Hey everyone! In today's blog post, we're excited to share a new feature coming to Korea. IL2 Series: the museum. You can read all about it here and see all the images in 4K detail: https://il2-korea.com/news/dd_35

Outstanding news.  This will be helpful not only to new players, but to those of us wanting more historic info.

Yes, this was something that I liked about the Jane's World War II Fighters interface.

As soon as you enter the game, you will find yourself in the museum. With just 3−4 clicks,

OK, now your scaring the crap out of me, hope this isn't a mandatory path because this sort of channeling stuff drives me nuts.

You know what would help new players? Being able to click all those controls so meticulously described in the museum, instead of fussing about with a gamey radial menu. More complexity is welcome, but it should be done in an immersive way, especially if the systems behind it do exist.

You know, I'm something of a museum owner myself.

It's optional, and we already have other optional HUD things like technochat or icons. I think it would be good for players who don't have access to lots of physical buttons, especially in VR.

I remember starting out when I didn't know what all the planes were, and what their differing performances were like, something like this would have really helped me get through the learning curve quicker. Same with learning all the systems, and learning to read all the gauges. This will be very good for getting people into manual engine management.

In the top right of all the images you can see icons for looks like chat, messages, friends list and Twitter? That's interesting, and should help the online experience.

Is it possible to link specific submenu's to buttons? For example, it may be nice to have one button to open/close the AI commands submenu*, and then have a separate 3 way dedicated to up/down/click. And then you can dedicate another button to another submenu, but use the same 3 way to navigate that menu.

Also, is it possible to customize the radial menu(s)? It would be very nice to only have the commands that you want.

* If AI commands actually work in the new engine

It's not optional if you can't bind everything to a physical control. This could, perhaps, be solved by an innovative feature: ability to click switches inside the cockpit with your mouse.

I know, wild idea, but adding this wouldn't turn the Il-2 into DCS (or CloD).

There's people using the keyboard if they don't have enough HOTAS buttons, that's who I was thinking might enjoy this as an option. They've said before clicky pits just take too many resources to implement. They'd be nice if they were easy to implement, but I can think of 1000 things I'd rather have than clicky pits.

We aren't modeling clickable cockpits, sorry. That decision was made long ago.

This is really an exceptional idea! It should help new players understand their aircraft and also generate long-term interest.

My one suggestion: Also have a 'historical accounts' section that includes after action reports, anecdotes or stories. I wonder if we could help research this?

I did find it pretty slow (i.e. pre-rendered transitions). Hopefully this new one will be easy to use.

I just hope that it won't be an overly complex click fest.  I want a really good combat flight sim, with great flight and damage modeling, and believable AI, immersive atmospherics and game play   I don't want a complex cockpit procedure simulator.

You'll probably be able to press E to autostart, just like in BoX. Once in flight, the procedures tend to be reasonably simple. In fact, you should have more control over your aircraft than before, with the ability to control the fuel system and such (when those things even exist in BoX, they're often hidden behind dumbed down "automation" to avoid adding bindings).

For the aircraft statistics, can we please have Vx and Vy added to the stats cards? Those are something I often find myself wishing I knew in Great Battles, especially with the jets.

For what it's worth, I hope that regardless of clickable cockpis, the controls that are implemented will correspond 1:1 with actual, historical way those switches and knobs worked, and not be shoehorned into a unified control system, particularly for radar sets. We probably won't have per-aircraft bindings (despite the obvious usefulness of that idea, for clarity if nothing else), but I'd prefer to be able to bind my physical controls to actually reflect how the aircraft worked.

I'm not sure what the issue is here. We already have per-aircraft bindings available for anyone who wants to take advantage of that in GB, so it's going to be in Korea as well. That, and those controls do work right now in the actual historical way they work.

Let's try to stay on-topic! We are supposed to be discussing Il-2: Korea, and in particular the museum feature.

After reading this I’m afraid 1C is burning lots of budget/labor for minor game aspects.
But now I guess when labor and budget is no problem and making it from scratch, why not include the PWCG GUI into this new game. Just like Ankors PWCG-GUI in ROF?

The museum is relatively easy to do for them, since they already produce 3D-models of the planes, so it's mostly a matter of placing the already created 3D-objects in a separate space (note that they already do this in GB anyway, since you get to see the 3D-model of the last plane you flew in the start screen). Creating the 3D-models is way, way, way harder than merely showing it off elsewhere, even if they add a bit of extra information and such.

I also think that this has the additional benefit of allowing the modelers and 1CGS in general to show off the full-quality model, since the in-game model is optimized/simplified for performance, but this is far less of an issue in the museum when you have merely one plane being shown, and you don't have all the simulations running for flying/damage/tactics/strategy/etc. So I think that the benefits go beyond what we experience, and also improve 1CGS morale, and has benefits when it comes to showing off and thus selling the game.

As for integrating PWCG, my hope is that they will take inspiration from PWCG to make the in-game campaign a lot more dynamic, preferably going beyond what is possible with an external tool. If I were them, I would hire Pat as a consultant, but of course I am not them. Ultimately, we have to see whether they improve the career mode, or whether PWCG would still offer significant benefits.

This is definitely something I wanted in GB and Im glad it's being added here.

Excellent job!

Thats a great idea! All the info in an official source for the game.
Just like Squadron descriptions on career.

Great idea!
