Wind and Zetas, two Luftwaffe pilots with nerves of steel and wings lent by fate, were adjusting the harnesses of their Bf-109 G2 "Gustabs." They were heavy, sturdy fighters, but lacking in agility compared to the new monsters crossing the sky: the B-29 Superfortresses and their P-51D escorts. "They're not airplanes, they're flying castles," Zetas murmured, peering through the canopy. Wind barely turned his head. "Then let's lay siege to them." The radars had marked a route: a formation of B-29s, escorted but scattered. The opportunity was slim. They took off roaring, their Daimler-Benz engines vibrating like chained lions. They climbed slowly, almost as if the air itself was holding them back. But their hearts flew faster than any jet. At high altitude, between clouds like torn banners, they saw them. Shining giants, crossing Europe with their cargo holds full of doom. Wind attacked first, in a violent dive, like a medieval lance. His Bf-109 screamed, twisting against its weight, but the bullets slammed into the fuselage of a B-29, drawing fire and surprise. Zetas came behind, zooming like a heavy-winged falcon. His artillery shell bit a rear turret. The bomber faltered, but kept flying. “It’s like hitting mountains with paper fists!” shouted Zetas. “Then strike with rage,” replied Wind, turning for another attack. One of the Bf-109s was damaged, its wing bitten by defensive fire. Zetas nearly lost control. But against all odds, they managed to pull away, leaving smoke and legend behind. That night, the mechanics told the story as if it were epic: two heavy Bf-109s that dared to face the titans of the sky. TO BE CONTINUED... Edited July 29 by 1/JSpan_Wind75
