So, realistically, what are we looking at for ground column numbers?

I am part of an online war that currently uses IL2 1946 w/HSFX 6.0.  We can easily get about 100 moving vehicles in the game at any point in time, and sometimes many more.

In order for this game to be a viable option for us, we would need to know how many ground units can be active.

I'm not too terribly familiar with how ROF handles it's ground units, only by what people have told me.  I keep hearing that ROF can only handle about 20 ground units on the map at any point in time, which is pretty low.

Do we have any idea how many ground units this sim will be able to handle at any point in time?  Anything less that 100 would be very disappointing, imho, and preferably, with how advanced computers have become, I'd like to see upwards of 200 to 300 units available for use.

Thanks.

remember that the detail of the 3d models has also increased - so where IL2 46 has low poly models - the newer sim has much more detail in this regard. due to customer requests

So - having 100's of IL2 original ground units in NEW IL2 might be possible - it might not necessarily be welcome

I think its too early to tell.

If I had access to the servers like at my last job, I'd find out that out real fast upon release (and the hosting instructions are out). Its funny tossing more objects and watching the gpu spike, then the cpu, and the RAM . . .

CLOD's design had less than satisfactory hardware resources allocation . . .

But I don't have access to servers anymore.

Well on to the discussion.

Maybe the question asked, is would you and your friends be willing to sit out of the BOS experience until the second / third  etc release if the initial can't get the 100 individual ground units in a map?

Personally I'd go with Heywooood, the 100 thing can be done (given how large BOS maps are, gives alot of room and there are software / rendering tricks) but will it be at a reasonable cost (of hardware resources, software coding, time to develop etc) for the first release?  The devs (based off their discussions with us) have a good grasp of scope creep and I wouldn't be surprised if large scale ground movements are on the future To Do list.

I believe the guys that went to the 1CGS media event said that there was a demo mission with between 50-60 units.

It's in one of the threads if you search for it.

I just created and tested a mission in RoF with a 25 vs 25 tank battle and 4x4 aircraft dogfight overhead. So far no problems! WIll try to find the limit, which will give us an idea of what we can expect in BoS.

I am no expert, but lets entertain the thought of having a mechanized recon company, a medium tank company and a mechanized infantry company on the field for the Germans, which I guess is not totally unreasonable.

If they were fully stocked, which they never really were, that would total at:

Mechanized recon company

  • 2 motorcycles
  • 24 armored cars
  • 11 cars and trucks

Medium tank company

  • 7 motorcycles
  • 19 tanks
  • 12 cars and trucks

Mechanized infantry company

  • 4 motorcycles
  • 22 armored halftracks
  • 9 cars and trucks

= 110 vehicles

That number then has to be doubled, cause it is unlikely for me to be fighting thin air.

You also have to keep in mind that that is a far cry from a convoy attack. A single horse drawn column was comprised of 46 carts and truck based columns were usually made up of around 25 trucks each.

Looki g forward to the results. Though not bos. Its still Interesti g to have a base line!

We'll have a better idea after the Cologne show...probably

You will find a limit pretty soon if you want to make some hisotrical or "serious" mission. And that will not give you an idea how it will be in BOS as it is already stated this would be improved in BOS engine (I call it ROF2 engine)....

I like that - RoF2 - it better resolves the I-16 in the RoF hangar since day one...very apt for BoS since CloD was the actual attempt at IL2 ermmm2  (or NEW IL2)
