Keymapper weirdness - can map throttle buttons, but they don't work in-cockpit.

Just wanted to get back into things and it seems I'd made the fatal mistake of unplugging my stick and throttle and then re-plugging them at a later time in the "incorrect" order.

My pedals and stick seem unaffected by this both in the game and in the keymapper as they still have their "proper" IDs (pedals = Joy0, stick = Joy1, apparently).

My throttle is a different matter.

Since I've stopped playing any games that would require it, I've stopped splitting my throttle into multiple 32-button devices and I run it as God intended (as a single device). It's a Virpil CM3, BTW, which I had to fiddle around with a bit because I was silly enough to update its firmware and software and Virpil have changed some vital details in there WRT axes calibration and those virtual engine cut-off buttons. But I digress.

The thing is that I re-mapped the throttle in IL-2 already a week or so ago (everything was "Joy9" now) and I did fly at that time and everything worked as it should.

When I fired up the game just now however, nothing on the throttle was working any longer and, for some reason or another, it is now labeled as "Joy10" in the keymapper... so all my "Joy9"-mappings stopped working, of course.. 😕

Problem is that while I can map everything on the throttle within the key-mapper, none of those mapping will work in the game. The axes don't work in-cockpit and they also don't work in the "tune axis" sub-menu in the keymapper. The keys I can map and they'll get recognized within the keymapper, but they won't work in the game itself.

I also noticed that the button numbers are off between any joystick tester I've tried (tried both Virpil and VKB testers) and what IL-2 "sees" them as. They always seem to be shown as one lower than what any of the testers report. Meaning the button I want to use for, say, VR view reset is reported as button 33 by all the test apps but IL-2 calls it "32".

I'm not sure what to do at this point as I don't recall ever running into this issue - though, granted, I've never run this throttle in the "non-split" configuration in IL-2. Seems to work perfectly in DCS, however and I'm pretty sure that IL-2 can support 128 button devices now, can't it?

Also: Could this be related to me having a bunch of "dead" controller-entries within IL-2? As I said: I'm up to "Joy10" now, but I only use three joystick devices (pedals, stick, throttle), so there's bound to be some old redundant entries in there somewhere within the bowels of the game... :(

NVM... looks like the mess of having a full 10 devices in my controls-file in IL-2 was to blame. Game still reports some button-numbers weirdly (don't recall it doing that in the past), but after I renamed the "devices.txt" file and then re-mapped everything and deleted any outdated mappings, everything seems to work as it should.

All three HOTAS components now also have their "proper" numbers and are in sequence (pedals = Joy0, stick = Joy1, throttle = Joy2).

I go back a long time with this publisher "IL-2 Forgotten Battles" when the game was on a CD. Today, to set up a game title, everything seems so confusing and complicatedI I wish for you to find a workaround. All I can say is don't panic, research, be patient, get orginized and write things down. Don't feel bad I'm 77 and trying to get back to "combat flight simming" and now I feel out of place. Good Luck to you.

Well, today we tend to have a lot more hardware. As a kid, a mere joystick was already a luxury. I also played flight sims with a mouse.

Thanks for your understanding!
