From high above, Captain Wind and his Wing13 wingman, Zetas, soared through the skies in their P-48s, tireless hunters of steel and smoke. Their squadron knew them as the "Yankee Vampires," not for their fear of light, but for how deadly they were when the day revealed their prey. "Visual tango!" Zetas shouted over the radio. Below them, a column of armored tanks. The 7th Panzer Division (German: 7. Panzer-Division) was an armored unit of the Heer in World War II. It participated in the Battle of France, Operation Barbarossa (invasion of the Soviet Union), and the occupation of Vichy (France), and it fought on the Eastern Front until the end of the war. The 7th Panzer Division, nicknamed and popularly known as the "Ghost Division" for its speed and independent movement, made it difficult for the enemy and the German High Command to determine its true location on the battlefront. The Germans moved between leafless trees, relying on shade for concealment. A grave error. Wind turned his aircraft in a sky-splitting motion. His rockets and machine guns spat fire and metal. One by one, the tanks exploded like bonfires in the sun. But not everything was so simple: from the east, a Bf-109 emerged like a dark falcon. Zetas saw it first. He dived like a missile toward the enemy fighter. What followed was a deadly dance between two machines and two men who could not miss. The sun, high and cruel, made each turn reflect a lethal glare. Finally, Zeta's Republic P-47 Thunderbolt tailed the German and fired a burst that brought him down. "Another vampire hunter," Wind muttered with a smile. "The light makes us ruthless," Zetas replied, as the sky became theirs again. Wind, with a signal already familiar to the two Rotten crew members in formation, turned in formation and headed back to their base to have a few beers and a laugh, recounting everything.
