Aircraft modifications (Il-2 Korea)

Hi everyone!

I have a quick question about the upcoming game.

Will the aircraft modifications system, which was introduced in Rise of Flight and continued in Great Battles, be included in the Korea title as well?

Even though there were fewer aircraft types in the skies during the Korean War, some of them used different types of equipment for a given model.

If we take the Corsair as an example, here is what could be done to fully cover the type:

First of all, the Dash 4 came in two different models: the "basic" F4U-4 with its six .50 caliber machine guns and the F4U-4B with four 20 mm cannons.

Examples of armament variations in both Rise of Flight and Great Battles are plentiful. Can we hope for the same in Korea?

Furthermore, three types of canopies were fitted to the Corsair. The change occurred around the middle of the production run, so both models were encountered during the war. The third one is the model installed on the F4U-5 and is very rare on the Dash 4, so it's probably not worth including.

Here are the two "main" canopies illustrated:

Is it possible to hope to see such aircraft modifications in the game ?

Will we be able to customise our ammunition belts and harmonise each gun individually?

That's a question best suited to ask in a Dev Brief video. 🙂

A more important question, IMHO, is will we finally get API and APIT ammo for the M2 Browning?

I believe that is the plan, but I'll let those higher up the food chain give a definitive yes/no answer.

Hey Luke! I don't think you need to wait. One of the earlier Briefing videos outlined how they are working on three different types of incendiary ammunition. Of course, development plans can change - but insofar as anything has been announced, I believe it has been announced. So, I'd encourage BlitzPig_EL to put the playlist on in the background one day.

P.S. On a more sombre note: Most of the 0.50 cals will be M3 (with 150% of the rate of fire) and will probably be using M23 ammunition (which has a much larger explosive filler), so the effectiveness of the guns should be closer to twice what they would have been in WWII. Of course, the lack of self-sealing fuel tanks and light construction of Japanese aircraft means that they'll still be pretty effective - but if we ever return to the P-51 in 1944 against the Fw-190A8 the weapons won't be as effective as people will expect based on their performance in Korea or the Pacific. That said, the inclusion of incendiary effects would still make them somewhat more effective - just not as revolutionarily so.
