Game does not launch after update

Hello, I just ran the new update because I wanted to check out Flying Circus.  At first I ran into the "failed to update" error. But I followed what I found on the forum and deleted the contents of the Update folder. That seemed to work because it then installed the update and looked successful.  However, now, when I launch the game, the launcher runs, the black game window pops up, I hear sound and see the red progress bar moving across the screen. And then nothing. The window goes away and the game doesn't start.  How do I troubleshoot this?

Is it possibly related to authentication after the update? This morning I tried again and it got to the login screen, which it hadn't previously in all my attempts. This time, I put in my username and password and after about 10 seconds, It closed the window with no error, but the game did not start. But it was different from the previous behavior.

And now, it's opening a black window, I hear sound and nothing. No prompt for credentials, just sound (the normal ambient startup sounds). And eventually the game window just closes. So confusing. There is nothing in the various log files in the data subfolder. Like they are literally empty zero contents files.  I also tried deleting startup.cfg like I read somewhere on the forums. But that didn't help, then it just wouldn't launch at all.  Not sure how to do a repair and not lose all my mappings and settings.
