Advice on using Nvidia control panel sharpening

Hi,

I am attempting to get image sharpening working using the option in the Nvidia control panel. From what I have read on this forum I believe this is possible, though correct me if I am wrong.

My system is a Windows 11 Pro 25H2 with a Reverb G1 and Nvidia driver version 581.57. The driver was clean installed using the Device Driver Uninstaller via safe mode to ensure any artifacts from previous drivers was removed. The graphics card is a MSI RTX 3080ti.

I have enabled the sharpening option in the Nvidia control panel using the integer scaling method.

I can then set the image sharpening option for IL2 Sturmovik.

I have been altering this setting with IL2 running but after I hit apply I am not seeing any visual changes to image sharpening in my headset.

Maybe I am missing a step or this just doesn't work.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Are you hitting the general "Apply" in addition to the "OK" of the setting?

You won't see any results till this one is hit.

Hi [CPT]Crunch, thanks for the reply.

I have just double checked to make sure I wasn't missing a step. I selected the sharpening values and then pressed OK to close that window.

Then I hit Apply.

All of this was done with IL2 running and a quick mission in progress. I am not seeing any visible change to image sharpening in my VR headset.

There's a limit on what sharpening can do for this game, the biggest place you can visibly see results is in spotting contacts at distance.  That's where you'll get the most mileage in fine tuning it.

The game itself is too dated and can only be pushed and propped up so far when it comes to graphics.  If your looking for graphical beauty she's been maxed already on much older hardware.  But quality of your contact spotting ability is linked in a big way with sharpening, it has some very noticeable effects on it.  It'll also affect shimmer and FPS in many a VR HMD, but improved quality of the over all scene is not going to be as dramatic, this engine's a bit dated.

Thanks, sounds like I was expecting too much. I'll play around with the settings, anything to reduce that shimmer and aid spotting will be a benefit.

There exists also an alternative. If you have active GeForce Experience overlay, you can press Alt+F3 during the game, side panel appears and there you can add Sharpening filter. It has the same settings (Sharpen, Film Grain). Once you apply it, this filter remain active until you remove it manually, so it don't need to be done every time after the game restart. I successfuly used this metod in two games (AC: Valhalla and Plague Tale Requiem).

Thanks Kubert, I'll give that a try. Any extra help on the visuals for my old eyes is always a plus.
