Jason_Williams Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Ok let's have a fun thread where we list some of our favorite warbirds and battles. We all love planes and history so let's have some fun instead of arguing. 1. List your top 5 WWII planes. You can choose only 5. Feel free to say why they are your favorite. This is not a list of the best planes, just your favorites. 2. List your all-time favorite WWII theater of battle or if that is too broad then name your favorite battle. You can only choose one. Favorite Planes: 1. TBD-1 Devastator (unsung hero of Midway, but a plane that had some very cool unique features) 2. P-61 Black widow (Technological marvel) 3. P-40 Kittyhawk/Warhawk (underrated warrior) 4. P-39 Airacobra (unpopular, but so cool looking) 5. P-47 Thunderbolt (tough as nails and could do it all) Favorite Battle: Battle of Midway (epic carrier on carrier violence that turned the tide for America in the Pacific) Jason 4
FuriousMeow Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 1) F4F Wildcat 2) I-16 Ishak/Mosca/Rata 3) P38 Lightning 4) I agree with the P-39 5) Mosquito I really liked the old Battle of Britain movie, so that's going to be my favorite dramatization of a battle.
JaMz Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 1. Bf109 (some variants sucked but just for the airframe in general and how successful it was, work of art) 2. Spit Mk5 (completely turned this fighter once it got its new power plant and hispanos, very good match against the 109F) 3. P51 (always loved this plans for its looks and it's 50's were awesome, beautiful plane) 4. B17 (Made a massive difference to the war effort over here, so iconic) 5. Me262 (just for its sure brilliance and a technological marvel and looked bad ass, can't even imagine seeing that for the first time in the skies above Europe Favourite Battle: I have a few but il sit on the fence with the classic BoB, strange circle of events, introduced heroes on all sides and helped turn the tide of the war
JtD Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Five is really limiting, there's lots of aircraft I like, and which one are in the top 5 changes pretty much on an hourly basis. I think I'll be going with 1 single engined fighter aircraft for the five biggest ac manufacturering nations, include twins and none fighter aircraft, and I could not decide within a day. 1. Ki-61 I 2. Typhoon Ib 3. La-5FN 4. Fw 190A-5 5. P-51D Favourite Battle: Invasion of Sicily
csThor Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I don't have that many favourites. In no particular order: 1.) Fw 190 2.) Hs 129 3.) Ju 87 As for the battle I'm most interested in the answer is clear: Operation Citadel. It's quite remarkable that - with sufficient modern and objective literature - one can peal away the layers of post-war embroideries and urban myths about it and realize that it can't be seen on its own but in conjunction with other developments (i.e. Husky, soviet offensive preparations at the Mius and south of Kharkov etc).

Clark Gable) 3) F4F Wildcat (hero of the pacific 1942) 4) Bf 109F2 & F4 (most elegant) 5) B-25 Mitchell (would be my choice to fly in harm's way if a P-38 wasn't available) N. Africa

Sethos Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Being very non-specific as I'm not well-versed in the various versions of WW2 aircrafts. 1) 109 - Beautiful plane, extremely iconic for WW2 and almost any game where it's available it has been a pleasure to fly. 2) Spitfire ( Later versions ) - Another iconic plane, also extremely beautiful and sounds great. 3) P-38 Lightning - Always loved the look of the plane. 4) B-17 - Again, iconic and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 5) FW 190 - Excellent plane, pleasure to fly in most sims. Favourite Battle: Hmmm, I don't have a favourite specific battle but my favourite TO is definitely the western front, battle in and around mainland Europe.
