89- Posted August 7 Posted August 7 (edited) After a prolonged break from RoF, it suddenly dawned on me how to reliably and safely defeat the pesky two seaters. No upward facing guns, although with them on this tactic works even better. Should work against humans too, although timing would be different and less predictable. Here is a video with me taking down 8 Ace AI Re8s one after another in my standard Albatros D3 and getting barely a scratch : Basically, the strategy came from a real life WW1 guide, I simply did not know how to apply it to RoF - until today 😄 : In RoF, the AI is doing a defensive weave, trying to setup the reargunner with a look-down-shoot-down situation. Our strategy is: 1) Approach the two seater from behind and below, flying level and at a good distance. Too far - and it will be hard to aim, too close - and slight error in timing will lead to catastrophic results. 2) TIME the pull up to when the two seater is about to turn away from you and attack into that raised side. We have a few seconds - which is plenty to put a longish burst into it. 3) Hard pull towards either side and escape as it tilts that side back towards us. 4) Rinse and repeat I find this strat to be much more efficient than high speed slashing attacks that pass close to the gunner - less risk and quicker to set up the attack, plus it does not require speed merchants like SeVa or Spad. Here are a couple of practice missions: one for the SeVa, and another for the Albatros D3 vs a pair of Ace AI two seaters, feel free to change the planes as you see fit in the RoF Editor. (Of course, in the default Quick Mission two seaters behave like big cannon fodder fighters, as opposed to acting like themselves.) So yes, it works even against gunners with sniper rifles and antigrav suits 1
