MIG Question, regarding FLAP functionality.

I rarely fly the Mig, but I notice that no matter what speed I'm at the flaps don't come down.   I've tried everything.   It says the flap mechanism is active and you hear a hydraulic sound, but they don't go down.   Once on the ground, they deploy.   Is there something special about a Mig's flaps?

In the specifications something is mentioned (see below), but the behaviour is a bit strange.

I can deploy them during flight at ca. 220km/h, but sometimes they deploy more and sometimes less.

And I currently not able to retract them full.

It seems to be something very special...

"- Landing flaps have a limiter for the maximum angle. The flaps have an extended range from 0° to 50°. The landing flaps have pneumatic actuator. Flaps can only be instantly extended to the angle which is set by limiter, gradual extending is impossible. Due to weak force of the actuator the extended landing flaps may retract upward by the airflow when the airspeed is more than 220 km/h. For this reason, it is necessary to remember that flaps will not extend fully in case of high speed. In case of a high-speed landing approach the flaps may extend a few steps right before landing."

Ya, the limiter.  I forgot that's what it's called.   I know there are some kind of limiters on other flap controls, on other airplanes, but for the life of me, I don't understand the  functionality of the flaps on the Mig.

The MiG-3 flaps are pneumatic, activated by air pressure like the Spitfire and Yak.  Unlike those two aircraft which have only Up or Down positions, the MiG can stop the flaps at different angles depending on where the flap limiter is set.  Since the flaps are activated by air pressure, stronger external air pressure from the slip stream (At higher air speeds) can force them back up.

Unfortunately, the last modification to the MiG flaps in this sim screwed up their function so they are not realistic.  There should be two controls.  One, the flap limiter control which sets the flap limiter position, and Two the flaps control which raises and lowers the flaps (To the extent set by the limiter).  The flaps should instantaneously go up or down.  You shouldn't have to hold the one control we have to raise or lower the flaps, only the limiter is activated that way.

So, I have the flaps for all aircraft set to my flap slide switch on my Warthog Joystick.   This only activates the limiter?   Do I have to keymap something else to get the flaps to extend?

No, only one key still does both limiter and flaps.  It was always on one key in this sim, but previously holding the flap key down continously lowered the limiter, but not the flaps.  Later a quick bump of the same key lowered the flaps to the limiter's position.  So the limiter could be pre-set to a position and the flaps were quick to deploy to that position, and quick to raise.  Handy in combat.

Now you hold the key down and the limiter lowers and when you release the key the flaps go down.  And when you hold the flaps-up key the flaps instantly raise and the limiter slowly starts up.  But if you release the key before the limiter is all the way up, the flaps re-deploy to the limiter's position again.

In real life you could move the limiter up and down without deploying the flaps.  They were on separate controls.  Watch the left side of the cockpit when you lower the flaps.  You'll see the limiter wheel moving and then the flaps lever above it moves when you release the key on your controller.

Great! Thanks for the explanation.  I appreciate it.
