"Hornet’s Nest" a Scripted Campaign for the Me 410 A-1 "Hornisse"

About The Campaign

The Messerschmitt 410 A-1 “Hornisse” was developed by the German Luftwaffe after the beginning of World War II as a replacement for the aging Bf 110 twin-engine heavy fighter, night fighter, and light bomber. There were considerable delays during development, but the Me 410 A-1 was finally available for operational service in 1943. The Hornisse was faster than almost all Allied fighters of the time and relied on its speed and rear-facing defensive turrets to survive enemy attacks. The heavy firepower it carried made it a devastating bomber destroyer, but the lack of maneuverability was always a concern for the Hornisse pilots.

You will begin the “Hornet’s Nest” campaign as a new lieutenant, starting your career on the western front. You have been assigned to Kampfgeschwader 2, where you are tasked with delivering one of the first Me 410s to your unit on the front line in Normandy. You will fly each mission with a radio operator in the rear cockpit, who is responsible for communicating with ground stations, operating the radio guidance systems in the aircraft, and manning the rear gun turrets in the event of enemy contact.

During this campaign, you will fly night fighter and bomber missions during the “Baby Blitz” of England. You will serve temporary duty as a test pilot with Erprobungskommando 25 to experiment with new weapons systems during daylight bomber raids over Holland, and you will return to your original unit before the Allied Invasion of France in 1944. During the invasion, you will oppose the Allied forces for as long as your unit is able.

This is a historically based campaign, with most mission events based on operational records. Some creative interpretation has been applied for improved gameplay and to fit the missions within existing map parameters.

Just played the third mission, hunting bombers over Holland/Amsterdam.

Unfortunately very disappointing because the bombers doesn’t defend themselves, just a B26 turkey shot.

I assume the gunners are disabled?

I went through mission 11 on my computer and had no issues taking off. I am looking at other possibilities as to what might be wrong. You said in the PM you sent me that the ground was too rough on the airfield and your landing gear was being destroyed while taxiing. I have been unable to duplicate that.

Please record a track file and post it here.

Start the mission, place your plane on autopilot, and go to F2 chase view.

LCtrl + R enables recording. You should get a red camera icon in the top right corner of your screen

Record event

LCtrl + R again disables recording

In your main IL2 directory under data/tracks, there will be a folder and a file starting with 11_Hornets and the date.

Copy those files and post them here.

OK @800nate, I checked your Track File video and I see what you mean. I figured out what the issue is and the ground texture files for the last 3 missions are missing. I will be sending in corrected files by the end of this week, and if all goes well it should be included in the next game update.

Thank you for the report and helping to fix this issue so everyone can complete the campaign!

:good:

Edit... the correction is confirmed to be included in the next update, which should be soon.

I just wanted to say thank you. One of the best campaigns there is. Moreover, the 410 is a very interesting plane.

You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

It is a very unique plane and I enjoyed flying it while I was making the Campaign. I don't know if I would have flown it as much as I did if I had not done the campaign, but I'm glad I got to know it as well as I did. It's very similar to the Ju88 in many ways, which was also a very versatile plane.

Yes, this is an excellent campaign, and it's well-served by the good source material that is out there.

Although, those landings at night are tough! Really have to fly it all the way to the runway and not cut back on the power too soon.

Were you able to reproduce this problem, or is it only happening to me?

Update 6.107 changes;

Increased AI level of enemy bombers to increase defensive fire.

Larger detection areas to prevent missed triggers and directions in various missions.

Addition of ground texture files to correct airfield taxi and takeoff problems in missions 11, 12 and 13.
