Hi everyone, I'm a veteran IL-2 1946 player, but I'm new to the world of VR.
I've always used my trusty old TrackIR 4, but I recently got myself a Quest 3s.
Playing Flight Simulator and X-Plane 12 with it has been amazing and immersive, but I'm 43 years old and over 220 pounds, so checking six in IL-2 has become almost impossible for me.
I've heard about Neck Safer, but I haven't been able to configure it properly.
So now I'm trying to combine head tracking from TrackIR 4 with the immersion of VR.

I'm feeling like an alien (lol).

So far, what I've managed to do is launch the game in VR in 2D mode and use head tracking with the TrackIR 4.
But when I switch to full 3D VR, it only tracks head movement from the Quest 3s.
Has anyone been able to use TrackIR head movement together with VR immersion?

My best regards!

You are attempting something unholy that makes no sense at all.

Are you running the game with Opencomposite?

If so, XRNecksaver should work. You can set it up something like this:

Then when entering the game, the first thing to do is to hit the centering button, and after that the left and right buttons work to rotate your head 60 degrees. Then you hold the left and right button while you can turn your head like normal (but with that 60 degree offset).

Hi Aapje

Well, I tried doing what you suggested, but I couldn’t get it to work.
Let me explain my whole situation.

I have an i7 8700K running at 5GHz, 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 3070.
I used to play with my old TrackIR 4 without major issues.
Then I decided to try VR with an Oculus, but since the currency here in Brazil is very devalued, I chose the Quest 3s because it’s more affordable.

So, I installed the Meta Quest Link software and bought a proper cable for the headset.
I set up the headset in Link mode, then I launch SteamVR, and after that I start IL-2.

But as I mentioned earlier, my head movements became very limited.
So I started looking for more information and discovered VR Neck Safer. It worked, but only when pressing the left/right buttons — and I don’t want that.

What I’d really like is for every degree I move my head, the in-game view would move at least twice as much, just like it does with my TrackIR.
From what I’ve seen, the tool you mentioned should do that, but it’s not working on my end.

I tried the same steps I used with VR Neck Safer, but it didn’t work.
Honestly, I don’t even know what "OpenComposite" is, which you mentioned.

I run a YouTube channel under my own name, and if you could help me out, I’d be glad to support the Brazilian community by sharing the solution.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Pablo, you need to set a centering button regardless, preferably the same one in the sim's controls that re-centers your VR. In IL2 that comes to life once you're in the game's menu, won't work before then.

You might sometimes also need to recentre your head with the headset's centering process (I don't know what that is with the Meta). That's only ever a one-time thing in any given session.

For auto-rotation in NeckSafer, you need to select that radio-button at the bottom, "Autorotation", choose "Smooth". That opens up extra settings that you can play with.

Be aware that auto-rotation in NeckSafer is very commonly where you HAVE to make sure your headset has been centered correctly.

Then, go into the game and hit your GAME/NeckSafer centering button. You can do that in the cockpit too, as often as you like. With Auto-rotation on you should find that when you turn your head it'll start at a 1:1 ratio but depending on the settings you've made it'll then amplify the ratio. Copy mine in the attached image and see how you go.

If nothing still works, send suckerburg a turd. Lol.

Something else that might cause an issue is the order in which the VR and NeckSafer APIs load. There is an app with which you can change the order, sometimes having the NeckSafer API below others can make it not work.

In that case you should use the autorotation option, like Panzerlang explained. And he is correct that you do need to set up a centering button in the Safer app that is the exact same button that you set up for the 'reset default VR' keybinding in IL-2.

However, XRNecksafer is not going to work unless you migrate over to OpenXR. You have the choice to either do that and then use the settings that Panzerlang showed you, or to stick with SteamVR, and then only VRNeckSafer will work. I would suggest migrating over, because XRNecksafer has a better interface.

To migrate to OpenXR, you need to replace the OpenVR dll in the game directory ('bin/game'). Use the one that this person shared, because newer versions don't work:

I'm very thankful to you all for the help.
I'll try to set it up here.
Do you know if OpenComposite works with Meta Quest Link?

It does. OpenXR is a generic standard that works with both Meta Quest Link and with Steam VR.
