Mysticpuma Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Never owned a wheel but fancy giving a few racing games a proper go. That said, I may hate the experience and not continue 🥴 The wheel and pedals I.am considering is the Logitech G29. Anyone used it? Otherwise, any recommendations for a wheel and pedals. Maximum price I want to spend is £1 😂 but seriously, probably £250, as I really want to.see if I like it rather than heading off onto Fanatec kit. Cheers, Mysticpuma
Aapje Posted September 25 Posted September 25 I bought a second hand G29 and it was good enough to have fun. With this kind of kit, you can often find lightly used sets by people who discover that they don't like it, or can't be bothered to set it up to play a game, or just don't have the time to game at all. The steering wheel is the best part, quite reliable even with fairly heavy use and decent FFB. Pedals are the weak part, both the quality and the reliability. They use pots and they obviously like to collect dust being on the ground and below your feet, which pots don't like. When they broke, I sold mine for parts and upgraded. That said, DD sets often cut costs on the pedals as well. If you want to do well at more serious simracing, then proper pedals are one of the most important factors for good lap times. Do keep in mind that even a 3 Nm DD is considerably better than a belt-drive, so don't overspend on a G29. I would also take a look on your local second hand market for cheap lightly used DD sets. On Ebay.co.uk, I saw that multiple Moza R3 bundles got sold for about 280 pounds, and I would much rather get that than spend 180 on a 2nd hand G29. All the low end stuff has lots of people sell it when they either want to upgrade or abandon the hobby, so lots of supply, usually. The higher end stuff is much rarer 2nd hand, because people hang on to it far longer. Do keep in mind that there is a lot of variety in games, from simcade, to track racing, to offroad, to drifting, so don't write it off right away if one kind of game doesn't suit you. 1
Mysticpuma Posted October 11 Author Posted October 11 (edited) Hi, thanks for the comprehensive reply. My main target is PS5 but hopefully a bit of PC too. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have a look and see if the Moza R3 is compatible with both and likely go ahead with a purchase 👍 Edited October 11 by Mysticpuma
Aapje Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Unfortunately the console makers put restrictions on the wheel bases, so the Moza only works with a pretty expensive adapter called the Ras1ution 2. I would not choose to go that route, because then you are dependent on an unofficial mod. Instead, I would get the 5 Nm Fanatec one: https://www.fanatec.com/eu/en/p/sim-racing-bundles/crd-9020007-eu/gran-turismo-dd-pro-5nm-qr2l-eu And then get the Fanatec Boost Kit 180 from Aliexpress to boost it up to 8 Nm for cheap. But it is way above your goal price. Although this stuff tends to keep its value, so if you don't like it, you can always resell.
giftgruen Posted October 12 Posted October 12 (edited) Agree, I also stepped up to a Fanatec 8nm and it feels great. However, if you add LoadCell Pedals and maybe a shifter, you are way above your budget. Before using Fanatec, I was on Thrustmaster TX ( Leather Edition ) and it served me well for some years. Good build quality! TX doesnt work with Playstation afaik but there are other Thrustmaster Options ( T300 is the PS4/PS5 model I think ). Yes, DirectDrive like Moza or Fanatec feels stronger and more detailled than belt drive, but for having some fun I'd say a BeltDrive is completely okay. For Pedals: Maybe try to find a set with LoadCells, makes braking much much more 'intuitive' and consistent. and - Races are won by braking Here in Germany a used T-LCM can be found for 100 EUR with some luck. giftgruen Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Ah - and maybe as a hint and as a motivation: Since you are flying old birds in IL2 - you maybe have some interest in vintage cars ? Automobilista2, The Group5 Mod, some 70s vintage tracks like Silverstone, Spielberg, Oukton park or the Green Hell of Nuerburgring .... I am rather a Flightsimmer than a Racer - but this is some of the best gaming experience you can have. In VR it's so astonishing and immersive !
