Hi all, I'm after some feedback on how Twin engined aircraft consume fuel compared to single engine aircraft.

When playing multi player, I adjust my fuel quantity to suit the mission.

Say I've decided 300L is enough to safely complete the mission in a single engine aircraft, then I would take 600L in a twin engined aircraft. I have always done it this way, but it occurred to me recently, that having 2 engines might make the aircraft more efficient as it has more thrust - even though a twin engine usually has more mass and a bigger area, meaning more drag.

Obviously, fuel consumption depends a lot on how you fly the aircraft. So, let's assume im talking about cruise settings at 10,000ft on a lovely clear day with no wind 😁

Interested to hear what you guys think, and how you manage twin engined fuel qunatities

If you check this topic with flight performances, you can check (for example) Bf 109 G-2/G-4 and Bf 110 G-2. Both have DB-605 engines, both have flight endurance and overall fuel capacity listed.

For the 109 it's 400l letting it cruise for 2,4h at 3000m and 350 kmph IAS.

For the 110 it's 1270l, but the flight time is 4 hours at 3000m and 300 kmph IAS.

The comparison of these cases gives a fuel per engine coefficient of 1,5 in 110s favour, while the difference in endurance is 1,66. Close enough if you ask me. So yeah, double the volume for double the engines.

I think if two aircraft have similar engines, their fuel usage will be similar given a similar manifold pressure and rpm setting.  So, the aircraft with two engines will use about twice the fuel.  Twin engine aircraft tend to be more draggy tho so the actual range on similar fuel per engine might not be the same, but the endurance will be the same.
