Been reading on the forums and elsewhere and still unable to find a solution. Eventually, I ran out of potential fixes so I am reaching out. Thanks for any help.

Problem: None of the joystick axes work in game (Great Battles) despite being recognized and assignable.  Both VKB joysticks are recognized in the game. I can successfully use button mapping which works in game. I can reassign the joystic axes (X, Y, Z) but when I select the input mapping section (where you can fine tune the deadzone, etc) there is no recognition/movement.

What I have tried:
Unplugged all usb devices other than the two joysticks, mouse and keyboard. Made sure in game the "joystick" box was checked. Deleted and recreated a fresh input profile in game. All devices were recognized but still nothing from the axes. Edited and/or removed the devices.txt file in the game data folder. The txt file did show both VKB sticks by default. Also disabled the Steam generic controller input for the game. (both those fixes were suggested here or elswhere.)

Ran the windows calibration wizard as well as the VKB test app. Both sticks are showing as fully functional. Also tested in MSFS with no issues.

I'm probably missing something but would appreciate any insight

The input mapping does not always show movement right away.

1) After mapping the axes get out of the key mapping section.

2)Try a quick mission or something where you are in the plane, see if the stick moves.

3)Then go back to key mapping and input mapping and the axes should show.

This is how my VKB stick works. FYI step 2 may not be required all the time.

Good Luck

I've had this a time or two with my GFIII and it seems to me that I exited the game, restarted my rig and then went back in IL2 and I was good to go.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to reboot to check and I discovered that it had now detected my throttle stick as the flight controller and the axes were now working but I just needed to clear everything out and get the correct assignments mapped out. Either the restarts that you suggested or something that I had previously did fixed it. Was just hidden as it initially completely ignored the second stick. Whatever, works now. Hopefully my list of fixes helps others.

Plugging and unplugging controllers frequently changes the controller number assigned by the sim in devices.txt.  When a controller is recognized but not functioning you should check the joystick number in Settings and compare that to the number assigned in devices.txt.
