hellcat (Ruggedly American. Probably the aircraft that most defined its country of origin. It's like the muscle car of airplanes.)

2. P-40 Tomahawk (An all-around great flying and combat capable airplane. A jack of all trades and very pilot friendly.)

3. Bf-109 (A fighter that seems built specifically to win air-to-air engagements. Despite some strange modifications late war, it stands as a prime example of aerial weaponry.)

4. P-47 Thunderbolt (Raw power and brute force personified. Looks like a bathtub and handles like one, but flies high, flies fast, dives like hell, and has one hell of an armament.)

5. P-38 Lightning (Just something about the looks. Second kind of cool.)

Pacific Theater, in particular the island hopping campaign. A close second is the North African campaigns.

Posted (edited)

1 P-38

2 Douglas SBD

Posted
  1. FW 190 A
  2. BF 109 E - F (the fuselage of the 109 F is the perfect shape of the BF109 series)
  3. De Havilland D.H.98 Mosquito (very nice shape for a twin engine and constructed almost entirely of wood....(I am a carpenter....)) ;)
  4. Spitfire (the early versions)
  5. P38 Lightning (flown by Saint Ex.....my passion for airplanes began with the Books from Saint Ex in the book shelf of my father....)

Theatres: North Africa, Russia (almost forgotten untill the IL2 series...thx IL2 team and Oleg of cource)

Posted

Bf 109 G6 Erla Haube version most favorite of all, cuz I use it better than 90% other virtual pilots ;

FW190 D9 most beatiful;

Ki 61 Hien challenging and exotic ;

IAR 80 favorite crap plane ;

Mig 3 cuz it took about 15 seconds from headon to know who you`re facing - a misoriented Yak driver or GIAP member.

1944 Reichsvertedigung winter cuz I get to shoot american newbies.

Well where to start..but here goes:

P-47D or N bubbletop - Probably the most rugged fighter aircraft ever made. The variety of missions from ground pounding to high escort, along with it's sublime Boom and Zoom capabilities just make this my favourite ever aircraft.

P-47 - Razorback (see above)

P-51 - Similar to the above in it's devastating all round ability. Superb for long range escort missions, turn fighting, speed, looks.....pretty much the pinup aircraft of the USAAF.

P-38 - Again all round ability from ground pounding to dscorting bombers. Huge variety of loadouts (like the P-47 has), so a huge diversity of possible missions.

B-24 - One of the most important bombers of WW2. Carried a huge amount of ordnance, returned to base even after suffering some incredibly damaging attacks from ground and aerial assault and served in a huge amount of theatres of war. A perfect companion for the previous fighters I listed.

Finally the battle I'd choose is anything from the MTO followed closely by the PTO.

If I had to choose a mission it would be "Operation Titanic", to attack the oil fields deep in Eastern Germany and then land in Russia Poltava and Mirgarod).

If I had to choose just one of the above though it would be the P-47 Razorback, a totally amazing all round aircraft......or would I choose the Bubbletop?!

Cheers, MP

LOL, everyone's favourite topic! :) as it should be!

Favorite Planes (in random order):

1. Focke Wulf 190 A (great modern design)

2. P-51 D (for it's lovely looks and stellar performance)

3. P-40 B /Tomahawk (best looking P-40, think Desert Air force and Flying Tigers)

4. Spitfire V (it's a classic, nuf said)

5. F4F Wildcat (very Grumman, very US Navy, very tough)

Favorite Theater:

North Africa 1941-1943. Thinking as a mission designer, this theater offers a lot of diversity in types of missions: Air superiority, Ground attack, Bombing, Naval warfare, Special ops (SAS) and more. Lots of plane types: British, American, German, Italian and even French. And a lot of action (going back and forth) in one region so a lot of different historical scenarios to be researched and played out!
