Here the supermarketing star Sweviver realizes the big change that Pimax made with the needed distorsion profiles of the 57ppd module:

In the past I was always complaining by the high internal SuperSampling needed for the distorsion profiles of the panel-Lense geometry of the Pimax Crystal (Original and Light) and Pimax Crystal Super 50ppd. The ratio rendered/physicalpanel was about 2.66, meaning you need to render 2.66 times the pixels of the panel, which is the case of the Super 50ppd require the enormous amount of 78 million pixels (6240x6280), and at 90Hz this is no reachable even by the best 5090.

With a 5090 in IL-2 for the Super 50ppd, to reach 90fps the resolution has to be reduced to 56 million pixels (0.85 custom res.)

But now, with this new 57ppd module of the Super they have reduced the FOV and it looks they need much less internal supersampling (ratio 1.34!! which is very good!) requiring "only" 39 million pixels (4348x4556) to be rendered, which is just half of the needed pixels of the 50ppd module.

And the amazing thing is that he shows it provides a better quality images.

It means that now a 5090 card is plenty of power even to add some extra supersampling, and a 5080/4090 card at full power will also be able to render those 39 million pixels at 90fps.

This is a very nice move of Pimax, but has a cost (less FOV). No more wasting GPU power to render an absurd amount of pixels.

Now they only need to reduce the size of the Super to the form factor of the BSB2... 😉

Let´s see what they do with the Pimax Air Dream in terms of that ratio and the FOV.

In a couple of months they'll announce the increased FOV version. :)

If they do, I'll probably get that as just the optical engine.

It's nice an' all but I wouldn't trade FOV for more pixels, at 0.85 the image quality is already pretty stellar. :)

The problem I have with wider FOV is it's wasted performance on what, white light in your peripheral?  The 57PPD has the same viewing area as the Varjo Aero and if I look to one side of the lenses, only the nearest eye can see the edge because the other is looking into the black void between the two lenses or the side of my nose, which means the eye looking at the edge is no longer in the sweet spot or seeing in 3D; a total waste of performance IMO.  At that point it's very natural to just want to turn your head to keep both eyes on the target, and when you're looking for tiny dots as you generally do in air combat, having those smaller pixels means the planes will start taking shape further away with less blur.  NobiWan's XRNeckSafer keeps your head in the game so well that you don't need to look outside of the sweet spot, plus everything stays in 3D at 1.00 default setting giving you 100% of the headset's worth you paid for.

Just do yourself a favor before you buy the wider FOV and count how many times in the day you find yourself looking at the side of your nose before instinctively turning your head.  <G>

I am just waiting for the day when someone on this site posts that they can identify an aircraft type at the same distance as on a monitor.  When that happens, I will gladly upgrade my headset immediately.

I have a 48' oled monitor that runs at 120 FPS and I can ID better in either the Aero or Cristal Light myself, the 3D helps, but I'm considering the Super 57PPD now too for the extra detail at distance.

Well, I guess the 57PPD won't be generally available until mid 2027 at the earliest (given Pimax's standard performance in such matters), by which time there will be more new offerings from other brands, so meh anyway.

They give three options though which is nice.  If a person also races then the 50ppd would be the perfect compromise because seeing cars coming up along side or timing the braking points etc. is more important then IDing a few pixels.  If all a guy did was race and play FPS then probably the ultra wide makes more sense.
